Athletics Department Vision Statement The Auburn Athletics Department will be the nation’s preeminent Athletics Department. We have a two-fold purpose: to enable our student-athletes to be successful in all areas of their lives, athletics, academ- ics, and personal endeavors, both now and in their future careers, by providing them with the best resources available in academics, facilities, and coaching: and while meeting the needs of our student-athletes, to represent and promote Auburn University in a positive manner in all that we do. The Auburn Athletics Department’s Absolute Values are to always tell the truth and to treat others as we would like to be treated. We will also adhere to the timeless values of the Auburn Creed. We will lead the way in integrity, diversity, compliance, customer service, and communications, both internally and externally. We will function as a team, helping each other to be successful. We will work for the benefit of others and for Auburn, not for personal gain. We will have an attitude of constructive discontent; always striving to be better. Student-Athlete Support Services Mission Statement It is the vision of Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) of the Auburn University Athletics Department to promote, assist, and provide counsel to all student-athletes in the areas of academics, eligibility and career counseling. Its primary, constant goal is to develop graduates from Auburn University who have contributed in the arenas of athletic competition during their tenures of education, which are articulate, confident, poised, positive, cooperative, and mature decision makers, and who are outstanding examples of Auburn University’s commitment to the development of the whole individual. It is incumbent upon the members of SASS to keep abreast of the progress of student-athletes and to maintain constant communication with the student-athletes and periodic communication with their coaches, their Academic Advisors in their respective Dean’s Offices, and their parents and/or guardians. Ultimately the purpose of SASS is to empower student-athletes to become more effective learners and to assist them in developing skills that will enhance their academic progress, their social development, and their cultural appreciation. It is the SASS counselors who serve as catalysts to help student-athletes benefit fully from their experiences at Auburn University. Academic Support Services Academic Advising Each student-athlete is assigned to a Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) Athletics Academic Counselor located in the Student-Athlete Development Center (SADC). In conjunction with the student-athlete’s specified Dean’s Office Advisor, SASS Counselors monitor course registration and long range academic planning. SASS Counselors provide direction for student-athletes, preparing them to better comply with Auburn University, the Southeastern Conference, and NCAA policies and procedures. Student-athletes should make an appointment to see their assigned Dean’s Office Advisor, as well as their SASS Coun- selor prior to registration each semester. SASS Counselors provide guidance in choosing a major, progression toward a degree, and dropping, adding, and withdrawing from courses. Since all changes in coursework must be in compliance with the rules and regulations of Auburn University and the NCAA, student-athletes must meet with their assigned SASS Counselors before making any changes to their schedules. The SASS Counselors monitor and forecast the academic progress of student-athletes. Information regarding grades, attendance, and overall effort is requested periodically from professors. Tutoring and additional assessment of skills will be provided for student-athletes as deemed appropriate. Academic Policies Adding or Dropping Classes Before adding/dropping a class you need to talk with your Academic Counselor and get their approval. Class Add: The last day to add a class is the 5th class day (Fall/Spring). Class Drop: The last day to drop a class with no grade assignments is the 15th class day (Fall/Spring). Class Withdraws Before withdrawing from a class you need to talk with your Academic Counselor and get their approval. The last day to withdrawal from a class is mid-semester. Withdrawing from a class will result in a “W” on your transcript, but this will not affect your GPA. 4
GAP (Grade Adjustment Policy) A GAP allows you to delete a maximum of three (3) course grades of D or F (including FA or U) associated with your undergraduate degree program from the computation of your term and cumulative GPA. • You may not GAP any grades from transferred credits, previous degrees, or grades resulting from academic misconduct. • If you GAP a required course, you must repeat the course at Auburn before graduation. • To use a GAP, a request must be initiated with your Dean’s Office Advisor. • The final approval/denial of the GAP is made by the Senior Associate Athletics Director for SASS. Change of Major It is imperative that student-athletes consult with their SASS Athletics Academic Counselor prior to a change in major. NCAA degree program regulations must be reviewed so that one’s eligibility to compete is not jeopardized. Please see your Dean’s Office Advisor for details regarding how to change majors between colleges. Student-Athlete Policy Statements Importance of Being on Time: In relation to all academic responsibilities, it is imperative that Auburn University student- athletes arrive for all meetings on time. Those academic meetings include class, tutor and mentor sessions, study table and meetings with your Academic Counselor or Dean’s Office Advisor. Importance of Attendance Until Academic Meetings are Concluded: In relation to all academic responsibilities, it is imperative that Auburn University student-athletes remain in classrooms and other meetings until those academic meetings are concluded. Those academic meetings include class, tutor and mentor sessions, study table and meetings with your Academic Counselor or Dean’s Office Advisor. Expected Class Behavior: It is imperative that Auburn University student-athletes attend all classes and be attentive during class sessions. When possible, student-athletes should sit as close to the front of the room as possible. Cell phones and headphones should be off and out of sight. Private conversations with friends should not occur during class sessions. Excused Absences: If a student-athlete misses class while competing for Auburn University in an athletic competition, any class absences during that time are considered an excused absence. A student-athlete should inform their instructor ahead of time of their plan to be out of town. GradesFirst will be utilized to send “Travel Letter” emails to all instructors and tutors who have students missing a class or tutor session due to competition or travel. In addition, an email will be sent to the student-athletes on the travel list indicating their excused times. If required by the instructor, a student-athlete may request a printed “Travel Letter” from their Academic Counselor. Arrangement to make up missed examinations and other assignments due to properly authorized excused absences shall be initiated by the student within one week from the end of the period of the excused absence (AU policy). If a student-athlete receives an absence excuse but does not travel with the team, the excuse becomes void and the student is expected to attend all scheduled meetings and classes. Accommodations: If a student-athlete qualifies for academic accommodations, please take full advantage of those accommodations. If accommodations are not provided in a timely manner, or if the accommodations are not of high quality you should contact your Learning Specialist or Academic Counselor as soon as possible. Study Table Program The goal of the Study Table Program is to ensure a professional environment that is conducive to an effective and efficient studying experience. The Study Table environment should be beneficial to independent studying, in addition to meetings with mentors and tutors. With the understanding that you as a Student-Athlete have a very busy schedule, we want to ensure that your time spent in SADC is productive. Study Table time should lead to effective learning and should enhance your overall academic success. Monitors will check to make sure students are on task, walking into rooms if needed, ensuring student-athletes are on task…actually asking to see what they are doing. If electronic devices are in use, it must be for academic purposes only. If any electronic device is being used inappropriately, students are asked once to put the item away and get back on task. If the student does not comply, they will be swiped out of Study Table and their counselor will be contacted. The Study Table Coordinator will call the appropriate Academic Counselor to report the incident and follow up with an email. The Academic Counselor is to make the Senior Associate Athletics Director aware of the situation. The head coach and sport administrator will be contacted by the Senior Associate Athletics Director if needed. Any issues involving inappropriate behavior, e.g., socializing, excessive talking, being off task, etc., will be handled in the same manner as above. Food: Student-athletes and staff members are encouraged to eat in the cantina area. If that is not feasible, student-athletes may choose to eat in the meeting room while making an effort to be on task at all times. In addition, students should place all food trash in the main receptacles located on either side of the elevator instead of leaving it in the rooms. 5

The Tiger Mentor Program supports students who have education impacting dis- abilities, as well as those who need individualized academic support, such as identified freshmen and those experiencing academic difficulties. Each student in the Program is assigned an Academic Mentor to work with them individually. Student-athletes should also be mindful that some academic departments have a much stricter unexcused absence policy. It is the responsibility of the student to know and adhere to each academic department’s policy in addition to the Athletics Department’s policy on class attendance. Positive points may be earned by a student-athlete for exceptional work in the classroom. Any points given will be subtracted from the student-athlete’s total points. Points may only be awarded by the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Services and/or the Sport Administrator. Points cannot be carried over from one semester to the next. STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY SEC and NCAA Rules A STUDENT-ATHLETE MUST: • Be enrolled in at least 12 hours any academic term (fall and spring) in which he/she practices and/or competes. • Declare a major by the beginning of the third year (fifth semester) of enrollment. 6 HOUR RULE (all student-athletes): • Have passed a minimum of 6 hours of degree applicable coursework for eligibility the following semester and in post-season competition. Additionally SEC rule states, PHED -Varsity Sport does not count toward 6 credit hour requirement. 9 HOUR RULE (football student-athletes only): • Have passed a minimum of 9 credit hours of academic coursework during the fall term and earn the Academic Progress Rate (APR) eligibility point or they will forfeit eligibility to compete in the first 4 contests of the following playing season. A student-athlete can regain eligibility for 2 games or regain full eligibility by meeting the criteria of NCAA Bylaw 14.4. 24 HOUR RULE (freshmen student-athletes): • Have passed 24 degree applicable hours during his/her first year of enrollment - a minimum of 18 hours during fall and spring terms combined with a maximum of 6 hours during summer term. 18 HOUR RULE (all student-athletes): • Have passed 18 degree applicable hours during each academic year (fall and spring terms only). 40/60/80 RULE • At the beginning of his/her third year (fifth semester) of enrollment, a student-athlete must have satisfactorily completed a minimum of 40% of the total hours required in his/her specified degree program. • At the beginning of his/her fourth year (seventh semester) of enrollment, a student-athlete must have satisfactorily completed a minimum of 60% of the total hours required in his/her specified degree program. • At the beginning of his/her fifth year (ninth semester) of enrollment, a student-athlete must have satisfactorily completed a minimum of 80% of the total hours required in his/her specified degree program. NOTE: Summer hours are not limited to 6 hours for 40/60/80 rule, unlike the 24 Hour Rule (see above) Be aware of hours required in your major. Hours must count toward your declared major to count for academic eligibility. The course requirements must be in the student’s specific major. Credit hours earned or accepted toward a voluntary or optional minor (a minor that is not a required element of the original baccalaureate degree program for all students) may not be used to satisfy percentage-of-degree requirements even if the student-athlete must complete the requirements of the voluntary or optional minor to graduate. A student-athlete may use credits earned in a minor only if the minor is a required element for all students to obtain the original baccalaureate degree. Please see your advisor for details concerning your situation. GRADE POINT AVERAGE • A student-athlete entering his/her second year (third semester) of enrollment must have a cumulative GPA of 1.80 or higher. • A student-athlete entering his/her third year (fifth semester) of enrollment must have a cumulative GPA of 1.90 or higher. • A student-athlete entering his/her fourth or fifth year (seventh semester and beyond) of enrollment must have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. Please be aware that individual colleges may have GPA requirements that are higher than the minimums required by the university. It is imperative that you check with your individual Dean’s Office Advisor and your Academic Counselor to determine the GPA necessary to maintain good academic standing. *Please be aware that every student-athlete must meet the six hour rule and the GPA requirement in order to be eligible the following semester. 15
ADMINISTRATION OF SATISFACTORY PROGRESS RULES “Satisfactory Progress” hours, are identified by the Advisor(s) in the respective school or college of the university, based on the student’s current degree program. Prior approval to take courses from another institution in the summer must be obtained from the Advisor in his/her Dean’s Office if the hours are to be used for satisfactory progress. Auburn University must have a completed Transient Form prior to completion of transfer credit. This can be completed on-line – see your Dean’s Office Advisor with questions. If you are planning to take transient courses, be sure to communicate with your Athletics Academic Counselor prior to enrollment in such courses. MISSED TERM EXCEPTION TO SATISFACTORY PROGRESS (All citations are from 2014-2015 NCAA Manual) One time during a student-athlete’s entire period of collegiate enrollment, the student-athlete can miss a complete term or consecutive terms, and his/her hours may be prorated at 9 hours per term of actual attendance, provided he/she: (1) does not compete in the sport while not enrolled; (2) is eligible for enrollment the term missed, and (3) has fulfilled satisfactory progress requirements at the time of certification. NOTE: (a) A junior college transfer may not use this exception during the first academic year of residence, and (b) any hours earned as a part-time student during the missed term may not be used for satisfactory progress. (a) Missed Term. One time during a student-athlete’s entire period of collegiate enrollment, the provisions of Bylaw 14.4.3.1 - (b) may be prorated at nine hours per term of actual attendance if the student-athlete misses a complete term or consecutive terms during an academic year, subject to the following conditions: (1) The student-athlete engaged in no outside competition in the sport during the academic term or terms in which the student was not in attendance; and (2) At the time of certification, the student has fulfilled the progress-toward-degree requirements (per Bylaw 14.4.3.1) for the terms in which the student was in attendance. (3) A transfer student from a two-year college is not eligible to use this one-time exception during the first academic year of residence at the certifying institution in order to maintain eligibility during the second year in residence. Hours earned while enrolled as a part-time student during the “missed term” may be used to satisfy the 24-/36-hour [see Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(a)], percentage-of-degree (see Bylaw 14.4.3.2) and grade-point average requirements (see Bylaw 14.4.3.3). 16

COMPLIANCE POLICIES Financial Assistance In general, three types of financial aid are available for student-athletes: 1. Full Athletic Grant-in-Aid, which covers tuition and required fees, room, board, books, and cost of attendance stipend. 2. Partial Athletic Grant-in-Aid. 3. Need-based, non-athletic federal aid. Expenses for clothing, recreation, and other normal living expenses should be identified and budgeted. For students who qualify, one of the financially beneficial programs is the Pell Grant. Other assistance is available through student loans. In accordance with the NCAA revenue distribution plan, the SEC has received money to assist student-athletes in Division I with special financial needs. The following is a list of permissible uses of this fund: cost of clothing and other essential expenses (not entertainment), cost of expendable academic course supplies and rental of non-expendable supplies that are required for all students enrolled in the course, medical and dental costs not covered by another insurance program, and costs associated with student-athlete or family emergencies. All requests must be approved by the Director of Athletics (or designee). Applying for Financial Assistance 1. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov for the current academic year. 2. Priority in consideration for most aid programs is given to students who have completed applications on or before April 1st. 3. After 1-2 weeks the Federal Processor will send the Student Aid Report (SAR) to the student electronically. If you need to make corrections to the SAR you may do so online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. 4. An award letter will be sent stating the amount and conditions involved. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained to qualify for financial aid. Grant-In-Aid (Athletic Scholarship) Beginning August 1, 2015, financial aid to student-athletes must be awarded for the period of eligibility, as defined by NCAA legislation. For those awards issued prior to August 1, 2015, notice of renewal or non-renewal of aid must be given in writing to each student-athlete on or before July 1, prior to the academic year for which it is applicable, notice comes from the Office of Student Financial Aid. Student-athletes who wish to attend summer school and receive financial aid must have the approval of their coaches and the Athletics Department. It is possible for a student-athlete to have his or her athletic grant-in-aid reduced or cancelled if the student-athlete engages in certain inappropriate behaviors, becomes ineligible for competition, fraudulently misrepresents certain information, or voluntarily withdraws from a sport. 19
