WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY?
When the opportunity arises for a little practice on the nearby wicket, it is also unwise for a boy
(or girl) to tax his (her) strength in trying to bowl the ball 22 yards when he (she) may just as
easily pitch the wickets 15 yards apart, thereby conserving his (her) energy, and helping him (her)
to be more accurate at a stage when it is imperative for him (her) to learn the value of accuracy in
bowling.
Sir Donald Bradman, How to Play Cricket, 1958

The formats have been designed based on evidence of what kids are capable of doing. The
games are going to be matched to what their abilities are, so that mean we can make the

MATCH MANAGEMENT TIPS
Ways for coaches to keep your game moving and finishing on time.
• Complete your team-sheet the night before the game.
• Set up team marquees close to the boundary.
• Make sure the scorers are sitting under shade and close to the boundary to assist
with player names and advising ball counts.
• Involve parent volunteers to assist with marking boundaries, crease lines and shade
shelters leaving the coach to work with their team running warm-ups, etc.
• centre
  batters.
• Have all your batters padded up ready to go in to bat with the next batter ready to
go onto the field (helmet & batting gloves on).
•
• Encourage fielders to job between positions ready for the next over.
• When rotating extra players onto the field, swap them wit the bowler who is just
  finishing their over.
• Swap wicket-keepers during a drink break.
• Place team drinks and water bottles together in a carry tray near the boundary.
• The central umpire is the critical driver of the game, the time it is played in and the
spirit in which it is played.
                                                                                            10

ROLE OF THE COACH
Coaches play a pivotal role in the success of the Junior Playing Formats by ensuring the integrity of the
game is enforced in every match through:-
• Consistent pitch and boundary markings
• Adherence to Rules and By-Laws

enjoyment of the game. They can also assist by providing advice to players in the correct wearing of helmets
and other protective equipment.

Coaches should encourage other parents to be involved in match-day field set-up, umpiring, scoring and at
training sessions setting out equipment, managing drills and time-keeping. This will allow the coach to spend
more time focusing on player skill development.

Research shows that the Coach plays a major part in player retention rates and enjoyable player experience.
                                                                                                            16

After hearing the new rules developed for Junior Cricket, as a coach, what might you see
more of & how might you need to adapt your coaching focus for the following areas:

Batting?
Bowling?
Fielding?

Match Management?

                                                                                           17
A CHANGE OF COACHING FOCUS

    • Fuller balls being bowled more vertical bat shots being played.
    • Adjusting to slightly faster carry of the ball more off-side shots.
    • More balls in play = more balls to hit & less fielders = more runs!

• Fielding
    • More area to cover attack, pick-up, throw, catch, back-up, teamwork.
    • Involvement more balls to field.
    • Wicket-keepers more balls on pitch, therefore more involvement.
