Gav Cross Twisted Tales for Terrible Children Scratch the surface of all the tales we have heard since childhood and we find they are dark, nasty and full of dubious intention. A slight twist reveals the terrible, the silly and the downright incredible ’truths’ hidden in plain sight. Gav Cross (Storyteller, Show-Off and Chief Idiocy Wrangler for Funny Looking Kids: Comedy Club) brings these old fables to life again vividly. Elysium Theatre Hello & Goodbye Port Elizabeth, the 1960s: brother and sister Johnnie and Hester Smits have not seen each other in years. Hester left for good when she was a teenager, Johnnie stayed to look after their invalid father. When Hester returns to claim the birthright she believes is hers, the stage is set for a moving, poetic, punchy drama of sibling rivalry, family and the debts we owe each other, financial and otherwise. UTASS, Middleton in Teesdale Sat 6 Nov 7pm 01833 640685 Melmerby Village Hall Sun 7 Nov 7.30pm 01768 881498 Multi Story Hefted Hefted is a play by David Lane, embedded in the landscape, history and psyche of rural life. Sweeping across 600 years, the story begins in 1475 with a supernatural birth before moving through nine different scenarios to an imagined 2075, in which stories from the past are retold to heal the present. Some stories are fantastical, others dramatise real events: all explore the notion of being ‘hefted’ – deeply connected to the land. Presented by four actors who conjure a score of characters between them and interspersed with song and a spectacular soundscape, Hefted opens the door for the stories of rural communities to be shared. Kate Fox Bigger on the Inside Poet and comedian Kate Fox once thought receiving a positive diagnosis for autism had as much a chance of happening as a female Doctor Who. As such, since the Doctor’s 13th incarnation (played by Jodie Whittaker) in 2018, Fox’s life has changed quite a bit. Blending stand-up and spoken word with personal memoir and her warm performance style, Kate looks at neurodiversity through the theme of Doctor Who. Taking us through the ways the iconic sci-fi show has shaped her view of the world, she shines a light on how our ideas of normality need an update and how we are all Bigger on the Inside. Kate is a stand-up poet and broadcaster, a regular voice on Radio 4 and a ‘gentle activist’ for the voices of Northerners, the working class, women and the neurodiverse.
