(DEADLINE FOR MAY 2021 EDITION: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28TH)

VILLAGE OF DOAKTOWN - PUBLIC HEARING
The Village of Doaktown wishes to inform the public of its intention to consider an
amendment to By-Law # 2017-01, entitled “Village of Doaktown Rural Plan
                By-Law.”
The proposed amendments are intended to be minor in nature and do not include
overly substantive changes to land use requirements. Further, some of the
proposed amendments will facilitate development by mitigating constraints in the
current development approval process.
The public is invited to inspect the proposed By-Law # 2021-01 on our Village of Doaktown website
(www.discoverdoaktown.com) between the dates of Friday, April 9 until Thursday, April 29, 2021.
Written objections shall be submitted to the Acting Clerk by mail or by email, and will be accepted
by the undersigned until Thursday, April 29, 2021, at 5:00 pm, the day of the Hearing.
The Public Hearing will be held on Thursday April 29, 2021 at 7:30 pm at the Prospect Place Arena
(upstairs). Any person in attendance at the Hearing may speak for or against the written
objections.
Following the Public Hearing, the public has fourteen (14) days to respond in writing if they have
any objections in relation to objections raised at the Hearing. Written objections will be received
until Friday, May 14 at 5:00 pm.

On behalf of the family of the late CHARLES “ELWOOD” AMOS, our hearts are
full of gratitude when we say, “thank you.”
To all our family and friends for the prayers, visits, food, cards, flowers and
                            donations.
To the Miramichi Valley Chapel for your assistance and for opening your doors during this difficult time;
to Becky Schirato for your help at the funeral home and the heart-filled interpretation of the service. To
Maureen and Gregg for the beautiful song / music, and to the family members who spoke at the service.
To St. Thomas United Church and Rev. Brian Curtis for the blessing on Dad during the home visits and at
the service.
We wish to thank Dr. Chow for his home visits during Dad’s last days; and Extra Mural (especially Derek)
and our family members for all their help.
Elwood will be missed by so many in the family and community. Our hearts will mend in time but we

SALMON COUNTRY NEWS - The village of Doaktown
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of
the Village of Doaktown who have supported me in my role
as a Village Councillor over the past 13 years. It has been
an enjoyable experience and I have met some wonderful
people. However, it is now time for me to move on and to
serve my community in another capacity. To that end, I will
not be offering my name for consideration in the upcoming
                                    municipal election.
Thank you again for your support throughout my years on
Council, and please remember to vote on Monday, May 10.

                                                      just remembered. Then there’s Mother’s – and
Father’s – Day rapidly approaching, or maybe

                                                               Ice cream arriving soon !

COVID-19 does make things a little trickier but grad parties, small family
celebrations, and business meetings are still VERY do-able. Our reservation
schedule for the Spring and Summer is already filling up so why not call
Daphne at the Museum (365-7787) or at home (365-7994) for further
information.
And, if you’re looking for a more “rustic” atmosphere, why not consider the Doak Barn and its
grounds? Until staff are permanently at the site, you can phone the Salmon Museum (365-7787) for
more information and we’ll start the wheels in motion.

Congratulations to WILLIS JOHNSTON, our latest Chase the Ace consolation
prize winner, who was presented with a cheque worth $428 on April 8. We
think he was pleased! Our next draw will be held on Thursday evening, April
15 with a jackpot of approximately $14,000 and “only” 34 cards left in play.
On the Salmon Museum and Friends front, we had a non-player last week so on April 15 the jackpot
will start at $223.
Drop in on Wednesdays (10 am – 4 pm) or Thursdays (10 am – 8 pm) to pick up your ticket, or just
to say “hi” (that works too!).

Our Spring / Summer hours will begin on Sunday, May 16 and although our collection will
be off-limits until May 23, our Gift Shop will be fully staffed from Monday – Saturday
(9:00 am – 5:00 pm) and on Sundays from Noon until 5 pm.

The Doak Provincial Heritage Site is busily preparing for its 2021

                                 (and ways to achieve them).
We would like to express our very deep appreciation to former Coordinator Valerie O’Donnell
who has managed the Site for the past six years. Valerie has helped lay a solid framework on
which we can build for the future, and for that we are extremely grateful.
Beginning on June 27, the Doak Site will be open Mondays – Saturdays from 9 am – 5 pm and
on Sundays from Noon – 5:00 pm. We are looking forward to a new beginning and especially to
welcoming our visitors over the summer months.

RE-ELECT:
                   PAUL GILLESPIE
AS COUNCILLOR FOR THE VILLAGE OF DOAKTOWN
Like every other village in the province, Doaktown has had its usual problems, but since
last March, it has had to work especially hard with the provincial and federal govern-
ments to cope with the effects of Covid-19. In many ways, though, our area has been
lucky (so far) that we have not had big outbreaks like so many others. Your help in keep-
ing those numbers low is greatly appreciated.
We have been lucky too with what is happening in Doaktown. The construction of JD
Irving, Limited’s newest sawmill is a positive development. Not only is it going to
secure permanent jobs in the community, but it will add greatly to the tax base to allow the village to better
improve its services as well as helping upgrade streets and roads.
Another positive note seen in the past year is the number of people moving back home or moving to Doak-
town. It has been many years since the Village has seen the quick sale of homes and new ones being built
on this scale. There is no question that with all our community has to offer, Doaktown is a great place to
live.
There are still improvements to be made, so the next four years will be an important time for all of us. We
must work together to acquire better internet services, improve our health care system, promote the Village
through tourism initiatives, improve the water system for Doaktown’s south side, seek out new business
initiatives, find ways to assist our seniors, provide our youth with recreational opportunities, and continue
to work harder to keep our taxes down.
I would like to continue being a part of this change. I pledge to work hard, keeping what’s best for the
Village residents always in mind. Over the years, I have enjoyed working with the residents and the Village
Council and would greatly appreciate your support on May 10th, as I run for Village Councillor.

PAUL GILLESPIE, CANDIDATE FOR VILLAGE COUNCILLOR

My name is BERESFORD (BARRY) PRICE, and I am
running for the Doaktown Village Council. I am passion-
ate about our village, its history and its future. I am
active in the Church (Anglican Parish of Ludlow and
Blissfield) and am on several committees. I have lived
in the area my entire life and have seen it grow and
change. I have a strong, results-orientated work ethic,
12 years of supervisory experience and am a Power
Engineer by trade. I believe I can work with all of you
and other council members and the Mayor to maintain
and grow our village for the future. I am great in a team
environment and am respectful of opposing opinions. I
am very involved in the community, not just with the
church, but as member of our Legion Branch #23, and
the local Library. I also worked in the Scouting move-
ment for 13 years as a leader. You can ask me any
questions you might have, and you are sure to get an
answer. Call me on my Cell: 506-365-0080. I hope to
get your vote and to sit on the Village Council of Doak-
town.

                                DOAKTOWN
The year of 2020-2021 has been
a very tough year on all munici-
palities, on families and on the
                          economy due to Covid-19.
We have rallied together as a
                          community and have had great
                          success in keeping our num-
                          bers low and everyone healthy.
Although Covid-19 has brought delays, the projects in
progress are showing good outcomes and I am
confident that they will be successful. There is still a lot
of work to be done for the Village, and I would like to
continue with that journey. So, after 20 plus years as
Councillor, I am stepping up to run for Mayor.
