#DEVTRI2019 WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 Devonport Triathlon Welcome to the 2019 Devonport Triathlon, now in its 34th year. The prestigious race ranks among Australia’s oldest triathlons and continues to attract both high participation and spectator numbers. The event showcases elite triathletes from around the world and includes a Paratriathlon World Cup. This is one of six Paratriathlon World Cup events being held around the globe and the only one in Australia. The Devonport Triathlon is also a great opportunity to experience the unique North-West Coast of Tasmania. Home to fantastic produce, great food and wine, and some the state’s most spectacular nature based tourism experiences, I encourage athletes, supporters and friends to explore what the region has to offer. I wish all competitors the best of luck and encourage all Tasmanians to support and enjoy this fantastic summer event on the North-West Coast. Will Hodgman Premier of Tasmania Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Minister for Parks Minister for Heritage Minister for Trade PAGE 3
#DEVTRI2019 WELCOME It is my great pleasure to once again welcome you to Devonport for the opening event of the ITU Paratriathlon World Cup season, and the magnificent island of Tasmania. The Devonport Triathlon history reaches all the way back to 1985, and over the past 34 years it has truly established a world-class reputation and cemented its place as one of Australia’s very best triathlon racing experiences. Last year, the hugely experienced Bill Chaffey and Sally Pillbeam were among those athletes conquering popular gold medals, and the 2019 course will once again have the famous Mersey Bluff Lighthouse as its backdrop. The athletes starting with a 750m swim off the north coast of the island, before transitioning to the 6-lap, 20km bike course along the coastline before finishing with two laps of a flat and fast 2.5km at the mouth of the Mersey River. As well as the prestigious World Cup races, the weekend will again be packed with extra events for local residents to get involved in the action, including the popular Trikids race and Community Triathlons for individuals and teams, truly making this an occasion for the entire community to enjoy. Devonport has provided us with years of thrilling action and we are looking forward to an excellent few days of family-friendly activities that will bring more people to our sport as well as providing plenty of first-class racing for them to watch. My thanks to Triathlon Australia and the Local Organising Committee for putting together another wonderful occasion with which to begin the 2019 Paratriathlon World Cup calendar. May you all have another memorable weekend of ITU racing. Sincerely, Marisol Casado President, International Triathlon Union PAGE 4
#DEVTRI2019 WELCOME On behalf of Triathlon Australia, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Tasmania, as we host the opening round of the ITU Paratriathlon World Cup season in Devonport. Devonport has a long and rich history in the Australian triathlon landscape, the local community supporting triathlon for the past 35 years. We are equally as passionate about supporting iconic events and helping to build on their existing ‘investment. 2019 is the second year Devonport has held the Paratriathlon event and we are working collaboratively with the local organizing committee towards its inclusion on the ITU Paratriathlon World Series calendar in 2020. Devonport presents our paratriathletes a home advantage as they start the journey in accumulating valuable points towards Tokyo 2020. The weekend includes a whole lot more with the Oceania Championship, Mixed Relay Championship, Youth and Junior National Championship, which means the fields will attract our very best Australian athletes and New Zealanders. The racing will be fast with so many focused not just on titles but all valuable points towards Tokyo. The weekend is also packed with events for the local community to take part in, making this one of our key events this summer. I would like to thank the local organizing committee, in particular Michael Bonney for his continued support and passion for driving triathlon in Tasmania and I’m very much looking forward to being part of the weekend. Miles Stewart CEO, Triathlon Australia PAGE 5
