Nominations for Distinguished Alumni Award Due March 21
                       Atlantic Cape’s Alumni Association Advisory Committee is accepting
                       nominations for the President’s Distinguished Alumni Award. The award
                       recognizes Atlantic Cape graduates who have distinguished themselves through
                       professional, personal, public or community-based accomplishments.

                      This prestigious award demonstrates the college’s dedication to strengthening

The recipient will be announced and recognized at graduation, Thursday, May 22. Past award recipients

Last Chance for Gala, 50/50 Raffle Tickets
This is the last week to buy tickets to South Jersey’s premier fundraising
event. The Atlantic Cape Restaurant Gala’s 31st annual dining
extravaganza is planned for Thursday, March 13, at Bally’s Atlantic City
Hotel and Casino. With the theme “The Greatest Gala on Earth,” the 2014
Gala will feature a vintage carnival atmosphere and spectacular feast.

The annual event celebrates food with hors d’oeuvres prepared by students
at the Academy of Culinary Arts and the house specialties of 39 of the
area’s best restaurants at a progressive dining experience. An elegant
dessert reception will complete the evening’s festivities.

The Gala features several genres of live music, including Don’t Call Me Francis, The FM Band and
Lenny Mitchell. Performance ice sculptor Peter Slavin, an Academy of Culinary Arts graduate and owner
of Fear No Ice Philly, will take the stage during the cocktail reception.

‘See Yourself at Atlantic Cape;’ College to Host Open House April 6
The college will hold its spring 2014 College-wide Open House with the theme “See Yourself at Atlantic
Cape” on Sunday, April 6, from noon-3 p.m., at the Mays Landing Campus.

Admissions is taking a new approach for this open house, and will feature a welcome by Dr. Peter L.
Mora; academic presentations in the gym; information sessions running from 12:45-1:15 p.m., 1:30-2
p.m. and 2:15-2:45 p.m.; tours and giveaways for attendees to better experience our faculty and campus.

Please consider volunteering to provide an overview of your academic program or careers in your field.
Faculty support has always been strong for recruitment events, and we look forward to your participation
in the spring open house.

Prospective students will have the opportunity to meet college faculty and staff, apply for admission, tour

                       Athlete Named ‘Woman of the Year’
                       Volleyball and softball player Jessica Solorzano, a Pleasantville native and
                       graduate of the Atlantic County Institute of Technology, was named a Woman of
                       the Year by the New Jersey Association for Girls and Women in Sports.

                       Solorzano, 19, is an Academy of Culinary Arts student, and intends to pursue a
                       bachelor’s degree in hospitality management upon graduation. The sophomore
                       plays both volleyball and softball. She was an outfielder for the Bucs’ 2013
                       softball team, which recorded its most wins in its history. She was volleyball team
                       captain and outside hitter in fall 2013.

                       She was nominated by softball coach Sean Thomas, who praised her leadership
                       and volunteerism. She is active in volunteering, most recently at the Adopt-a-
                       School event in December for Charles Spragg Elementary School children.

                       Her other accolades include receiving Atlantic Cape’s first NJCAA All Academic

Team Award for the 2013 softball team and being named All-Academic Garden State Athletic Conference
and Academic All Region in volleyball in 2012 and for softball and volleyball in 2013.

“It’s remarkable how much Jess has accomplished athletically and academically at Atlantic Cape. For her
to play two sports so well and have so much success in the classroom is truly amazing,” said Mike
Rennick, assistant director of athletics.

Women of the Year recipients were honored at the annual New Jersey National Girls and Women in
Sports Day luncheon at Seton Hall University. Each year, the NAGWS presents the Woman of the Year
award to one exceptional athlete from each college and university in the state for their achievements in
athletics, academics and community service.

Nominations for Student L.E.A.D. Program Due March 21
The Leadership Education and Development Program needs faculty and staff to identify students they feel
have leadership potential and may be willing to participate in leadership activities throughout the 2014-
2015 academic year.

Once nominated, the students will receive an invitation to interview with the L.E.A.D. program selection
committee. Selected students will have the opportunity to participate in leadership training and represent
the college at various events throughout the year.

Committee members will look for the following eligibility requirements and qualities during the process:
Students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA; students must plan to return during the 2014-2015 academic
year; and students must display leadership roles in the classroom and/or on campus, show initiative, be a
team player, be open-minded, be responsible, show enthusiasm for helping others and demonstrate
effective interpersonal skills.

Speaker Addresses Business Attire, Etiquette to Students
                                  Dr. Alex Ellis, award-winning author, speaker, custom clothier, mentor and
                                  gentleman of distinction, presented the workshop “Image is Power: Go From
                                  Being Seen to Being Remembered™,” Feb. 20, at the Mays Landing Campus.

                                  Dr. Ellis has been featured on such programming as: CBS Radio, Fox, Steve
                                  Harvey Morning Show, CNN and Jet. Attendees were captivated by Dr. Ellis’
                                  engaging discussion on proper business attire, etiquette and keys to success. At
                                  the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Ellis helped several students learn how to
                                  properly tie a tie.

Sturdy Savings Bank Makes Donation for Scholarships
The Atlantic Cape Foundation accepted a $2,000 gift from Sturdy Savings
Bank recently. The donation is the final payment toward a $10,000 pledge for
the Create Opportunity Campaign that supports scholarships for low- to
moderate-income students.

“Atlantic Cape is grateful to Sturdy Savings Bank for their continued support
of our students. Sturdy Savings Bank’s donation to the Capital & Scholarship
Campaign is an investment that will create opportunity for many promising

Casino Career Institute Offers Gaming Training this Spring
The Casino Career Institute has prepared more than 50,000 people for rewarding careers in gaming and
continues to offer top-notch training for those who wish to enter the expanding casino profession.

                   If you are interested in a fast entry to a career in table games, CCI is offering quick-
                   start courses in Blackjack, Roulette or Baccarat. The four-week courses teach the
                   fundamentals and emphasize game knowledge, chip value and card handling. New
                   sections begin weekly, and online registration is available at www.atlantic.edu/cci.

                   Classes also begin monthly in a variety of table games, including: Blackjack, Craps,
                   Baccarat, Poker and Tournament Play, Pai Gow Tiles, Roulette, Pai Gow Poker and
                   Carnival Games.

Entertainment Dealer—Blackjack provides experienced Blackjack dealers with the skills to transition to
an entertainment dealer. Topics include game procedure, game protection, personal presentation and
customer service. Classes begin Tuesday, March 18.

Introduction to Electronic Table Games with i-Table Blackjack translates students’ traditional skills to the
new electronic environment, beginning Monday, April 14.

Introduction to Electronic Table Games with i-Table Roulette prepares current dealers to handle chips,
electronic chips and pay bets electronically, beginning Tuesday, May 6.

CCI table games alumni can revive their skills as they return to the gaming workforce with an Alumni
Refresher Program. Graduates may take the refresher program course only for the games they previously
have taken with CCI at 50 percent of the fee. Alumni who have graduated from CCI within the last three
years can refresh their skills with the Alumni Practice Program for a $15 annual fee.

Gaming classes begin regularly, allowing students the opportunity to jump-start their casino career or

Atlantic Cape Offers Free Courses for Businesses and Nonprofits
Atlantic Cape will offer free Microsoft Office (2010) and social media courses for all New Jersey
businesses and nonprofits at the Cape May County Campus in April and May. The free courses are made
possible through grant funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development in
partnership with the New Jersey Council of County Colleges.

Employees can also take Social Media Fundamentals on Friday, April 25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This class will
teach employees which social media tool is most important based on personal and professional goals.

The class Social Media and Marketing, Friday, May 2, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., will examine how social media
platforms impact business and investigate strategies to grow your client base.

Atlantic Cape to Host Poetry Reading April 16
In honor of National Poetry Month, the college will host poet BJ Ward for a reading at 7 p.m.,
Wednesday, April 16, in Cafeteria B at the Mays Landing Campus. The event is free.

                                    Ward grew up in New Jersey and earned a BA at Richard Stockton College
                                    of New Jersey and an MA at Syracuse University. He is the author of
                                    several collections of poetry, including Jackleg Opera: Collected Poems
                                    1990-2013, Gravedigger’s Birthday (2002), a Paterson Poetry Prize finalist;
                                    17 Love Poems With No Despair (1997); and Landing in New Jersey with
                                    Soft Hands (1994).

                              His poems have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio
 Poet BJ Ward                 program The Writer’s Almanac, and he has received fellowships from the
                              Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts,
and the Artist/Teacher Institute, as well as a Pushcart Prize. He has taught at the Frost Place Seminar for
Young Poets, the New Jersey Governor’s School for the Arts, and Warren County Community College.

Greetings from the Cape May County Campus

                                               CMCC students enjoyed the tribute performance for Black
                                               History Month, “Unlocking the Doors,” starring John Alvarez,
                                               adjunct instructor of theater, and students Anthony George and
                                               Brandon Sayers, and an educational speech from Helen
                                               McCaffrey, adjunct instructor, on George White. The play was
                                               organized and written by Tammy DeFranco, director, CMCC
                                               student services & campus management. About 80 students
                                               attended, as well as SGA Adviser Doug Mills and SGA leader
                                               Israel Negron. Thank you SGA, students and staff for your
                                               ongoing support in making these events successful.
 CMCC sparkles with a fresh blanket of snow.
                                          Newly installed on the back wall of the dining room is a flexible
system for displaying artwork. Cheryl Crews, adjunct instructor of art, designed the layout and specified
the needed hardware, which was quickly installed by the facilities team of Rob Townsend and Tim
Cliggett. The first exhibit will be provided by the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New
Jersey. Subsequent exhibits will feature student and faculty work or themed work for Women’s History
Month, Black History Month, Earth Day, AIDs awareness, and the like. Thank you, Cheryl, for designing
the system!

Middle Township High School seniors visited CMCC March 4 to take the Accuplacer and tour the
campus. Great job, Kathleen Denice and testing team!

Once again, student orators from Cape May County 4-H will utilize our classrooms during Spring Break.
The annual public presentations competition prepares local 4-H speakers for statewide competition later
in the year. The students and volunteer judges will be here March 17, 18 and 21, from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Looking to pamper yourself without spending a lot of cash? Our friends at the Cape May County
Technical School District have the answer! As the cosmetology students near completion of their
program, they open their salon to the public. Appointments for hair, skin and nail care are available in the
evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April, and prices are reasonable. The “Tech,”
as we call it, has always supported Atlantic Cape’s mission in Cape May County, housing many of our
classes for the decade leading up to the construction of CMCC. So, we like to return the favor. Phone

Beat the winter weather blues with this news!

Tutoring Update—Encourage students to seek assistance through tutoring. Math tutors assist students in
MATH 073 and 074. Writing tutors can help students with English, ESL, writing, reading and
conversation skills. Tutoring is “drop-in” during scheduled hours, but it is recommended students sign up
in advance to reserve a time. Sign-up sheets are located outside Room 142. Tutoring for upper level math
courses and other classes is by request and availability. Direct inquiries to Michael Sargente,

                                       WACC students enjoyed a fun-filled day with Black History Trivia
                                       recently. The Student Government Association sponsored the Black
                                       History Game Show with prizes. Students had an opportunity to answer
                                       questions over four rounds. The final four competed for the top prize.
                                       Additionally, on Feb. 25, students read essays on “My Dream for
                                       America.” The students represented English and DEVA 155 classes.
                                       There were 14 students from four different cultures that participated.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE
On Feb. 28, the Metropolitan Business and Citizens Association hosted an inaugural scholarship ball
honoring Mayor Don Guardian of Atlantic City. Dr. Mora and Sean Fischer, dean, resource
development/president & Board of Trustees operations, attended the event, where it was announced
$300,000 in proceeds from the event will be donated to the Atlantic Cape Foundation to support city
residents attending Atlantic Cape’s programs.

This donation marks the single largest donation from an event in college and Foundation history and will
make a significant impact in removing financial barriers to education for the residents of Atlantic City.

Submit Now: The NJEA Higher Education Conference will be held April 11-12. You will receive
information at your home mailing address from NJEA. If you wish to attend fill out the required form and
submit to your local officer. Do not send the form directly to NJEA. The local association will pick up the
cost of a reasonable number of members to attend, but members will be required to write a check for the
full cost of the conference. The check will be returned to you upon arrival at the conference. Watch your
mail and the CommuniCator for more information.
