@ashfordtownmx From the Dugout with Luke Tuffs Good aernoon and welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Whitstable Town FC. It’s been a great week for us as a club with victories over South Park and Northwood in the league leaving us 3 games unbeaten with 7 points in 9. I for one am loving the buzz about the place at the moment and the genuine excitement to see where we can go together as a collecve. However context is everything, and context is however great the feeling and some of the performances, our three wins have come against 3 sides that currently reside in the boom half of the table. A great start, but a start playing sides currently in the lower reaches none the less. Our target as a collecve cannot and will not change. Our challenge is to be compeve in every fixture we play. Every game so far, win draw or lose, could have gone either way. Whether it be a Chertsey, Bracknell or an FA Trophy match, or we are playing a side in the lower reaches, we want to be compeve from the 1st to the 90th or 93rd minute or whenever the ref blows his whistle. That we have certainly been this year. A somewhat off colour performance against South Park was followed by a sterling performance against Northwood. South Park, similar to Uxbridge, appeared to cheat their wide players on and almost again looked a 4-2-4 at mes. Their number 10 kept dropping Into the hole which le us with a conundrum. Leave him and let him face us up and slide balls through us, or go with and end up a 3 v 3 behind in a big vacuum. For this reason, aer we gained the lead, we changed to a 4-1-4-1 and asked French to sit in the back 4. This allowed him to deal with the 10 when he came in and leave us with 1 spare man defensively again. We dropped deeper to make it easier for us to stay compact, and got Kane to run beyond Dan Brown into the space le - which he did so, so well and to be honest you couldn’t fault any of the boys in the last 30. Against Northwood, we faced a completely different prospect. A Northwood side that loved playing football, but to the extent it seemed like they were playing futsal for many parts of the game. You could see they had been coached well, have good players and broke our press a few mes, but their striker was isolated and the way they played meant there was rarely a threat behind, only in front so to speak. 8 #ASHWHI
ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com Duffys screamer (Albeit deflected) free kick was deserved in my opinion, and we went in good value for a 1-0 lead. The second half Northwood became abit more direct, whilst we sank in and let them have the ball up to a certain engagement line. Even then, they kept playing inside so we encouraged the boys to over exaggerate the line which they did. Northwood kept trying to play inside sll and with that, we would nick it, counter, and then watch with disbelief at some of the incredible football the boys displayed for us. I don’t think anybody could have argued if we got 3, but it shows the fine margins in football, as in the 83rd minute a fantasc Macca penalty save spared us a last 10 minutes of going grey. Eventually the final whistle went, and brought down the curtains on another excellent 3 points. Today will be a very different proposion. Whitstable have started well and they too find themselves in the top 6 of their respecve league early doors. They will pose us different problems to we have faced over the last few weeks, so we will have to be at our best. Get behind the team as I know you will and let’s see where it takes us! A couple more things from me - can everyone please please ‘like’ the Ashford Town Middlesex FC page. It takes 10 seconds but would be a huge help. We are trying to court new sponsors and have an online drive for new supporters so the more that follow the beer the appeal. If any of you own a business or work for a local company that would be interested in buying a board at the club, please shout me or Paul Gully. We are on abit of a binge at the moment and all the money goes to improving the club for everyone, Mens, Youth, Womens & juniors alike. Lastly from me, thank you so much to everyone for your amazing support. Going round the M25 to Waord on a Tuesday night and seeing we have packed out the width of a pitch with support is an incredible effort - so thank you so much from me, the staff and the boys. Enjoy the game, and I’ll see you in the bar aer for a beer or two. Tuffs X 9 #ASHWHI

@ashfordtownmx The Matchday Preview with Alan Constable Aer playing some highly familiar opponents recently, Ashford find themselves playing a new club today, in the shape of Whitstable Town, from Kent, in this the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy, a compeon that has given us a number of memorable matches over the years. We very much welcome our visitors to the Robert Parker Stadium. Both of us are members of the Isthmian League, albeit in different divisions, our opponents being in the South Eastern secon. At this moment they are in 5th place having won three and lost three of their opening league matches. A number of other clubs have matches in hand on them and league posions make lile difference at this early stage but their results have been a lile up and down by the look of it, the latest result being a 0-6 home defeat against Hythe Town on Tuesday evening, a result that has dented their goal difference considerably with nine goals scored and fieen conceded in the six league games played to date. Maybe that was something of a freak result on the night as before that, they won three league matches in a row, all against Sussex clubs, although they did also suffer a fairly heavy defeat, 1-5, to Premier Division Carshalton in the FA Cup. This is their first match in this season’s FA Trophy, having received a bye in the opening round when we were playing Hullbridge. Their best season in the compeon was in 2013-2014 when they baled through five rounds before going out narrowly in the 2nd Round Proper at home to Ebbsfleet United. I’m sure everyone’s sick of hearing it now but please remember that it’s table service only at the bar and we must have everyone sing down please and properly spaced out around the pitch. The Tangerines will come into the match in good spirits aer efficient performances both last Saturday against South Park and at Northwood on Tuesday. Today’s match will be tough as all of them are but it is always good when confidence is high. From the supporters present on Tuesday the general view was that Sam Humphries, scorer of our second goal, should take the Hitchcock & King “man of the match” credits but in truth it could have been just about anyone, including Paul McCarthy, with yet another penalty save aer a dodgy handball decision against Daryl Harrison. Following this aernoon’s match, we are not back in acon unl next Saturday when we return to league acon and travel to Harlow, kick-off 3.00 p.m. 14 #ASHWHI

@ashfordtownmx Today’s Opponents Whitstable Town Club History Whitstable Town F.C. is a football club based in Whitstable, Kent, England. The club was established in 1885 and joined the Kent League in 1909 where they remained for many years, apart from a couple of short spells elsewhere. In the 1996/97 season, the team reached the 5th round of the FA Vase. They were champions of the Kent League Premier Division in the 2006/07 season and were promoted to the Isthmian League. Aer nine seasons they suffered relegaon and played in the Southern Counes East League Premier Division for the next two, but in 2017/18 they won both the Kent Senior Trophy and League Cup, whilst also finishing runners-up in the league, which was enough to gain promoon back to the Isthmian League, where they are currently members of the South East Division. Although the first recorded football match in Whitstable was in 1885, the first record of Whitstable Town's existence was the following year. Aer a couple of years playing in a field behind the railway staon, the club relocated to The Belmont Ground in 1888, where they play to this day. In 1909 the Oystermen joined the original Kent League, where they played unl it folded in 1959, winning the Division Two tle three mes. They also lied the Kent Amateur Cup (now Kent Senior Trophy) in 1929. Aer the collapse of the Kent League, the club played for a while in the Aetolian League, but this meant long trips to play London teams as opposed to the earlier money-spinning East Kent derbies, and this was a period of financial struggle for the club, which dropped into the amateur leagues for a number of years. In the late 1960s the Kent League reformed, with the Oystermen among the founder members, moving back from the Greater London League. They also aracted naonal publicity in 1989 when striker Gerry Allen scored a goal aer just 4 seconds of a match. They had remained members of the Kent League unl their promoon to the Isthmian League in 2007. The 2006–07 season marked the best in the club’s history when supporter Tony Rouse took over as chairman from long me servant of the club Joe Browne. Rouse appointed first team captain Marc Seager as the club’s manager taking over from Ma Toms. Under Marc Seager’s leadership the team won the Kent League and the Kent Senior Trophy. In 2012 former local referee Gary Johnson took over as chairman from Joe Browne (aer his second 16 #ASHWHI
ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com spell in the chair) who stepped down aer many years at Whitstable Town. The club’s best finish in the Isthmian League was 8th under managers Jim and Danny Ward in 2014/15, while Nicky Southall led them to the last 32 of the FA Trophy in 2013/14, before losing 2-1 to Ebbsfleet United in front of 742 supporters at the Belmont Ground. Towards the end of a turbulent 2015/16 season that saw the chairman resign and the club relegated, Joe Browne returned as chairman and Sco Porter took over as Manager for the last few games in the Isthmian League before relegaon was confirmed. The club rebuilt off the pitch and aer two seasons in the Southern Counes East League, promoon back into the Isthmian League was achieved with a second placed finish during a season that also brought cup final wins in the Kent Senior Trophy and the SCEFL Challenge Cup. The club launched a football academy at the start of the 2017/18 season and then joined together with Whitstable Town Junior Football Club on 1st June 2019, when the club ownership was also transferred to a new limited company. With chairman Joe Browne and manager Sco Porter both deciding to stand down to take up alternave roles within the club, the 2019-20 season heralded a fresh start for Whitstable Town. The junior club chairman Steve Clayton took up the posion of overall club chairman and Lloyd Blackman became the new first team manager. There are now opportunies for girls and boys under the age of 18 to train, play football and be part of the town’s senior club and with a thriving academy and new reserves team, there is a clear pathway to senior football in the town. Whitstable Town play their home games at The ‘Belmont Ground’, Belmont Road, Whitstable, Kent. There is a good sized car park available, but please note its entrance is on Grimshill Road, CT5 4LN. The ground boasts a newly seated stand along one side as well as covered terracing behind each goal. There is a clubhouse and bar that can be hired for private funcons, when in use for matches. 17 #ASHWHI

Women @ashfordtownmx AT FC ashfordtownmiddlxlfc.com Ashford Town (Middx) FC Women v Kent football utd LSERWFL: Aylesford 3-8 Ashford Town (Middx) Tangerines Game Day 2 The Tangerines opened proceedings when Johnson combined smartly with Neufville on the edge of the eighteen-yard box, before Johnson finished low into the boom corner, out of the goalkeepers Vitality Women’s FA CUP reach (15’). Anya Kinnane missed a glorious chance from a corner just before pung things right by 2nd Qualifying Round nodding in Down’s delivery shortly aer (18’). Kinnane was in the thick of the acon again when she picked out Down, who recorded her second assist of the game by slong the ball into Cheatley’s path, the forward increased the travelling teams’ margin (38’). Aylesford came out in the second half determined to overturn the three-goal deficit and soon found themselves in behind the Ashford defence, a misjudged clearance then led to a tap in for the home side. The three-goal margin was then restored when the pick of Sunday’s goals was scored. Neufville who started the move finished it off in fine fashion calmly slong the ball into the boom corner (49’). Aylesford scored again aer another defensive error, but Nebbi came on to score her first goal for The Tangerines aer brilliant 18TH October 2020 movement to lose her defender and finish off Down’s cross (58’). Cheatley recorded her second of the game (65’), before Kinnane also doubled her tally (70’). Aylesford did not give up and connued to push for a goal, they got their just rewards when a deflected shot in the box looped over Perkis’ reach before Neufville (80’) got her second with ten minutes sll to play. The forward chased down a back-pass to the goalkeeper and tapped in to a vacant net. 34 #ASHWHI

@ashfordtownmx By David Richardson The internaonal break very rarely affects Non-League clubs, but Non-League is increasingly influencing the internaonal scene. Each season we see more players deservedly earn moves into the Football League – and some even go on to reach the absolute peak. Over the last seven months the football pyramid has become even more divided, with ‘Project Big Picture’ now trying hard to increase the gap, but the importance of lower-league clubs to the product on the pitch has never been more obvious. Six players in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad have had snts in Non-League and there were five in the side Ryan Giggs picked for Wales when the two teams met last week. Nick Pope started the friendly fixture at Wembley having begun his career in the Eastern Counes League with Team Bury before progressing to Bury Town in the Isthmian League. Following his move to Charlton Athlec, Pope went on loan to Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United and Aldershot Town for more crucial experience of first team football. The back-up England keepers against Wales, Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, are also no strangers to Non-League. Pickford had loan spells at Darlington and Alfreton Town while Henderson played in goal for Stockport County just over four years ago when they were in Naonal League North. He’s also pushing to become Manchester United’s number one. Centre-back Tyrone Mings impressed in senior football at Yate Town and Chippenham Town in the Southern League before a successful trial at Ipswich Town forged the start of his top-flight career. Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his England debut, and scored, in the 3-0 win over Wales. A debut goal was nothing new to the Everton striker, as a 17-year-old he bagged on his first appearance for Stalybridge Celc against Hyde on Boxing Day when Sheffield United sent him out for game me. On New Year’s Day, in the reverse fixture, he scored twice and set up three. Danny Ings also got in on the act at Wembley, scoring his first goal for his country via a bicycle kick. Ten years ago, he was neng in Non-League at Dorchester Town on loan from Bournemouth. Many others in the England squad either started or showed their talents in the lower reaches of the Football League before stepping up into the Premier League spotlight. Non-League football and its clubs play a vital role in developing players just as much as the top- flight academies – every player has a different path and their roots should not be forgoen. 36 #ASHWHI
