3 Australia Day is a day for all Australians No matter where our personal stories began. It’s a day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate contemporary Australia and to acknowledge our history. Who we are The Australia Day Council Northern Territory is a community based not-for-profit incorporated body. Established in 1986 we have been working with Northern Territory communities for thirty years. While closely aligned to the Northern Territory Government and National Australia Day Council as well as Australia Day Councils in other states and territories. We operate as an independent body responsible for our own management, events and activities, finance and governance. Why we are here Our purpose To work with and for the people of the Northern Territory to: • Unite through reflection, celebration and inclusiveness, • Foster and recognise excellence and service within our communities, • Embrace cultural diversity and promote our national day with respect and integrity, • Facilitate productive relationships across the Territory, and • Ensure our sustainability.

We will do this by: • Recognising great Australians • Encouraging engagement across our communities • Collaborating with like-minded organisations • Building a sustainable organisation • Inspiring a “feel good” factor towards Australia Day Our strategic themes At its core Australia Day is a day driven by community participation.

9 How will we achieve this Our plan COLLABORATION Identify organisations that are strategically aligned with our organisations and will benefit both parties by sharing and enhancing activities. • Review current programs and structures and look for opportunities to engage new partnerships including government and private sector. • Develop strategic partnerships or alignments both financial and in kind. • Formulate MOU with existing event partners to ensure sustainability of events. Build strong working relationships with our networks across the Territory and Australia • Create two professional development opportunities a year that the network can benefit from. • Participate in NADC meetings and actively engage other states and Territories to be involved with events and programs. • Engage with communities to develop a platform to share stories. ENGAGEMENT Evolve Australia Day to ensure activities are inclusive and respectful of all Territorians • Work closely with the Office of Aboriginal Affairs and other stakeholders to ensure Aboriginal peoples, cultural and history are acknowledged. • Introduce elements of language into events. • Seek out opportunities to engage with multicultural groups and people with disabilities. Encourage and support Australia Day events across the Territory. • Board members to attend Australia Day events outside of Darwin each year. • Leverage the NT Government to hold a community grants program. • Explore a strategy that supports volunteers and members. • Develop a resource that provides event organisers with information that assists in delivering of a meaningful, respectful and inclusive Australia Day. Share the Australia Day message throughout the year, not just on Australia Day. • Stimulate discussion and debate through public forums. • Ensure events are held across the Territory not just in Darwin. • Be a leader to help the community articulate what Australia Day is and being Australian means. RECOGNITION Identify and celebrate great Territorians who contribute to our community. • Ensure that our awards programs are relevant, sustainable and inclusive so we reach as many people as possible. • Review awards guidelines and criteria to ensure they are inclusive and relevant. • Develop an online nomination portal for Student Citizen and Citizen of the Year Awards.

11 Increase awareness of awards programs • Develop a marketing strategy for Territory based awards, and work with NADC to ensure broad promotion of the Australian of the Year Awards. Further engagement with Awards Alumni • Establish an NT Ambassadors program. • Develop a talent pool for sponsors and community initiatives. SUSTAINABILITY Ensure the operational effectiveness of the office. • Review and update the constitution. • Develop and implement good governance best practice policies and procedures. • Seek out professional development opportunities for employees. • Develop and distribute an annual report. • Introduce governance training for Board members. Maintain a diverse and engaged Board • Develop a Board Charter as part of members’ induction. • Set annual participation goals for Board Members. • Board members to actively attend networking events throughout the year. • Promote Board vacancies through a variety of platforms to ensure a diverse reach of the community. Financial Independence • Develop sponsorship agreements that exceed one year. • Review current activities and expenditure to ensure their viability. • Develop a corporate sponsorship program that allows untied funds. • Secure a sponsor for OZ Sports. • Make annual budget allowances to ensure revenue is set in reserves. Annual review of strategy and charter. • Ensure that goals remain relevant and deliverable. FEEL GOOD Ensure events and programs and reflect Australia Day Council NT values and purpose. • Develop a communication and marketing plan. • Hold events that showcase our goals and inspire attendees. • Form an emotional connection with those that attend events. • Evaluate events to ensure activities are relevant and meeting our goals. • Continue to manage and enhance our foundation events the OZ RUN and Dinner. • Develop a new sponsorship proposal for the OZ RUN. • Ensure the OZ RUN continues to enhance its “fun” aspect and not become a sophisticated race. • Ensure our overall calendar of events appeal to a cross section of the community. • Where possible connect events with great Australians.
