Ashford Castle LHWAUTO.COM Test drive 1 TEST ROUTE I Depart Ashford Castle for the wonderful ring of Connemara , driving through the famous village of Cong, known for featuring in the award winning film the Quiet Man. The into Cornamona featuring spectacular viewing points over-looking lake Lough Corrib and then on into Leenane in Joyce Country. Leenane was the location where the Hollywood film "The Field" was filmed in 1990. Continue over the mountains to take in Kylemore Abbey and Letterfrack; this is the home of Connemara National Park and the Twelve Pins mountain. This is a challenging and windy route and you will proceed driving in the the lovely seaside village of Clifden where you can stop off at the seafood specialty restaurant called Mitchell's. Alternatively, you could visit Station House which was the original train station house in Clifden and converted into a hotel for a coffee stop. On your return journey to the hotel, you'll drive through beautiful valleys passing the Ballynahinch Lake and Derryclare Lake to Recess which is an area of bog land and is dominated by the quartzite peaks of the Twelve Pins home to the famous Connemara Green marble. Your journey will continue through Maam Cross and Maam back along the coast line of Lough Corrib returning to the village of Clonbur and Cong and your original start off point Ashford Castle. Total distance : 140 km SUGGESTIONS: Mitchell's a seafood specialty restaurant in the village of Clifden or the Station House which use to be the original trainstation of Clifden Test drive 2 TEST ROUTE II Depart Ashford Castle driving through the famous village of Cong, known for featuring in the award winning film the Quiet Man and into the quaint village of Clonbur and take the Lough Mask drive. Depending on the time of year, the Fuchsias can be most spectacular. The huge Lough Mask is a formidable place, with huge limestone rocks hidden just beneath its surface along with Brown Trout. Tourmakeady and its wooleen factory are next on the route before you come to Westport. Leave Westport by the harbor road and head towards Louisburgh passing Westport bay, the village of Murrisk and the Holy mountain "Croagh Patrick"; St Patrick is said to have banished all the serpents from Ireland. Louisburgh hosts the Grace O'Malley heritage Centre and the Famine Centre. Continue through the valleys of the Mweelrea Mountains and along the coast line, the only Fjord in Ireland, and into Leenane which featured in the film " The Field" and drive back along the shoreline of Lough Corrib into Cong and Ashford Castle. Ashford Castle LHWAUTO.COM Test drive 3 TEST ROUTE III Depart Ashford Castle and the village of Cong for Glaway City passing through the village of Cross and onto Glencorrib and into the village of Headford which is an angling centre and where you will find the ruins of Ross Errilly Abbey. Leave Galway by the N59 for Moycullen village continuing into the busy market town of Oughterard, one of Lough Corri's main angling town's. Leaving Oughterard behind, drive westwards to wards Maam Cross, the famous central Connemara market cross roads, turn left and as you drive the landscape dramatically changes. Greenery gives way to mountains, moorlands and lakes. At Maam Bridge, turn right driving along the rugged shoreline of Lough Corrib. Continue into the village of Cornamona taking in the beautiful views reaching the village of Clonbur and then onto Cong famous for the "Quiet Man" film and returning back to Ashford Castle. Total distance : 122 km SUGGESTIONS: Galway City is your next stop for a light refreshment, Galway is a vibrant medieval city and steeped in history.
