The ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is designed specifically to assess a student’s preparedness entering the health science fields. This is part of the basic requirements for nursing school and correlates with a consistent link between a student’s performance on the TEAS and future academic success. The ATI TEAS test is comprised of 170 questions, 20 of which are unsecured pretest items. Questions are designed to test the basic academic skills you will need to perform in class in the areas of: Reading, Math, Science, and English and Language Usage. Go to atitesting.com and create a user account. Log-into atitesting.com using your ATI username and password and select “Register for the TEAS” through BCC. Select the ADN test. Once you register and pay the testing fees a confirmation email will be sent to you from ATI. Cost of the exam is @ $77.00 (subject to change by ATI). Various test preparation materials can be purchased through the atitesting.com site. This test can only be taken once every three-month period. 6. You must have completed a state approved Nursing Aide (NA) training program, OR have an active license as a Practical Nurse in North Carolina. (Information on NC state-approved programs can be found at http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dhsr/hcpr/nat.html.) a. LPNs from both in-state and out-of-state programs must provide evidence that they have an active unrestricted license as an LPN in the State of North Carolina, prior to the application deadline. b. CNAs from both in-state and out-of-state programs must have completed a NC state approved NA I course and become certified through the State of North Carolina, to be entered on the North Carolina CNA registry, prior to the application deadline. Candidate must have an unrestricted license as a CNA. Candidates are encouraged to be actively working in a health care facility as a licensed CNA. 1) A copy of a high school or college transcript or a course completion certificate from the state approved NA I program must be submitted with application (including courses taken at BCC). Failure to produce completion certificate will result in zero points for this criteria. Failure to be listed on the registry, or a substantiated or restricted finding, will disqualify an applicant from admission to the program, and that seat will be awarded to an applicant on the wait list. Verification and licensure must be maintained until the start of the program. 7. Applicants whose native language is not English, and who did not graduate from a high school or college in the United States, will be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT). To be considered for admission applicants must meet the following scoring criteria: Total score: 83, with a minimum speaking score of 26, reading score of 15, listening score of 15, and writing score of 20. Please note: All questions related to the admission process and testing should be directed to Samantha Walker at the number on the front of this brochure. 4
C. Application Process The application and all supporting documents must be received in Student Services by 3 PM on January 31, 2020. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all documents required for admission are received in Student Services by the established deadline. Important – any applications received after the application deadline will not be accepted and eligibility to be considered for admission will be forfeited. The process is as follows (check when completed): 1. Complete the College application and be accepted as a student at Brunswick Community College. Please see the BCC Catalog for a complete list of requirements and deadlines for admission to the College. These requirements must be followed. Please remember that this is a separate process from applying to the ADN program. For applicants who applied earlier to the College but did not register for classes at BCC, all educational credentials are kept for one academic year. After this time, all credentials are securely destroyed and must be resubmitted with a new "Application for Enrollment" (i.e., a fall applicant's credentials will be destroyed at the conclusion of the following fall semester if not registered for classes.) Please contact Samantha Walker (number listed on the front page of this document) should you have questions regarding documents submitted previously. 2. Submit official high school or GED transcript. If you graduated from a NC Public high school since 2003, you may request your official high school transcript be sent electronically to the Admissions Office via the College Foundation of NC (CFNC) website at www.cfnc.org. 3. Submit official college transcript(s) for credits earned from all colleges attended. 4. Complete the Associate Degree Nursing Program Application between December 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020. Application must be submitted electronically to Student Services, along with all required documentation (see B, 1-6). Application will be available on the BCC webpage on December 1, 2019. (a) DO NOT submit personal recommendations; they will not be considered and will be destroyed. 5
D. Nursing Candidate Selection Process The ADN program understands and accepts the concept of the open-door policy for general admission to BCC. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to the ADN program. Faculty reserve the right to consider admission on an individual basis. The number of accepted candidates is determined annually by the faculty of the ADN program. Usually that number is 25 - 30. An additional 5 - 10 qualified applicants may be selected for the wait list. These applicants will be notified of their wait status only, and not their numbered placement. The wait list is maintained only until classes begin. It is not carried over to the next year. Candidates will be awarded points as follows: Percentile rank composite scores from the NLN PAX-RN examination will be awarded points as follows: 60-69 percentile = 5 points 70-79 percentile = 10 points 80-89 percentile = 15 points 90-99 percentile = 20 points Completion of high school biology or chemistry with a grade of “C” or better will be awarded points based upon the grade received for each (A=3, B=2, C=1). The BIO 168, BIO 169, BIO 275, CHM 151must be taken within the past 5 years. Any grades for these courses older than 5 years will not be accepted. Completion of any math course with a grade of “C” or higher will be assigned points based upon the highest grade received for each course (A=3, B=2, C=1). Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university as follows: Associate Degree = 5 points Bachelor’s Degree = 6 points Master’s Degree = 7 points In the event of a tie, preference will be given to the applicant(s) with the highest overall GPA on the most recent academic record (college or high school), an evaluation of all transcripts, and the NLN PAX-RN scores weighted in the sciences (percentile composite, followed by individual scores). E. Notification Procedure Candidates are selected for conditional acceptance into the ADN program. An acceptance packet will be mailed (through US Postal Service) to each candidate who is accepted. Full acceptance is contingent upon maintaining eligibility standards, i.e. GPA, grades, CNA or LPN etc., and satisfactory completion of all additional requirements by deadlines to be determined by the ADN Department, prior to the start of the academic year in 2020. 6
The acceptance packet will contain additional student requirements (i.e. physical examination, immunizations, CPR, orientation, etc.), with deadline dates for compliance. The preferred communication method is BCC email once issued. It is the responsibility of candidates to update both email and home addresses in Student Services and the ADN department. BCC email is assigned once you have been admitted to the College. Failure to meet established deadlines may result in disqualification. Pre-Entrance Examination Registration Instructions NLN PAX-RN scores are good for 3-years. A 3-month waiting period is required before the exam may be re-taken. Students are responsible for contacting the NLN to have scores greater than 3 years old sent to BCC, or if the student has taken the exam more than once to identify which score to have sent. The NLN will send the latest scores unless instructed otherwise. If exam is taken at a location other than BCC, it is the student’s responsibility to have official scores sent to BCC. Scores are only sent to the institution where tested unless the NLN is notified to send elsewhere. Students who have difficulty registering, or once registered are unable to re-access your information, may contact the NLN at 1-800-732-8656. Neither Student Services nor the Nursing Department will be able to access this information for you. It is strongly recommended that students prepare for the examination. A study guide is on reserve in the BCC library. The guide may also be purchased at the BCC bookstore, or online at http://www.jblearning.com/catalog/9780763762711/ or at other national book 7

This document is posted on the BCC Nursing & Allied Health and Associate Degree Nursing website. Clinical affiliating agencies utilized by the ADN Nursing Program, require students to submit to criminal background checks and drug testing at the student’s expense prior to and during participation in the clinical facilities. Students may be dismissed from the program, prior to starting the program or during the 2 years of the program, if the student does not meet agency requirements for student placement. This will be further discussed during the ADN orientation day. Students with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) special testing accommodations must contact the BCC ADA office, prior to starting the program, to arrange for testing accommodations. Successful applicants will be required to attend a mandatory orientation session to the nursing program at a date to be announced. At that time additional information will be provided and questions answered. 8

“Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body…” Florence Nightingale 11
