WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings, and welcome to the ANÉA-ASNA 2020 Convention! This convention marks the 30th anniversary of the organization, and I would like to give special thanks to Dominic Déry and André Choquet, the founders of ANÉA-ASNA, for making all these wonders possible. Be sure to attend the ASNA Meet and Greet with ASNA Founders session, where you can meet and learn from these two wonderful pioneers! Angel Yang Following our vision from prior years, we have made President, Actuarial Students’ National great strides in expanding the overall year-round Association support for actuarial students these past 12 months. I am glad to announce that the University of Windsor and St. Francis Xavier University have both joined the ASNA family as our new member universities. We have also introduced a new position, Vice-President of East, to better serve the needs of students in the Atlantic provinces. This year, ASNA is also very honoured to be represented at the CIA and SOA annual meetings, to connect and expand our network. On top of that, we are very excited to announce the launch of the CIA-ASNA job portal, Actuarial Jobs, on which students can browse and apply for internship and full-time jobs. We thank the CIA very much for including us and giving students this amazing opportunity! Our continuing support for students also includes our nationwide Mentorship Program that connects over 100 students, monthly webinars that cover both basic ActSci 101 and more advanced technical topics, our Actex-ASNA joint scholarship, and informative newsletters. WORDS FROM THE CONVENTION CHAIR The ANÉA-ASNA Convention Committee is pleased to welcome you to the 2020 Convention – Three Decades of ASNA! In selecting this year’s theme for the convention, I wanted to focus on the past and the future of our organization, which has constantly grown and changed with the changing industry. For the past three decades, ANÉA-ASNA’s Annual Convention has been a platform for networking and knowledge for our actuarial community of academics, professionals and industry leaders. The world in which we live and work is evolving dramatically. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning are Nikhil Kakadiya Convention Chair, Actuarial Students’ creating products and services with the potential not National Association only to change the environment in which actuaries operate, but also to provide new opportunities within actuarial science. With longer lifespans and the rising prominence of cybersecurity, self-driving vehicles, and drone insurance, it is clear that the increasing importance of technology has affected how we insure. There has never been a better time to celebrate the past and what’s coming our way! I am honoured to present the Three Decades of ANÉA-ASNA. CONVENTION OVERVIEW The annual ANÉA-ASNA Convention is the largest gathering of actuarial students, industry professionals, and academics in Canada. Every year we aim to provide a platform for actuarial students to develop their knowledge of the industry and build their networks with professionals and peers alike. This year’s convention, “Three Decades of ASNA”, will focus on celebrating the past, the present and the future of ASNA and the industry. FRIDAY MEALS SOA Opening Ceremony Dinner Speaker: Jennifer Haid, Board Member, Society of Actuaries Jennifer Haid, FSA, CFA, is vice president Strategic Marketing and Product Development at American International Group (AIG) in New York City. She has spent time in New York at EY consulting to the insurance community and in Toronto at Willis Towers Watson consulting to large multi-nationals on issues related to their pension programs. She focuses on the measurement and management of retirement risks. Haid is a regular speaker and an author of several industry papers. She serves on the Society of Actuaries Board of Directors and acts as a leader and advocate for AIG’s efforts around Diversity & Inclusion. Haid can be reached at Jennifer.Haid@aig.com. SATURDAY MEALS CAS Luncheon Speaker: Steve Armstrong, President - Casualty Actuarial Society Steve Armstrong is a personal insurance expert with over 25 years of extensive experience in pricing, product design, underwriting, and regulatory work. Throughout this career, Steve has led teams of actuaries, predictive modelers, and product analysts; he has also served as an expert witness in several states. Steve began his career at Allstate Insurance Company, where he worked as an actuary overseeing actuarial and analytical talent for auto and homeowners insurance focusing on both the state-specific rate reviews and filings and the predictive modeling and countrywide rating plan development. During his tenure, Steve was responsible for introducing the product and rating algorithm for Drivewise, Allstate’s usage-based insurance endeavor before he left in 2012. Between 2012 and 2017, Steve worked for two large global insurance companies to help bring actuarial best practices to these companies and to other countries around the world. Steve recently returned to Allstate to oversee actuarial work and lead actuarial pricing strategy for private passenger automobile. Steve received his Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign in 1992 and his MBA from the University of Illinois – Chicago in 2003. Steve received his Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Fellowship in 1996; he served on the CAS Board of Directors from 2011- 2014 and as the CAS Vice President of Admissions from 2014-2017. CIA Gala Dinner Speaker: Michel St.Germain, President-Elect - Canadian Institute of Actuaries Michel St-Germain is the 2019–2020 President-Elect of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He will become CIA President in July 2020. For over 40 years, he has been a pension consultant with Mercer, holding the position of Partner for the past 20 years. Mr. St-Germain is a CIA gold award winner, in recognition of his extensive volunteer career with the Institute. His first assignment was in 1981 with the Program Committee. Since then he has held 29 other volunteer positions, including chairing the Member Services Council and the Pension Advisory Committee. He has served on the Practice Council, the Committee on Professional Conduct, and as a member of the CIA Board. Mr. St-Germain holds a bachelor’s degree in science from Université Laval.
