President’s Message - Cindy Stewart Presidents Message August 2020 Wow we are already half way through the summer and what a summer it has been. I love the heat although must say there were even a few days that were too hot for me! The Board will be meeting on August 18 to revisit our decision to remain closed. We have asked for input from all our different activities to see how and what their activities would look like once we do open. We will let you know our decision through the different media formats. The staff and some of the Board have been involved in both conference and Zoom calls to keep ourselves up to date on the different protocols and regulations as the province sends them out. Jonie has been busy filling out grants as well. We have also done some maintenance to the building such as power washing (our son Patrick did that) I washed some windows and the landing by the kitchen has been stained and of course our volunteers that are maintaining the plants and grounds. Everything is looking really good. Even a fox decided to was nice enough to take a nap on the concrete steps. (See front cover) The foreman at the new building came over and they scraped the area where are garden boxes will be going. Thanks so much. Would also like to thank Sharon Peichl for all her contributions over the years as well as serving on the Board and President. We are not only losing her to Winnipeg but also several other members who all make important contributions to our centre are leaving the community. 4

More from our past…. History of the summer camps Thank you to Dilla Narfason for this info on the history of the camp that eventually became the New Horizons. From the Gimli Saga 1975 http://www.mb1870.org/localhistor y/013%20- %20Gimli%20Saga,%20Gimli%20 Women's%20Institute.pdf 6
So you want to help out the club??? Here’s a few ideas how to help us out. . . . . ● Volunteer some time to help with the yard this summer ● Purchase the clothing we have in our stock. Mens and Ladies vests and jackets still available. Be nice to clear out our stock. ● Volunteer to deliver newsletters - once we get back open and start delivering again, we need some new volunteers to help shorten the routes around town. ● New activity ideas always welcome - just complete the form we have for new activity start up and it will go to a board meeting. ● Once things are back to normal: Support our lunches on Fridays - take out is an option! Support the 50/50 draws - we pay for many projects with this fundraiser Enjoy our always on coffee pot - but remember to pay for your coffee or tea. Pay your membership renewal on time - we love when they are all paid by end of the year at the latest! Always have a smile on your face - happy people are nice to be around. Look what we got!!! We received 12 - 32 GB 7Th Generation IPads from monies received from a grant from The Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund & Westshore Community Foundation Available for signout at the office. 7
Volunteer & Membership My two cents - as staff of New Horizons Centre So this year is a very unusual year for all of us. No one could have predicted that we would be closed for this long (March 17 - now). So what does this really mean for the Centre? Well no activities = no revenue coming into the Centre. We have applied for some grants to help with some much needed work but they are not guaranteed to be received. We are hoping that volunteers can help pitch in where possible. Members will undoubtedly be wondering what is happening with membership. At this point we are hoping to have renewals available in October. Likely no large gathering or lunch and games but we will see what happens over the summer. We need to stress (more than any other year) the importance of membership. It’s not only your pass into the Centre to attend your favorite activity….. it’s so much more…… it’s your support to keep the Centre going. We need membership even if you don’t attend any functions or activities. It tells us you are there to help us keep the doors open and the Centre operating. So when we renew the upcoming annual memberships please renew with pride - our Centre thanks you! New memberships for those 50+ are always welcome. The Membership year runs from Oct 1 - Sept 30 each year and at affordable pricing of $25/year for those 55+ and $30/yr 50 - 54 yrs. Donations to the Centre are also always welcomed by anyone young or old. Tax receipts are issued for any donation over $25. WE need this Centre to thrive and be here when our own children are 55+ and want to be a part of an active senior community. SO you see membership is more than just participation ****It’s about belonging**** After more than 24 years in the RM of Gimli, Sharon Peichl is moving back to Winnipeg to be closer to her family. She has been very involved with New Horizons. Here are some (but probably not all) of the things she did for the Club: bridge lessons, contract and duplicate bridge, book club, petal pushers, kitchen duties including Friday lunches, pancake breakfast and fall supper. She served as President and was on the board for many years. Thank you for service to New Horizons and the community. We will miss you. (Lynda Dodunski) 8

Community Service A message about the Manitoba Housing Project New Horizons does not have anything to do with this project. But thought it was time to get some answers for the many people that appear interested in this apartment building once its completed. News from GSR Inc (Gimli Senior Residence Inc) We are proud and thrilled that a 40 Apartment complex is currently being constructed on the parking lot of New Horizon. This building is owned and will be operated by MB Housing. They are anticipating the opening in early 2021. It was a vision of a committee started back in 2011 that consisted of a number of town residents whose primary purpose was to see the construction of a much needed complex. In 2018 The project was merged with another proposed project at the MB Housing (New Haven) site which was originally to renovate, expand, or replace the property at New Haven. The RM & MB Housing agreed to relocate the 40 unit complex to the site south of New Horizons and preserve the New Haven building. The waiting list that was initiated by GSR Inc in 2011 is not valid as GSR Inc does not own the building. When a management company is hired and they start the application process for the new tenants, it will be advertised and posted by that company. The entrance qualification is income based. For more information please visit the Manitoba web site. https://www.gov.mb.ca/housing/progs/renters.html Lina Allegro President of GSR Inc 10

Useless information . . . But fun Unique phobias (ok I got bored so here is some fun stuff you likely never knew) Specific phobias tend to be incredibly specific. But what do you think these are: Some so much so that they may only affect a Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia handful of people at a time. These are difficult - Fear of ?___________________ to identify because most people don’t report Triskaidekaphobia - fear of ? unusual fears to their doctors. Examples of some of the more unusual phobias include: ______________________ Thaasohpobia - the fear of ? Alektorophobia Fear of chickens _________________________ Arachnophobia Fear of spiders Go ahead and google them. . . . Coulrophobia Fear of clowns Elurophobia Fear of cats (Answers on the back page) Gamophobia Fear of marriage Thanks for this Hemophobia Fear of blood challenge goes Iatrophobia Fear of doctors Nosocomephobia Fear of hospitals out to Lavona Clarke. Fun and Humor Dryer sheet uses - (you likely didn’t know about) Clean Your Glasses - Throw a few dryer sheets in your purse for times you need to clean your glasses on-the-go Clean your oven racks -If your oven racks are grimy, fill your bathtub halfway with warm water, add your oven racks and toss in half a cup of dish soap and eight dryer sheets. Let them soak overnight, scrub them down with the dryer sheets and rinse A great Gim li laugh! Deer Repellent - As much as we love the scent of dryer sheets, deer do not. You should cut dryer sheets into strips and tie them to trees and branches. The scent will deter deer from your property Deters Dust on Blinds - If you get a lot of dust on your blinds, consider swiping them with a dryer sheet. This will deter dust from landing on them, which makes for easier cleaning Freshen up a vacuum - Have a stinky vacuum? Pop a new dryer sheet into the canister or bag before you vacuum. Both your vacuum and room will smell fresh. Freshen Your Stinky Shoes - Are you a runner or golfer? Or dealing with extra sweaty feet? When stowing your shoes, slip in a few dryer sheets to banish the stink. Insect Repellent - Ward off a variety of bugs with dryer sheets. Stuff them in your shirt pocket while working or playing outside to keep mosquitoes from feasting on your blood. There is something about the scent of dryer sheets that mosquitoes just don’t enjoy. If you get eaten alive by mosquitoes, consider putting some dryer sheets in your pockets or tied around a belt loop to deter them. Remove Dead Bugs from Your Car’s Grill - Do you know how nasty your car or truck gets after a road trip? Rather than scrubbing those dead bugs from the front of your car, wipe the grill with a dryer sheet or two. Remove Pet Hair from Clothing - You love your pet, but your pup or kitty is notorious for leaving clumps of hair behind. Your white-haired pooch sheds tiny white hairs that consistently ruin your evening look, and your black cat ruins anything cream or light-colored. Use clingy dryer sheets to snatch up stray pet hairs and make your clothing look good as new. 14
From some of our activity leaders. . . . FLOOR CURLING - Hello Curlers! Mavis & Vera Usually in this issue of the Hilites we advise everyone the start date for our fall curling season! This year is the exception! Unfortunately due to the COVID virus, the New Horizons is still closed and will remain so until further notice. So until our Board is able to make the decision to open, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place! When opening date happens, we will still probably have many decisions to make; social distancing, sanitizing, masks, start date, how many playing surfaces we can use, how many teams we can accommodate, etc, etc! And the list goes on! (Ugg, I have a headache already!) But we will persevere and hopefully will have a season to look forward to. Here’s what we can do in the meantime. When the club closed and the season ended so abruptly in March, we had just begun to compile a list of curlers for our fall season. As a result we do not have nearly everyone’s name and information. VERA AND I WILL BE CONTACTING EVERYONE ON OUR REGISTRATION LISTS (regular and spares) TO SEE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN CURLING WHEN WE CAN GET STARTED. We plan on doing this the first two weeks of August. If you haven’t received a call by August 14th please call : Vera at 204-642-9391 Mavis at 204-642-8651 New Horizons Office at 204-642-7909 and we’ll get you on the list. When we have this information we will be able to make plans for the season once we get the go-ahead from the Centre. In the meantime, continue to have a safe, healthy summer and hopefully we will be full steam ahead in a few months. 15

Petal Pushers - Sharon Peichl Wow! If you haven't dropped in at the Centre, it is worth the trip to see how the planters are bursting with enthusiastic plants and flowers. Many thanks for those donated lilies! They are an amazing array! Just a few hours by a few members have turned out so very well! From some of our activity leaders. . . . Kayaking Returns! I liked the experience. Not the same as canoeing but a wonderful time on the creek. Rob gave great instructions and we worked hard paddling against the wind on the second day. Some aches but that’s normal. Thanks for organizing that. Heather —–––––––––––––--—–––––––––––––––––––––– The kayak clinic was the best! Rob is excellent instructor, taught & pointed out aspects of the area as we paddled along also. For a beginner kayaker I was more successful with the lessons. Rob sent photos of group & I gained new kayaking friends. Vera –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––--—–––––-–– Kayaking was great, more than I expected. It was not only great to be on the water, but learning a little about different kayaks, safety equipment, and technique. The 2nd day, going through the marshes to the Willow Island was so challenging because the wind was just a little breezy when we started out but by noon it was gusting to 40kph!. WE had to learn to get out of the "soup" of the weeds, reeds, moss, lilies, . I worked way harder than I anticipated going out that morning. WE faced that west wind all the way back to starting point. I was apprehensive knowing we were going towards the lake but Willow Island was far enough. I'm going to have to practice getting in and out, that's tougher than it looks. All in all, it was great!! - Sis ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-—–––––—–––––––––––––––––– I had a Great Time, It was very worth it in my experience. I am going to buy a Kayak based on my experience with the group! - Richard THANKS ROB for your expertise and your passion for kayaking. 20
More kayaking experiences . . . . July 21 and 23 brought some adventure. The 4 of us went kayaking through Willow Creek to the lake entrance. On the 21st went right out to the lake and experienced turning in waves (granted they were tiny), then the 23rd with winds of 30 km again made our way to the lake with a few rest stops in the willows along the way. The waves were pretty big so didn't go on to the lake. On the ride back we could even use our oars as sails. Needless to say it was a "breeze" coming back. Saw lots of pelicans, geese, ducks and even the ospreys were out as well over the 2 days. - Cindy NEXT UP - paddle on Aug 13th to a new location. Its’ still a secret where he’s taking us. A few spots still available. Meeting at 10 am. Payment by cash or cheque to Gimli New Horizons by Aug 7th Monday - Fritday 9 - 4 Aug 25 - meeting at 10 am. Location TDB. Payment by cash or cheque to Gimli New Horizons by Aug 7th Monday - Fritday 9 - 4 Both these adventures are $60 per person and payment required to hold your spot. 21
From some of our activity leaders. . . . TAP DANCE CLASSES…with Carol and Deborah at Gimli New Horizons 55+. Tap shoes are not a necessary. Call us when we re-start…let’s get a group together. Get into your Fred and Ginger mode for some fun. Dates & Times will be announced upon re-opening. Sketching - Rosemary Dzus David Hockney is an English painter, photographer, draftsman, printmaker and stage designer. In 2018, his painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), sold at auction for some $90 million, breaking the record for a living artist. Now in his mid-80s, he has experimented with many materials and techniques throughout his career. Earlier this year, his recent work and the Covid-19 lockdown inspired a collaboration among several French institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Theatre du Chatelet (a theatre and opera house) and France Inter, a public radio channel and part of Radio France. Artists were invited to “produce a work like David Hockney, around Spring and the message of hope it conveys.” Participants were reassured that they need not mimic Hockney’s most recent work, but rather “evoke the awakening of nature in spring and the hope that it can arouse in us.” In a letter to the artistic director of the Theatre du Chatelet, Hockney writes: “Why are my designs received like a respite from this whirlwind of scary news? They bear witness to the cycle of life which begins again here with the start of spring. I will endeavour to continue this work now that I have appre- ciated its importance. My life is fine for me, I have something to do: paint.” Especially if you need some cheering up, I’d suggest taking a look at Hockney’s recent work, and the finalists in the “Draw Like Hockney” competition. - Gail Hurak Who are we? We are a group of active people who love to dance and want to have fun on the dance floor in our community. We, also, love to go out socially. You will see us dancing any of the following: east coast swing, fox-trot, waltz, rumba, cha-cha, country 2-step, old time waltz, polka and more. This is an informal dance class. Who can participate? Any member of New Horizons is welcome to show up. We dance from September to May but that is Covid rules dependent. 23
From Our Activity Leaders Moving Together Tai Chi Gimli - Phyllis Holmes We are enjoying another fabulous summer in Gimli. The Tai Chi class is loving performing Tai Chi in Gimli Park. The participants think our music mixed with the sound of birds and the rustling of the tree leaves and breezes is perfect for performing Tai Chi. It is so serene and meditative and scenic that everyone is looking forward to each class. I would like participants to tell me where is the most scenic/exciting/unique place that you have practiced Tai Chi and I will include your story in my future reports. Recently I did a set of Tai Chi while standing on the rock surface and overlooking the Seven Sisters Generating Station. I have also done sets on the outdoor stage in the beautiful park across from the Moose Jaw Mineral Springs Hotel and on the beaches of Hawaii. Phone me at 204-642-9054 with your story or bring it to me at our next class. 24
From Our Activity Leaders BRIDGE NEWS - Sharon Peichl How weird to see that cards are such a dangerous activity! We are so hoping for a Fall reprieve from this deprivation!! Just a few of us have chanced covert games at home. Such a pleasure to see a puzzled face across the table – how can I bid this hand??? what do I answer that bid?? what is trump again? Not HIM – the suit!!! This will pass like a bad hand! We will be together again to share some good times over the tables. Hang in there friends! SO LONG, IT'S BEEN GREAT TO KNOW YOU ALL!! After all the many activity news, kitchen news, board news, bridge news and flower news I have written for your infor- mation and occasional enjoyment, I am experiencing very mixed emotions writing now my final Hilites comments. I have enjoyed 24 years in Gimli and most of that at our wonderful New Horizons Centre! Time to move near the kids and other family while I can still organize the operation! So many friendly faces, so many busy hours, a few crisis averted by a timely 'sav- ior' and time spent after the event with the best co-pilots ever over all those years! Lots of laughter but no tears until now! I can't begin to list the names of all the special folks I have encountered, but I must mention the supreme luck that New Horizons was dealt when they hired Jonie! And then Chris and now Carol have complemented the service we have enjoyed from the office. The Boards have worked hard, but the load was made lighter by our devoted staff! My years in Gimli will remain a 'Hilite' of my memories many thanks to so many stellar members of our fine Centre. THANKS FOR THOSE MEMORIES! – Sharon Peichl 25
From Our Activity Leaders Circle Dancers I have continued to offer Zoom Circle dance classes and have people from across Canada and Florida California just to name a few. It’s been magical. We have met in person twice to distance dance in Beachside Park in Winnipeg Beach and had about 12 people. Next one will be August 9 at 1pm. Come join us or ask for link and visit Zoom class. It’s amazing how lovely it is. Linda Rankin www.lindarankin.com Perogies, Perogies, Perogies . . . . A delicious morsel of potatoes, cheese & dough. We would like to see the entire crew back: - the supply buyers, potato peelers, filling makers, dough maker, the sheeter operators, the potato/cheese ball makers, the circle makers, pinchers, cookers, coolers, runners, packers,m phoning and selling helpers, dishwashers and cleanup crew and the lunch and coffee time crew. All these jobs and you are all very important. It is a great fundraiser at $4.50 per dozen to help pay the New Horizon bills. We are always open to welcome newcomers. - Your servant perogy head Michael Michaluk 26
So I have advertising opportunities to offer local business owners that are not currently running ads in our Hilites - call for details. 204-642-7909 (Carol) Long term (annual) or spot ad (monthly) available. Pass this on to any business in town that you think may benefit from this offer. New to town? Good way to get some quick news that you are 27
The Back Page . . . Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - Hi-poh-po-toh-mon-stroh-ses-kwee-peh-dah-leejoh-foh-beeja Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is probably taken from the root word sesquipedalian, which means "long word." Therefore, sesquipedalophobia is technically more correct. But somewhere along the line, someone added references to the hippopotamus and monsters to make the word sound even more intimidating. How ironic that the name for the fear of long words is itself 35 letters long. Triskaidekaphobia - Answers to tris·kai·dek·a·pho·bi·a Phobia Is the extreme superstition regarding the number thirteen Challenge Thaasophobia - thaa-so-pho-bi-a This is the fear and intense hatred of boredom Well that’s another Hilites done. . . . Lets hope September will look different if we have some activities started up 28
