MARCH FRI 30 - APRIL THUR 5 GEEK SNEAK FilMM READY PLAYER ONE MARCH 29 In the year 2045 people can escape their harsh reality in the OASIS, an immersive virtual world where you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone — the only limits are your own imagination. OASIS creator James Halliday left his immense fortune and control of the OASIS to the winner of a contest designed to find a worthy heir. When unlikely hero Wade Watts conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends — known as the High Five — are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS and their world. THE CHINA HUSTLE MARCH 30 ONLY AT GFC From the producers of Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room comes a Wall Street heist story about a still-unfolding financial crime so big, it has the power to affect all of our wallets. Investors on the fringes of the financial world feverishly seek new alternatives for high-return investments in the global markets, and have found a goldmine in China. But when one investor discovers a massive web of fraud, everything else is called into question. Jed Rothstein’s documentary rings the alarm on the need for transparency in an increasingly deregulated financial world by following those working to uncover the biggest heist you’ve never heard of. FAKE BLOOD MARCH 30 ONLY AT GFC Rob Grant and Mike Kovac receive a disturbing fan video inspired by their previous horror movie Mon Ami, motivating them to investigate the responsibility of filmmakers in portraying violence in movies. In their pursuit of the truth they are unwittingly introduced to the real world of violent criminals and their victims.
ONLY AT GFC GOLDSTONE MARCH 30 Indigenous Detective Jay Swan arrives in the frontier town of Goldstone on a missing persons inquiry. What seems like a simple light duty investigation opens a web of crime and corruption. Jay must pull his life together and bury his differences with young local cop Josh, so together they can bring justice to Goldstone. OUTSIDE IN MARCH 30 ONLY AT GFC After serving 20 years for the crime of essentially being in the wrong place at the wrong time, 38-year-old Chris (Jay Duplass) is granted early parole thanks largely to the tireless advocacy of Carol (Edie Falco), his former high-school teacher. As he struggles with the challenges of navigating the modern world as an ex-con, and with a fraught relationship with his brother Ted (Ben Schwartz), Chris ends up confessing his romantic love for Carol—a love that, given her marital status, Carol cannot reciprocate. Or can she? STAGE RUSSIA: ANNA KARENINA MARCH 30 STAGE AND SCREEN Directed and choreographed by Angelica Cholina, this Vakhtangov Theatre production of Anna Karenina is a modern dance interpretation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel, originally published in serial installments from 1875 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Telling the life story of the titular Anna, a St. Petersburg aristocrat, against the backdrop of late 19th century Russian society, Tolstoy’s novel is widely considered a pinnacle in realist fiction. NINA WEST PRESENTS! WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971) MARCH 31 at 6 p.m. Join Nina West, national sensation and Columbus’ premier entertainer, as she pairs her favorite musicals with her bawdy, hilarious and beloved comedy. It’s the sassiest sing-along program in the country, right here at Gateway Film Center. So, bring your singing voice — and come in costume if you’re so inclined — and settle in for a new tradition. Each Nina West Presents! screening begins with a mixer with Nina in the GFC lounge 90 minutes before showtime.
ISLE OF DOGS APRIL 5 In the future, an outbreak of canine flu leads the mayor of a Japanese city to banish all dogs to an island that’s a garbage dump. The outcasts must soon embark on an epic journey when a 12-year-old boy arrives on the island to find his beloved pet. Isle of Dogs is the new film from visionary director Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom) and features the voices of Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, Jeff Goldblum, and more. THE ROYAL OPERA: CARMEN STAGE AND SCREEN APRIL 9 at 6:30 p.m. and APRIL 11 at 1:30 p.m. Carmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form – numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. The opera’s heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after, and never learned of the spectacular success his Carmen would achieve: the opera has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone. This ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. BIG FISH & BEGONIA APRIL 11 & 12 2 NIGHTS ONLY! SUBBED AND DUBBED From ancient Chinese legends comes a beautiful tale of love and sacrifice from animators Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun. In a world unseen by humans exists a mystical race of beings that control the tide and the changing of the seasons. But one of these beings, a young girl named Chun, wants to experience the human world, not simply observe it. When she turns sixteen, Chun is allowed to transform into a dolphin and explore the human world. She is rescued from a vortex by a human boy at the cost of his own life. Moved by his kindness and courage, she decides to give the boy life again, but this power comes at a price. BEIRUT APRIL 11 A U.S. diplomat (Jon Hamm) flees Lebanon in 1972 after a tragic incident at his home. Ten years later, he is called back to war-torn Beirut by a CIA operative (Rosamund Pike) to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind. Beirut is the new film from director Brad Anderson (The Machinist) and writer Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton). EYES OF MY MOTHER (2016) FRIGHT CLUB APRIL 11 at 6:30 p.m. The second Wednesday of every month, Fright Club records their podcast at GFC, followed by one of their favorite, lesser known-horror flicks. Happy Hour in The Torpedo Room at 6:30 p.m., HORROR FILMS then join the discussion at the live Fright Club podcast at 7:30 p.m.! This month’s pick 100 Bloody Acres screens at 8 p.m.

APRIL FRI 6 - THUR 12 THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (1970) APRIL 5 In 1970, debut director Dario Argento indelibly redefined the “giallo” genre of murder mysteries with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, catapulting him to international stardom. With sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) and a seductive Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight) score, this landmark film has never looked or sounded better. BLOCKERS APRIL 5 Lisa, Hunter, and Mitchell learn that their teenage daughters plan to lose their virginity on prom night. The worried parents soon embark on an all-night quest to stop the girls from sealing the deal. A QUIET PLACE (2018) APRIL 5 A family lives an isolated existence in utter silence, for fear of an unknown threat that follows and attacks at any sound. Director John Krasinski (The Hollars) and Emily Blunt (Sicario) star as a rural couple haunted by the evil that is attracted to sound. Millicent Simmonds, the breakout star of 2017’s Wonderstruck, plays the couple’s deaf daughter. GEMINI APRIL 5 ONLY AT GFC WITH A SHORT FILM, ASPIRATIONAL A heinous crime tests the complex relationship between a tenacious personal assistant (Lola Kirke) and her Hollywood starlet boss (Zoë Kravitz). As the assistant travels across Los Angeles to unravel the mystery, she must stay one step ahead of a determined policeman and confront her own understanding of friendship, truth, and celebrity.
APRIL FRI 13 - THUR 19 THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS (1971) APRIL 13 This second entry in Dario Argento’s “Animal Trilogy” found the young talent further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as master of the giallo. When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, a blind puzzle-maker (Karl Malden) overhears an attempt to blackmail an institute scientist shortly before the robbery, and teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo (James Franciscus) to crack the case. Soon the bodies pile up, and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. WHERE IS KYRA? APRIL 13 Where is Kyra? tells the story of Kyra Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer), a middle-aged divorcee who moves into her elderly mother’s Brooklyn apartment while she looks for work and tries to get back on her feet. When her mother suddenly dies, Kyra is left without any support, both emotional and financial, and finds herself with very few options — none of them good. BORG MCENROE APRIL 13 It’s the summer of 1980 and Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) is the top tennis player in the world, dominating the sport both on and off the court. A powerful and rigorously disciplined player, there is only one obstacle in his pursuit of a record-breaking fifth Wimbledon championship: the highly talented but ferociously abrasive young American, John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf). LOWLIFE APRIL 13 MARROWBONE APRIL 13 What happens when you throw together a fallen Mexican Four siblings seek refuge in an old home after the death of wrestler with serious rage issues, a just-out-of-prison ex-con their mother, only to discover that the house has another, with a regrettable face tattoo, and a recovering junkie motel more sinister, inhabitant, in this haunting directorial debut owner in search of a kidney? That’s the premise of the from Sergio G. Sánchez (writer of The Orphanage and The berserk, blood-spattered, and wickedly entertaining feature Impossible). debut from Ryan Prows. SUMMER IN THE FOREST APRIL 13 Summer in the Forest is a new documentary that explores the life and work of author and philosopher Jean Vanier. It traces Vanier’s activism and faith from wartime to present day and reveals the universal need for love, community and companionship.

APRIL FRI 20 - THUR 6 DEEP RED (1975) APRIL 20 The ultimate giallo. Aided by a throbbing score from legendary proggers Goblin, this hallucinatory fever dream is punctuated by some of the most expert set pieces the genre has to offer. One lonely night, musician Marcus (David Hemmings) looks up from the plaza below and witnesses the brutal axe murder of a woman in her apartment. Racing to the scene, Marcus just misses the perpetrator — or does he? As he takes on the role of amateur sleuth, Marcus ensnares himself in a bizarre web of murder and mystery where nothing is what it seems. FOXTROT APRIL 20 Michael and Dafna experience gut-wrenching grief when army officials show up at their home to announce the death of their son Jonathan. Michael becomes increasingly frustrated by overzealous mourning relatives and well-meaning army bureaucrats. APRIL FRI 27 - MAY THUR 3 SUSPIRIA (1977) APRIL 27 The ultimate Argento. Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR APRIL 26 Directed by Ohio natives Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, Avengers: Infinity War brings together Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, and the rest of the Avengers, as they unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment. BUNGO STRAY DOGS: DEAD APPLE APRIL 27 The Japanese manga series written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa hits the big screen! The city of Yokohama has fallen into a terrifying nightmare. Over 500 people with supernatural powers have been found dead. The Armed Detective Agency is on the case, but just as the mission begins, Osamu Dazai mysteriously disappears. NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: JULIUS CAESAR APRIL 30 at 6:30 p.m. and MAY 2 at 1:30 p.m. STAGE AND SCREEN Caesar returns in triumph to Rome and the people pour out of their homes to celebrate. Alarmed by the autocrat’s popularity, the educated élite conspire to bring him down. After his assassination, civil war erupts on the streets of the capital. Nicholas Hytner’s production will thrust the audience into the street party that greets Caesar’s return, the congress that witnesses his murder, the rally that assembles for his funeral, and the chaos that explodes in its wake.
