YOUTH SERVICES UPDATES Yout h Services Updat es The Youth Services team was humbled to have 726 young readers and their families choose SCPL and participate in the 2019 Summer Library Program. It was our joy to celebrate reading and learning with the community throughout the 10 week program. Finale Programs were held July 23 and featured the traveling planetarium from Cosmic Adventures. The SC Fire Department hosted the planetarium (which wouldn't fit in the library!), and many readers and family members joined us for a session ?under the stars.? During the big Summer Library Prize Party held July 25 at Oakes Field, we hosted a record crowd of around 400 people who enjoyed bouncy houses, snow cones, and cotton candy provided by the City of South Charleston; visits and giveaways from library partners Edible Arrangements, Element Credit Union, and Chick-fil-A of Southridge; and the announcement of the young readers who won the 137 items from the Wall of Prizes (video available on Facebook). At the Prize Party, we also drew winning tickets earned by those who completed a survey to help us continue improving summer library programs. Items generously donated by community members included: Charleston Light Opera Guild tickets to see Shrek the Musical; a South Charleston Community Center 1 year family pass; and free tickets to the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena. In addition to Wall of Prizes items won by reading and attending programs, at SCPL all our readers are winners! If a young reader registered for SCPL?s program, s/he may pick up a free book to keep! The Youth Services team will be available for prize pick up and free book selection the week of July 29 to August 2 from 10 am to 6 pm each day. Also during the Prize Party, we set a new record for the biggest and loudest SCPL library cheer EVER! We are pretty sure people states away heard readers and families expressing excitement about reading and the library! The youth programs truly had another remarkable summer. Of the 726 young readers who chose to read with SCPL, there were 408 -- or 56.2% -- who completed the program, meaning each logged at least 5 books read. We are thrilled our readers officially logged a total of 21,370 books read in 10 weeks....WOW! Congratulations, readers and families! Keep reading and reaching for the stars! As we began to review program surveys, we discovered many readers wanted more time to read this summer and, of course, we listened! Here?s the scoop on SLP+ 2019! Pick up a green book log from Youth Services. Record the titles of books read now through September 3. Bring your logs to the library September 3 - 6 for a special surPRIZE! *Wall of Prizes Tickets are now on hiatus until summer 2020. *Book logs only accepted in Youth Services September 3 - 6 from 10 am to 6 pm daily. The Youth Services team cannot thank everyone enough for the support of our summer programs (and the work we do year round). Appreciation goes to: City of South Charleston leaders and officials including the Mayor, Frank Mullens, and members of City Council; the SC Fire Department and SC Police Department; community leaders and teens who volunteer time and talent; members of the SCPL Board of Directors; the many local businesses and individuals who donate to the program and participate in events; SCPL director, Todd Duncan, who unwaveringly supports our team as we make library magic; and of course, the many families and readers who allow us the privilege of serving your family. August brings a short programming hiatus for Youth Services as the community prepares for back-to-school, and members of our team take a much-needed breath to regroup and prepare for upcoming fall programs. Remember, we always have books and more available to borrow; see you soon at YOUR library!
