Look forward to more activities coming up in the summer! Governor Town Hall Governor Pete Ricketts had a town hall meeting in the library on April 27. He provided a summary of recent legislation which featured “historic” tax cuts, plans to create a 3,000 acre lake between Omaha and Lincoln, solar energy, and a ceremonial signing of LB-310 with the bill’s sponsor, District 2 State Senator Rob Clements of Elmwood. LB-310 reduces the rate of tax on inheritances.

Page 5 Between the Pages May 2022 Benton Kinkead Part 4 The Last Chapter By Harlan Seyfer Historian, Historic Downtown Plattsmouth Association Benton Kinkead was born in Ohio, fought in the Civil War, raised his family in Pla-smouth, and died in Sea-le, Washington. The la-er is where the last account of his story takes place. On Friday 10 November 1916, Benton’s funeral was held in the crematory of Mount Pleasant Cemetery in the Queen Anne area of Sea-le. Services were conducted by the Crema7on Society of Washington. There the story would have ended, if not for a group of veterans one hundred years later. The Crematorium Twelve years before Benton’s death, the Washington Crema7on Associa7on, a4er selling a sufficient number of shares to its members, constructed the Mount Pleasant Crematorium. Adjoining its crematorium, the associa7on also built a columbarium, a crypt with niches to hold urns with ashes. Not all of the Associa7on’s shareholders remained happy. In 1908, Clara Cave, whose husband had been cremated, sued the associa7on, asser7ng “the agreed price [for two niches and urns] was $140 and that she paid $100 on deposit, and that when later she tendered the remaining $40 the officers of the associa7on refused to receive the money or to permit her to use the niches and urns,” forcing her “to remove her husband’s ashes from the columbarium.” Clara claimed she “lost the $100 paid the Washington Crema7on Associa7on [and] that she had to expend $200 for other niches and urns.” The case may not have come to trial, for no further men7on could be found in Sea-le papers, which only reported her side of the story. Clara does not seem to have been soured on crema7on, though. When she eventually died in 1957, her ashes were interred next to her husband’s in Mount Pleasant Cemetery adjoining the associa7on’s crematorium. That same year, the office of the Washington A-orney General ruled that, unlike cemetery associa7ons, crematory associa7ons were not tax exempt, specifically naming the Washington Crema7on Associa7on, the only crematory in the state at the 7me. Perhaps these troubles mo7vated the associa7on to transform itself from a membership organiza7on into a publicly held stock company, renaming itself the Crema7on Society of Washington, with stock trading at $11.25 a share in 1909. Benton’s Ashes As men7oned previously, no reason is given why Benton was cremated, nor explana7on why his ashes were abandoned. However, reading between the lines, the following might be what happened. Before his death, Benton was living with his daughters E-a and Laura. When he passed away, E-a provided the informa7on for his death cer7ficate (see “Benton Kinkead’s Story, Part 3, Sea-le, Death Arthur A. Wright & Son Mortuary Today – Note Name Over Entrance and Life,” Between the Pages [Pla-smouth — Courtesy Bu-erworth Funeral Home - Arthur A Wright Chapel & Queen Anne Columbarium Library newsle-er], Con7nued on page 6.
Page 6 Between the Pages May 2022 Con7nued from page 5. March 2022). Under sec7on 17 for a-ending physician, the death cer7ficate is blank, but gives as the cause of death “Lobar pneumonia – Chris7an scien7st.” Chris7an Science rejected physical existence and maintained that sickness is due to incorrect belief. In prac7ce then, Chris7an Scien7sts spurned the germ theory of disease with, in Benton’s case, disastrous consequences. Once he contracted pneumonia, Benton did not seek medical a-en7on. Furthermore, an obs7nate old man, he le4 no instruc7ons for his death. To say the least, this strained rela7ons between himself and his offspring. Meanwhile, the Crema7on Society of Washington was adver7sing the disposal of remains at “less than one-third of the amount asked by undertakers.” The Society offered to ship the ashes at similar, but addi7onal cost. To E-a, this was a-rac7ve. As the Benton’s executor, she chose the op7on of least outlay, but not buying into shipping. Her father’s ashes went into storage and, as the years passed, no second thoughts were given the ma-er; although, in the late 1940s, E-a returned to Pla-smouth on an extended visit to old friends. Ashes Meanwhile, the Crema7on Society of Washington thrived under the supervision of Arthur A. Wright, its founder and majority stakeholder. Benton’s ashes remained in the columbarium underneath Wright’s house. In the mid-1920s, Wright took his son Charles into the business, establishing Arthur A. Wright and Son Funeral Home adjacent to the crematory. Meanwhile, a compe7tor, E.R. Bu-erworth & Sons Funeral Directors, was rising to prominence in downtown Sea-le. (Bu-erworth is credited with coining the terms “mortuary” and “mor7cian.”) In 1967, the Bu-erworths purchased Wright and Son. Twenty-one years later (1998), the Bu-erworths sold their holdings to Steward Enterprises, a na7onal funeral chain. Today (2022), the funeral home and crematory con7nue as the Bu-erworth Funeral Home - Arthur A Wright Chapel. Crema7on Society of Washington Ad – No7ce Prices Fast forward to 2007 — Sea-le Daily Times, 1913-03-03, p. 3(6-7) That year, a group of re7red veterans founded the Missing In America Project (MIAP). As MIAP’s website (h-ps://www.miap.us/) explains, the project’s objec7ves are to “locate, iden7fy and inter the unclaimed cremated remains of American veterans.” In November 2020, the ashes of Benton Kinkead were rediscovered at the Bu-erworth Funeral Home. MIAP member Thomas Kea7ng noted "I had to transfer his cremains to a sturdier container. The original cardboard box he was in got damp during the years of storage. It was not sturdy enough to ship. The label on the top of the urn is from his original storage box from November, 1916." MIAP member Jim Lucia inves7gated and was surprised to discover that, according to Nebraska GAR records, Benton Kinkead was recorded as buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Pla-smouth. He contacted Jessie Clark, superintendent of Oakhill, who confirmed that Benton’s wife Cynthia alone was buried in the Pla-smouth cemetery. Jessie contacted Kermit Reisdorph and Mike Pauly at the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts in Pla-smouth, who immediately began taking steps to organize interment with full military honors. On Saturday, October 30, 2021, one-hundred-five years a4er his death, while a pair of bald eagles gracefully circled overhead, Benton and Cynthia Kinkead were reunited.
