7th March 2019 VOLUME 35 ISSUE 3 A TIME TO REFLECT AND LET GO In preparation for our annual Ash Wednesday service The service further strengthened this week’s Lenten Village staff and students were invited to write down on message after students polished off almost 600 pancakes a piece of red paper one thing they would like to lay- lovingly prepared by staff as part of the Shrove Tuesday down or let go of in 2019. At Chapel on Wednesday the student worship leaders and Chaplain Adam led the College into a time of Lenten reflection commencing with the Ash Wednesday tradition of honoring a time to reflect and let go. During the service College leaders hammered the red notes onto a cross. Benson Heintze and Ariel Heinrich encouraged the audience to leave their burdens at the cross forever, making room for something new. EAST WING DEDICATION Just over 100 special guests including founding Principal Mr Brian Eckermann and wife Elizabeth, former Principal Mr Gavan Cramer, Mr Stuart Traeger, Spiritual and Cultural Leader Lutheran Education SA/NT/WA and Mr Craig Vale of ArkVale Architects attended the East Wing dedication service on Sunday 24th February. Guests were officially welcomed by College Leaders Benjamin Roennfeldt and Anneka Wilksch before Principal Steven Wilksch publicly commended Mr Craig Vale of ArkVale Architects particularly valuing his ability to genuinely listen, ensuring the world class design supported the College’s philosophy for middle school education. Thanks was also extended to SARAH Construction, Faith’s Business Manager Mr Stephen Mr Gavan Cramer, Mr Brian Eckermann, Mr Steven Grieger, ICT Operations Manager Lachlan Gierke and Wilksch the Faith College Board. For the first time, Principal Steven Wilksch shared the news of a very generous bequest of over $500,000 from past Lyndoch residents and siblings, Daphne and Wally Krieg. Represented on the day by close family friends Peter and Marie Hage, proceeds of the bequest have supported the Middle School development. He also shared some of the spiritual symbolism within the building including the locally sourced stones within the polished concrete, reflecting the solid foundation of the building and the importance of building our lives on the solid foundation found in Jesus Christ. (Luke 6:47-49) A time of worship followed before the ribbon was cut by Mr Stuart Traeger signifying the official opening. Guests enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and tour of the Middle School Building featuring musical entertainment by current music students Rachael Meissner, Ellie Schaefer, Anneka Wilksch and Nicole Ellie Schaefer and Anneka Wilksch Poulton. Amongst the guests, Nicole Owen (Class of 1990) commented how she had attended the opening of Faith (Lutheran Secondary School) as one of the first students to walk through those doors and ‘…yesterday it was wonderful for both myself, and my parents, to be there for the opening of the middle school building in which my daughter Poppy is an inaugural student. We feel incredibly blessed to share in the history of the school in this capacity.’ Chaplain Adam Yeager, Principal Steven Wilksch, Mr Craig Vale, Mr Stuart Traeger, Mr Stephen Grieger Faith Lutheran College - Faith Middle & Senior Campus THE VINEYARD, Issue 3 - 7 March 2019 Page 4

FUTURE PATHWAYS YEAR 12 PRESENTATION ON JOBS OF THE FUTURE Trish Cirillo - Pathways Coordinator On Monday the 4 of March, The University of Adelaide commenced their Regional Tour of schools. The Year 12 students had the opportunity to attend a presentation of emerging industry themes, related jobs and courses that enable students to pursue those possibilities. The two presenters, Angelika and Kahlia discussed the themes of Health Technology, Assistive Robots, Machine Learning, Blockchain Systems and Creative Design. They also discussed the emerging jobs, which was very interesting. The presenters also discussed the new courses introduced at the university in order to support these themes and interestingly they spoke of how courses focus on developing skills that are suitable to all occupations and flexible from one workplace to another. Many students were surprised by the comment made by one presenter that all courses lead to many occupations apart from the one they are studying for and that no study is wasted. Transferable skills and travel are a focus of courses offered at all universities and we too value these skills at Faith. At the end of the presentation, students had the opportunity to collect course brochures and ask individual questions of the presenters. It was a well- attended and informative presentation. 2019 MENGLER VIEW WINES VINTAGE REPORT Bob Mitchell Learning Area Coordinator, Agriculture On Monday 18 February Marianne Nelson’s class went to the Duck’s Flat vineyard of St Hallett Wines. They generously gave us access to pick as much Semillon as we required. Students handpicked 1 Tonne of fruit between recess and lunch and had the parcel of fruit crushed and pressed by the end of the school day. Duck Flat Semillon harvest On Wednesday 27th February, a 2 Tonne load of Sauvignon Blanc was generously delivered to the College, by donors Shane and Leanne Kraft who own the vineyard across the road from the Faith Senior Campus. The fruit was machine harvested late Tuesday night ready for Mr Mitchell’s class to crush and press by 1.00 pm on Wednesday. On Friday 1st March, 29 keen and eager students met at the Bethany vineyard of David and Kathy Liersch at 6.30 am for an early start to hand pick some short rows in the contour planted block of Riesling. The Liersch’s have generously donated fruit from this block over the Liersch Riesling Block at Bethany photographed by a drone last 10 years. After a challenging week of 37 degrees plus days, the fruit stood up remarkably well. Picking was relatively easy due to the light canopy and crop yield. The students also had the opportunity to view a trailed machine harvester in operation and witnessed how challenging a tight, contour planted block was to harvest. A Faith bus carried students back to the Faith Wine Education Centre to enjoy a sumptuous breakfast before crushing and pressing the 1 Tonne of Riesling. Our white crush is nearly finished apart from a 1 Tonne parcel of Eden Valley Riesling donated by Fechner Holdings of Angaston. All fruit is ripening fast and we expect to start are red crush beginning with Shiraz during Week 6. YEAR 9 SCIENCE QUESTACON – SMART SKILLS WORKSHOP Leewen Rattanatray Science Learning Area Co-ordinator On Tuesday 5th of March we were visited by Helen and Erin-Jane from Questacon, Canberra. Questacon tour secondary schools all around Australia delivering hands-on STEM workshops focussing on innovative design thinking, testing and refining ideas. Faith was their last stop on their tour before they returned to Canberra, so we were very fortunate to have them touring in our region. Lily Johnson and Matilda Collett All year 9 students participated in the “Wind Tunnel” workshop in which they were faced with the challenge of designing an object which would fly the highest and hover the longest in a wind tunnel. Students designed both digital and practical prototypes using different materials and had the opportunity to test and refine their designs. They had great fun testing their prototypes, they were challenged creatively and demonstrated tenacity in the process of refining of their prototypes. It was a great opportunity for them to step outside of the classroom and enjoy Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in a different setting. LUTHERAN SCHOOLS - OPEN DAYS DID YOU KNOW? Each year Faith welcomes students from over 20 public and Lutheran primary schools from the Barossa and beyond? As the only ELC - Year 12 Lutheran school in the region, we work closely with our neighbouring schools to welcome students at all stages of their educational journey. WHAT MAKES A LUTHERAN SCHOOL SPECIAL? We call it the ‘L’ Factor… As young people grow and learn, they are influenced by family, friends, media and their school. As leaders we believe that young people who have experienced a Lutheran education have the ‘L’ factor…… the ‘Lutheran’ factor. Not only are these students identifiable because of their love of learning, but because of their social, emotional and spiritual awareness. Graduates of Lutheran schools are ‘world ready’ and often demonstrate compassion, service, love for others, confidence and a desire to make a difference in their world. It is that time of year that many of our neighbouring schools are hosting Open Days and tours. If you would like to find out more about the ‘L’ Factor, you may wish to consider attending one in your area… Good Shepherd Lutheran School Immanuel Lutheran School Lobethal Lutheran School School Tours & Classroom Opening Open Day Sunday 24th March Community Day Thursday 22nd March Principal’s Tour 3pm Wednesday 10th April Classroom opening 9am 11 Lyndoch Road, Gawler 9am - 11am School Tours from 10.30am Phone 8522 5740 48 Main Street, Lobethal 7 Neldner Avenue, Angaston www.ilsg.sa.edu.au Phone 8389 6131 Phone 8564 2396 www.lobelu.sa.edu.au www.goodshepherd.sa.edu.au Redeemer Lutheran School St Jakobi Lutheran School St John’s Lutheran School Principal’s Tour Open Day coming in Term 2 Open Morning Wednesday 27th March Lyndoch Valley Road, Lyndoch Tuesday 26th March 9am Phone 8524 4137 9.30am - 12.30pm Vine Street, Nuriootpa www.stjakobi.sa.edu.au 8 Ward Street, Eudunda Phone 8562 1655 Phone 8581 1282 www.redeemer.sa.edu.au www.stjohns-eudunda.edu.au Faith Lutheran College Open Day Thursday 28th March 9am - 11am Middle & Senior Campus 11.30am - 1pm ELC & Junior Campus 130 Magnolia Road, Tanunda Phone 8561 4200 www.faith.sa.edu.au Faith Lutheran College - Faith Middle & Senior Campus THE VINEYARD, Issue 3 - 7 March 2019 Page 14
