. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Regular Programs Cont. Turn the Page Book Club – Submitted by Pat & Alexander Miller "In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in "Seabiscuit". Telling an unforgettable story of a man's journey into extremity. "Unbroken" is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard to join his surviving crew friends. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War. The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he'd been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he channelled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. When World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft with his two friends. Ahead of them lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater as a POW. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humour; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. This was a difficult book to read but well written, it is a true story. The author was at great pains to get the facts correct and did a vast amount of research. The reviews were mixed but largely in awe of human endurance. Some of us were unable to finish the book due to vivid memories, others it took a while to read. The ratings were mixed some gave it a really high rating, others not so much. Overall it was 8 out of 10. Second Book Club – Submitted by Pauline Rice Our book selection in February was “Water for Elephants”. Every month we all read the same book of the month from the library and then discuss it at the following month’s meeting. The books all take us out of our normal comfort reading zone and we have all discovered delightful books that we would never have read were it not for the book club. We have lively discussions which are very enjoyable even if that particular book was not our favorite. If you love to read, we invite you to join our group. New members and guests are always welcome. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 am in the Hemlock Room at Echo Centre. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Regular Programs Cont. Pottery - The Wonders of Slip? – Submitted by Alanna Miller We have been exploring the many uses of slips with the guidance of our amazing mentor Elspeth Watson. Slips are basically coloured clay used to decorate your creations. She systematically guided us through the process of understanding the recipe, the ingredients, weighing and measuring, mixing and then using the slips on our own damp pieces. Each week she showed us another decorating technique from applying even strips of colour to layering colours and scraping through them to produce some spectacular designs. The satisfaction of being part of the whole process was such a treat, particularly for our newer members, of which we have had quite a few this year. If you were at the craft fair in March you might have seen some of the earlier fruits of our labour. If you haven't yet visited the pottery room be sure to come by and chat with us any Tuesday or Friday between 10:00 am – 4:00 pm in Pottery Craftroom B. We'll look forward to welcoming you! Last Day of the Season for Light Lunch Service – April 18 The last day for the light lunch service will be Thursday, April 18. Thank you to all the members who come for lunch or coffee and enjoy the services that our volunteers offer. A huge thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who help to make the lunch service a possibility. It takes a lot of volunteers working together to make this program a success. Thank you to our activity director Kathy Berard for joining our team this year and being such an incredible addition to our group. We are so grateful for your leadership and we would like to thank you for all your hard work and efforts! We would also like to thank the purchasers, muffin makers and kitchen volunteers. Together, you make it happen!! Thank you so much for your time, energy and dedication. After April 18, our volunteers are going to take some well-deserved time off, so enjoy the summer break and we hope to see everyone back again in the Fall. Woodworking Shop Update – Submitted by Ron Rutter During the recent Craft and Bake Sale, the wooden jar openers were a popular item. There was a lot of interest and several sold. These openers can be used free hand or mounted under a cabinet. There are more available and are being sold for $10 each. If you are interested in purchasing a jar opener, please contact Joe Kozsan at 250 724-1909 The woodworking group is looking for new members and volunteers to participate in the shop. Don’t let that stop you. Come out to the shop and start learning. There are always volunteers there willing to help you get started. If you are interested, drop by our shop any time to check it out. Volunteer Corner______________________________ Reminder to Volunteers It is very important that we maintain our volunteer records accurately. Our volunteers are such an important part of the Club and we want to ensure they receive the recognition they deserve. Directors are responsible for providing information as to who their volunteers are in their activity and of any changes that occur throughout the year. It is very challenging to keep updated information on all of our volunteers. Please ensure you inform the Sunshine Club office or Shirley Shanks at 250 724-0666 of any volunteer changes (retirements, additions, position changes etc) as they occur. We want to ensure our volunteers are being recognized for their contributions. All volunteers should have filled out a blue “volunteer form” from the Sunshine Club office. If you are a volunteer and haven’t done this, please complete the form and return it to the office. Thank you for your help with this. The world brings ups a lot of questions and emotions for all of us. We know it effects the brain, but what does that mean? If I have noticed changes in myself or someone else, are these changes normal? Not normal? During this session, you will learn how the brain changes and care partners will get a deeper understanding of the physical reality and perspective for a person living with this disease. Through this understanding, we will learn and use different approaches to maintain or regain the connections and relationships that are so important to all those involved. Join Dianne McCombie as she shares her passion to enhance life and relationships with those living with brain change. Diane has been a licensed practical nurse for twelve years and through her interest in dementia care, she is educating the community about the Positive Approach® methodology, created and taught by Teepa Snow. She has completed both her independent and coach certificates and is excited to share this important knowledge with others. In this two hour session, participants will learn about the affect dementia has on the brain and gain a better appreciation of the impacts of this disease because… until there’s a cure, there’s care! For more information on Diane, please visit her website at http://walkingwithdementia.com. If you are interested, please register at the Echo Centre or phone 250 723-2181. Parkinson’s Support Group – Submitted by Linda Nicklin Parkinson’s Disease affects people from all walks of life, including those in the limelight: Aldan Alda, Michael J. Fox, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt and Muhammad Ali to mention a few. So, keep moving, that is the key to Parkinson’s - “Move It or Lose It”! And another key factor is to get on the proper medications as soon as possible to slow the progress. Everyone with PD handles it differently. Don’t let it get in the way of living. Life is too good. Remember, keep going – the sky is the limit. Maintain a positive attitude, saying that although you have Parkinson’s –“ Parkinson’s doesn’t have me”. The next Parkinson’s Support Group meeting is Monday April 1 10:30 am at Smitty’s Restaurant. Join us for coffee. You are welcome to bring a friend. Alberni District Historical Society – Submitted by Judy Carlson The next meeting of the Alberni District Historical Society will be in the AV Museum, on Thursday, April 18, at 7:00 pm. It will feature a retrospective on one of the Canadian immigrant groups that make up our mosaic of peoples. Punjabi people have been in the Alberni Valley for more than 100 years. The Canadian Census and Leonard Frank photos show early workers living and working on the railway, in the forests, and in the lumber mills. The first families were established in the 1940s. Most of the Punjabi Canadian children, born in the 1940s and 50s, left the lumbering industry and went on to further their studies and find employment elsewhere. While many left the Valley, some stayed here, raising the next generation of Punjabi Canadians. We are grateful to Leslie Wright for her research and for her presentation. She will follow the Chand and Sall families from their arrival in Port Alberni to the present day, with photos and first-hand accounts to bring this part of our history to life. Special guests: Sebo Chand and Margaret Loyd, who is the daughter Shamir Singh. - 12 -
