cover story 04 / PAPER MAGAZINE INDUSTRIES FOR THE FUTURE THESE SECTORS ARE RESILIENT TO COVID-19 On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus a global pandemic, after having declared a global health emergency in late January. Since then, countries around the world have entered into lockdowns and economies are still suffering from the crippling effects of COVID-19, which shows no sign of abating. Although some sectors are severely affected and might just disappear off the grid forever, there are others which have proven to be resilient to COVID-19, and are experiencing unprecedented growth. Below, we predict the industries which are likely to remain promising for the future. Health and Wellness Despite shutting gyms and wellness centres earlier in the pandemic, health and wellness continue to remain important sectors that won’t just simply disappear overnight, On the contrary, the pandemic has elevated our concern for health, leading to an upsurge in the health and wellness sectors. Even as communal gyms are facing plummeting businesses, home exercise programs and the fitness equipment industry are booming. Keep, a Chinese fitness app that offers workout programs ranging from yoga to cycling, saw its ranking in the China’s iOS app store shoot up the rankings, in terms of downloads on the Apple App Store since the onset of the pandemic. Live broadcasts of fitness classes have also surged across all virtual fitness platforms across the globe. As people are staying home more often, sales of indoor fitness equipment have also seen a boost. Data from JD.com revealed that during the epidemic outbreak, sales of skipping ropes rose 56 percent, dumbbells 60 percent and yoga mats soared 150 percent.
05 Online Doctors/Telehealth Unless they are truly desperate, people are steering clear of hospitals, especially now that hospitals might be filled to the brim of COVID-19 patients. Even those with flu-like symptoms don’t make the hospital their first port-of-call. Instead, they headed online. Online medicine platforms like JD Health saw respiratory-related queries surge tenfold. JD Health general manager Xiao Junbo said that they saw five to seven times as many consultations from people worried about their mental health. Alihealth reported that its first 24 hours of launch on Jan. 25 saw around 400,000 visits to its homepage. It fielded an average of 3,000 consultations per hour. Newly registered users increased tenfold for Ping An Good Doctor, which also reported 1.1 billion visits during the outbreak period. Dingxiang, another online consultation provider, reported over 1 million consultations as of Feb. 20. One thing is for sure: This new-age model of healthcare is here to stay. Online education and remote Digital marketing learning The digital marketing field has been a growing During this outbreak, many have turned to one long before the world even heard the term online education and EdTech companies are Covid-19. But with the pandemic normalising experiencing a boom, as worldwide traditional work-from-home (WFH) culture and shifting more learning/training institutions are accelerating their consumption online, capturing your prospects’ transformation to remote teaching. Digital display ads, social media, and online video channels are most likely to see an increase in media investments. While traditional media is still the biggest advertising driver in the industry, COVID-19 has wounded its investments by 50 percent this year. Hence, the digital medium will likely take up at least 50 percent of the advertising spend.
cover story 06 / PAPER MAGAZINE 06 Online food and grocery delivery With millions worldwide in quarantine or on lockdown, and the rise of social distancing rules, food and grocery delivery companies are experiencing an unprecedented boom. For instance, downloads of Alibaba’s grocery delivery app ‘Fresh Hema’ peaked during February, reaching nearly 100,000 downloads in a single day, compared to an average of approximately 29,000 per day during 2019. As countries slowly and steadily materialise from the lockdown to embrace what many of us refer to as the ‘new normal’, the foodservice and delivery industry, which encompasses the cloud kitchens or delivery-only kitchens, will likely continue to experience strong growth, as consumers continue their heightened sense of food safety and hygiene. Food delivery and virtual restaurants are definitely the dominant models for the future. Remote business solutions Nowadays, the enterprise software industry is picking up faster than ever before with remote work apps witnessing a boom as millions resort to working from home. Downloads of indigenous work apps like Alibaba’s DingTalk, Tencent’s WeChat Work, ByteDance’s Lark, as well as America’s Zoom, jumped exponentially amid the health crisis. App rankings show that all three Chinese apps experienced significant growth in downloads; DingTalk: 1,446 percent, Lark: 6,085 percent, Online gaming WeChat Work: 572 percent. Similarly, Tencent’s The coronavirus has changed the global Asian gaming giants Nintendo and Tencent both business-focused meeting app, Tencent Meeting, economic landscape forever, and companies saw sales increases during the first quarter. Analysis from GamesIndustry. biz shows that sales across 50 key markets rose by 63%. Even games released during the pandemic are performing well, with titles as varied as Doom Eternal (a first-person shooter) and Animal Crossing (a world-building simulation) both breaking sales records after launching. This is reflective of data from Comcast that shows how new game downloads have increased by 80%, compared to a rise of ‘only’ 50% in total gaming downloads. Drive-in theatres Drive-in movie theatres could be making a comeback, following years of decline due to cinemas moving into shopping malls and services like Netflix bringing the big screen to people’s homes. Social distancing rules have closed many regular movie theatres and so, drive-ins offer a way to escape the confines of home quarantine and be entertained while keeping interaction with others to a minimum.

The BYD Han series sports the ‘Dragon Face’ design language - from striking front grille to Dragon Claw tail lights - the car’s stylised design nicely depicts a mix of eastern and western design aesthetics. The Han EV series has been named after one of the most celebrated dynasties in the Chinese history - the Han Dynasty - and clearly demonstrates the significant progress towards manufacturing electric vehicles. In terms of technology, BYD has developed the Han series’ roof with advanced laser brazing technology as well as 1500HS thermoformed steel for robustness. 11 standard airbags and six cameras, highly-efficient air purification filters, among others are Han’s notable safety features. For the interiors, BYD has equipped the Han series with solid wooden panels, high-quality Napa leather seats, aluminium trims and other premium materials.

14muse PAPER MAGAZINE T he South Korean designer, who emerged as the winner of the Netflix fashion competition, the wildly popular Next in Fashion, is the antithesis of the stereotypical fashion designer. The usual perceptions of fashion designers, are that they are typically quirky with their eccentricities and possess an air of superiority. But, from contestants to judges on the show, right down to her peers, it is impossible to fall in love with Kim Minju, who has mesmerized everyone with not just her eye-catching fashion designs, but also her bubbly charm, genuine humility and her infectious optimism. For Kim Minju, pursuing fashion design is not SPREADING JOY to become a mega fashion superstar who commands a legion of fanatical followers. To her, the reward lies not in the money or the THROUGH FASHION: newfound fame. “I learned to trust myself in any situation,” she said. “I had so many questions in my mind when creating my KIM MINJU collections. I feel like I have proven to myself that what I have been doing is something right.” Next in Fashion’s viewers and judges alike would agree. Through each themed challenge on the show, Minju’s unabashed femininity and love of volume would shine through - and they are a delight to behold. Her airy creations inspire the adolescent excitement of dressing up that brands like Molly Goddard and Simone Rocha offer. They also exude the same joy you could find in Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino haute couture. Yet, Minju’s aesthetical creations are all her own, heavily influenced by her Korean heritage. For the pattern-making challenge, for example, she created a print of a forsythia, a flower that blooms in spring in Gwangju. The wide hems and saccharine hues of her dresses can also be traced to the hanbok, the traditional dress of Korea. She just wants to make you smile The ability to blend eastern and western design elements is not easy but she does it with relative ease. Perhaps, this can be attributed to her attending Samsung Art and Design Institute (SADI) in Seoul, which lies north of her hometown, Gwangju, before she jetted off to Belgium to hone her skills at the Royal Academy of Fine Antwerp, where she managed to clinch the H&M Design Award in 2013. Her talent didn’t go unnoticed and it was during the competition when she really impressed the viewers and the judges with her harmonious synergy and exuberance in her designs. And these loveable traits really came through in her designs for Net-a-Porter and her own label, MINJUKIM. When asked about what she loves about being a fashion designer, she answered, “I really love seeing real, ‘regular’ people wearing my collection. I hope to put smiles on people who wear my designs.” Given that some of her designs are already sold out online, it’s safe to say she has accomplished that mission.
