Bashkakodini Freezing Moon Giizis Freezing Moon is the eleventh moon of Creation. This is a time when the stars in the night sky of the universe are closer to Mother Earth and brighter. During the day the warmth of the sun is becoming more distant. The clouds, winds and rains, are traveling across Mother Earth more frequently than any other cycle of the moons. At this time all Creation is being transformed. The animals are gathering together, while their furs are changing colours and becoming thicker. The fish are beginning to come close to shore. The birds are flocking together in their many formations. All are preparing for long journeys to the sacred circled of the fasting grounds.
GOOD TO KNOW Freezing Moon Prayer November Regular Council I offer tobacco with humbleness Meetings and respect. I come to you for guidance and vision from the teachings of Nookomis. I ask that the journey from this world to the next will lead to the sacred circle of the fasting grounds where I may understand the balance of Members wanting to Creation. I ask forgiveness for the meet with Council are things I have forgotten and things I do not speak of. Thank you to the parents, Vick Slay students, and staff for working hard to keep everyone safe. ARES staff worked hard during our well-deserved PD Day on October 8, 2021. We want our school to remain SECRETARY open so our students can catch up on all the learning they missed over the previous 13 school months. Gertie Riley Reaching the School Secretary The direct line to the Secretary is below. • 519-289-9113 – Front desk phone line • 519-289-9105- Back desk phone line. ARES sick policy Please continue to let the school know of any children away due to an illness. We are keeping a running log to monitor children away daily. Please refer to the ARES policy regarding what procedure to follow when your child is ill. We must follow the policy! When children are sick, it may be a common cold since we are in the flu season; however, to keep everyone safe, we need to follow the policy by having a COVID test done or keeping that child and any other siblings attending ARES home for ten days. After ten days, and if there are no symptoms, they can return to school. While the student is home, please connect with the teacher to ensure they have work to complete. I know this may seem like an inconvenience, but I can’t stress how important it is to keep the ARES population safe. If you need another copy of the policy, please reach out to the school secretary, or let a staff member know at drop off or pick up. 22

Parents, please remain in your vehicle during the drop-offs and pick-ups for Gertie Riley safety reasons. Also, please wait until we check the temperature before leaving the school. Bus Transportation We are continuing to work to secure buses for ARES. We currently have a couple of ARES staff members that have signed up for bus training. If everything goes as planned, we will hopefully have drivers and buses in the community soon. We will keep you posted on this situation. Bus Delay and School closures I’m using the Remind app to notify parents of school closures or bus delays. If you would like to use this App, please call the school to inform Gertie, the secretary. I have many parents currently on the list. I will send a test text message to everyone on my list on October 31, 2021. Would you please let me know if you want to be removed from the list because you no longer have kids attending ARES. Go to your app or google store and look for the app below. 23

POSTINGS: COMMUNITY I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chippewa of the Thames community members for their support during the passing of our brother, Stephen, (July 1), as well as my son, Joseph (Misko Migizi – Red Eagle) Riley, on July 22. Though Stephen was well known in the CMO community Joe was not. He did try to get home as often as possible to visit family. One year he took part in an Employment and Training program for youth: he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was able to learn many new skills. Miigwech to Janet Daubs for having the fire at her residence; and to her daughters, Crystal, Tasha, and Jaimie (Bourke) for being firekeepers. Miigwech to Emily for being a firekeeper, and her son, Royce, who sang a couple songs in Anishinaabemowin for Joe. To the Doxtator family and to Lena and Jean Kechego: Miigwech for the gift of food for the firekeepers and for all you did for us during such a difficult time. Chi-Miigwech to my nephew Matthew for being there and keeping his cousin’s memory close. To Shelagh and Brendan for being there from the beginning - Miigwech. To those who were able to attend the visitation and to those who were unable to attend but kept us in their thoughts, including relatives in Michigan, Tennessee, and California: Miigwech. A special Chi-Miigwech to Can-Am Urban Native Homes of Windsor for their extremely generous donation of $500.00 to the Orange Shirt Society, in Joseph’s memory. Joe’s beloved maternal grandmother, Milly Riley, was a Residential School Survivor. He was greatly affected when he heard about the mass grave found in Kamloops, B.C. and was heartbroken when he thought about the many children that never made it home. It touched my heart that Can-Am did this for us. Sincerely, Bernadine Riley and the Riley Family 45
