CURRICULUM

STRATEGY | 23 - 25 Jul
A successful leader is able to identify, create and secure long-term competitive advantages.
In this module, explore competitive strategy, and how your organisation whether big or small
can build multi-sided platform advantages like Airbnb and Uber, and address strategic
challenges while learning from leading digital companies and emerging unicorns. You would
then use the business model canvas as a strategic management tool to consider other business
model innovations and understand the principles that underlie robust models.

MARKETING | 27 - 29 Aug
This module helps you translate strategic direction into profit-driven, competitive marketing
strategies, tactics and communication. You will cover marketing value system, draw on case
discussions with a focus on emerging markets and innovative companies, and evaluate your
organisation’s positioning.

FINANCE | 24 - 26 Sep
Good leaders must understand numbers to guide strategy and grow their business. This module
equips you with the foundation to do so regardless of your experience and training. Wearing the
hat of a CEO, you will analyse the impact of strategic decisions on finance, evaluate financing
options, recommend actions to create shareholder value, spot potential financial problems,
value projects and companies, and turn around an underperforming business.

FIELD TRIP | 29 Oct
Visit digital companies. Date may change to accommodate visits.

INNOVATION | 30 Oct
You will learn how you can drive innovation within your organisation by assessing capabilities,
readiness and priorities while building a culture of co-creation. Complementing this are
discussions on innovation strategies of leading companies.

LEADERSHIP | 31 Oct - 1 Nov
The goal is to help you understand what it takes to transition from a functional head to senior
leader. It starts with understanding your preferred leadership and communication styles by
completing a DISC+ profile assessment, and by exploring the skills, habits and values of a
top leader, and understanding where you may need to close the gap. Building on this, you will
learn about influencing without authority and having impactful, persuasive conversations with
stakeholders.
The module ends with “GMP In Action: BFM 89.9”, insights from the founder of BFM Media
on building a startup to profitability in a highly competitive industry. Known for its engaging
interviews, BFM 89.9 the business radio station has featured local and international leaders and
practises an egalitarian culture with the purpose of “building first-world Malaysians”.

CURRICULUM

STRATEGY & INNOVATION | 13-15 Aug
As business landscape changes, it is
critical for managers to understand the
language of innovation to stay ahead of
competition. We start off with connecting
strategy and innovation, and applying the
tools of design thinking used by companies
such as GE, Apple, Nike and Alessi. Design
thinking allows you to identify the “job-to-
be-done” for customers, to co-create and
boost customers’ touch-points and service
journeys, and develop new competitive
value. To apply what you have learned, you
will ideate and prototype new products/
services for a real business.

LEADERSHIP | 16-17 Aug
Based on global best practices of leading
digital companies such as Google, you will
learn how to build high performing teams
through understanding values, inculcating
growth mindset, coaching and giving
feedback, dealing with underperformers,
and managing conflict, energy and time.
The module ends with insights from the
founder of BFM Media on building a startup
to profitability in a highly competitive

featured local and international leaders and
practises an egalitarian culture with the

facilitators are also helpful in delivering what you need.”
Wan Juliana Aigawati Wan Mat, Head of Compliance,

“The ELP has been really enjoyable. Some of the things
I’ve picked up from the programme is an alternative way to
think about how to do my work. Design thinking was very
applicational with structured processes to solve problems
and to retract backwards and be able to put our creative
juices into practice. Leadership was very insightful in
recognising who I am, how I interact, and what impression
I give to colleagues, bosses and clients.”
Rachel Ng, AVP Legal, Khazanah Nasional (2017)

“I like the practical focus, examples, and engaging
speakers with good experiences to share. The modules
are well focused on new managers. I learned about

AI &
                   BIG DATA
The advent of technology powered by analytics, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) will
reshape trade and economies. With labour-saving technologies, developed countries may
depend less on low cost labour thereby causing a slowdown in foreign direct investment growth,
technology transfer and rate of job creation in uncompetitive emerging markets. Malaysian
companies face the risk of being unplugged from global value chains (GVCs) and losing their
edge to more efficient players unless they step up.

Professionals also need to keep abreast with digital transformation to ensure they are not left
behind. Already 54% of jobs including skilled ones in Malaysia could be at high risk of being
displaced by technology over the next 20 years, Khazanah Research Institute estimates.

Our programmes aim at helping professionals use data, develop AI capabilities and lead digital
transformation within their organisations. Taking a strategic view, you will learn big data/ AI use
cases and implementation strategies, and how to:
■■ develop and test hypothesis, and predict outcomes
■■ make a case for investing in AI and big data capabilities
■■ evaluate, set up the infrastructure, and hire the right teams

Join our programmes and future proof your career:
■■ Artificial Intelligence Jumpstarter *
■■ Data Science Jumpstarter *
■■ A.I. For Good Hackathon
■■ MY.AI events
■■ Digital Transformation (customised)

* Prior programming skills not required.

“Just as electricity transformed almost everything 100 years ago,
today I actually have a hard time thinking of an industry that I don’t
think AI will transform in the next several years.” Andrew Ng,
co-founder of Google Brain and Coursera, and former chief scientist
      at Baidu Research

                                                                                           11
LEADERSHIP
COMMUNICATION
Outward Mindset For High Performance
Pioneered by Arbinger Institute US, this programme moves participants from inward mindset to
outward mindset. The former focuses on personal goals and objectives without considering the
impact of behavior. This mindset is therefore prone to negativity, self-justification and blaming
others. Most people stuck in this mindset may still feel they are doing good work and making
real contribution, and yet be frustrating the organisation.
When individuals and organisations transition to outward mindset, they are focused on big
objectives and results. The outward mindset promotes an authentically proactive, open and
collaborative culture. Behaviour, communication styles and actions change when mindsets
change.

Media, Presentation and Crisis Communication
The most important skill leaders have is to be able to persuade when communicating with
clients, colleagues, and the media. Learn from a former international television presenter on
how to develop executive presence. Speak confidently at a conference, in front of the camera,
and off the cuff. Acquire skills to handle difficult questions from aggressive journalists especially
during a crisis. Training is conducted at a professionally set-up studio.

Communication For Technical Professionals
Speaking articulately and engaging your audience can be challenging if your subject is
