To Die For is the debut film of Polish-born
German filmmaker Grzegorz Muskala. In this
psychological drama, a student travels to
Berlin to study law, only to find he’s much more
drawn to other quests that prove to be life-
threatening. When Martin finds a small and
deteriorated apartment, he decides to take
no notice of the previous tenant’s inexplicable
disappearance, while simultaneously falling for
his femme fatale of a landlady.
This award-winning production (Best Original

Tamilnadu 2015), conceived as the director’s
graduation project, is a frightening, color-
drenched, and often blackly funny take on
the horrors of first love, and the worst fears

When Frank moved into his new flat, he dreamed of a peaceful building with nice
neighbors and cheap rent. The last thing he wanted was terror. However, that’s just
what he gets in Unlocked, a terrifying Swedish thriller, where fear comes home to
roost.
Frank is a young student in search of tranquillity. He’s almost finished with a long
period of medical school, and knowing that his future work will, quite literally, be a
matter of life and death, he wants a safe place to relax when he’s off the clock. His
simple dream soon becomes a nightmare, courtesy of his new neighbours, Lotte
and her boyfriend Micke.

Lotte seems, at first, to just be an annoyingly chatty girl, but
when the obsessive Micke becomes suspicious of Frank things
take a turn for the worse.
Micke falls into a jealous rage, suspecting that Frank is trying to
steal his girlfriend. He tries to drive Frank away, first by making
death threats. Soon, Micke follows Frank everywhere; through
the halls of the building, to his own front door, and even down
into the dark alleyways behind the building. Frank’s home has
become a hellish prison, and Micke is his warden.
With clear influences of Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski and
Brian De Palma, directorial team Johan Lundborg and Johan
Storm have fashioned a smooth and elegant psychological
thriller with a liberal dose of old-fashioned horror.
Lonely medical student Frank is pleased with his flat: a safe,
quiet haven where he can relax. When he meets his intrusive
neighbor Lotte, he realizes that something may be wrong.
Each time he leaves his apartment, Frank finds something new
to fear.
INTERVIEW WITH

Some viewers, after watching the movie, thought about the “silly” things people do
when they’re afraid. Which is the most awkward thing your character did? Would you
ever do that yourself?
Well, Frank has some pretty strange reactions. One that stands out is when he pretends
to be preoccupied with his surroundings: like when he pulls the toilet string over and over
again to seem busy. I do the same thing when I feel threatened. I’ll pretend to be on the
phone, or talking to someone across the street. Actually, this can be a great trick – the only
way to scare off an attacking Lion is to pretend you see someone behind its back.
What was it like to work on a thriller like this? Was it your first time working in this kind
of film?
It was great fun, but very exhausting. There were so many intense, terrifying scenes. The
most difficult were the ones where I was all alone in a room, just reacting to the different
sounds. As an actor it was great; you tune your whole body into a state of high alertness
and tension. It´s a great way to feel alive! It was my first time in this kind of thriller, but I
once played a disturbed and abusive therapist in a drama Guidance (2009).

How did you prepare for the character of
Frank?
To get Frank’s speech patterns just right, I
had a language coach whom I worked with
for a long time. Frank originated from the city
of Bergen, where they have a very unusual
dialect that fits his personality perfectly. I
come from a family of doctors, so I could talk
to my parents and sister quite a lot about
medicine, and I also went to some lectures
and pretended to be a medical student. The
hardest part was the way that I had to change
parts of my body, like a way I moved, always
on guard and never giving away a smile.
Which would you say is the most terrifying
character in the film?
In «Unlocked» I guess Frank is the most
terrifying character. When someone is
frightened, you never know what they’ll
do; they’re unpredictable, and Frank is in a
constant state of fear. Although, from Frank’s
and the audience’s point of view, I think Peter
Stormare’s character, Micke, is the most
frightening.
When you were a child, was there any
character that you found especially
frightening?
I was terrified of Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
Also Bob, from Twin Peaks. I think he was the
scariest, because he existed mostly in the
viewer’s imagination. You almost never get to
see him.
How would you personally react if you were
living in a building like the one in Unlocked?
I think I´d be like Frank and try to contact
the police. Although I hope to God I’d be
calm enough to help the fleeing girl into my
apartment instead of locking myself into the
bathroom!
What would you say makes this film different from other modern Swedish films?
It´s a psychological thriller, not a police movie or murder story. It´s more in the spirit of Polanski and Hitchcock, which I
think is very unusual for a Swedish movie. I don´t think I´ve ever seen a Swedish film in this genre.
What are your plans for the future? Are you working in new projects?
I just finished shooting two feature films, the Swedish film Ego and also Sara Johnsen´s next feature film. And I just shot a
pilot for a Swedish love drama called Hypnosia, so if the producers go for it, I guess we´ll shoot the rest of it soon. I’ll also
start with another film project this spring, but I can´t talk too much about it yet. I am going to LA in March and April to
meet with some agents and managers. Since English is my mother tongue, I´d like to start working in English and American
movies as well.

The Good Neighbor is the feature film debut of German director
Stephan Rick, known in his homeland for directing a successful
children’s television series nominated for the International Emmy
Award. The movie follows a journalist, David, who becomes close
with his new neighbor, Robert. One night, things go out of control
when David accidentally kills a young woman. Willing to protect
his new friend, Robert helps to hide the evidence, but things get
odd when Robert will stop at nothing to keep his new friend from
being taken away.
Premiered in competition at the 2011 Shanghai International Film
Festival, The Good Neighbor accomplished its purpose of being
a heart-stopping drama, and was acclaimed by the press for its
deep and thrilling scenes. A cold psychodrama and edgy thriller
filled with moral anxieties and suburban violence, it was praised

comedy, Last Chance for Love.
Last Chance for Love, an ensemble
piece, tells a cathartic story that takes
place in a small provincial village in
Spain. Edoardo, a composer who’s
found himself in a critical emotional
and creative situation, takes a sabbatical
from his work and goes to a small
Spanish town for a break. There he
meets a chaotic amateur choir and four
women who will change his life forever.
Re-inspired and finding a common bond
in music and singing, both the composer
and the choir find a new purpose that
has surprising consequences for all
involved.
In this hilarious romantic comedy, there
is also Emilio, Edoardo’s friend, whose
chances for love are also very slim. But
now the tables start turning, thanks to
Edoardo and the choir as it becomes the
perfect excuse to approach the woman

The film’s witty plot is enriched by A-list
actors that include Maribel Verdú,

How did you come up with the story of Last Chance for Love?
I lived the experience of the choir and I wanted to tell a story in which the
music, especially in an “aggregating” form like the one of a polyphonic
choir, manages to unite the most disparate and distant individuals,
creating a bond that cancels all social and cultural differences. A sort of
therapy.
How would you describe the film to an international audience? What
makes it different from other European comedies?
My movie is a cathartic story . . . Edoardo, my protagonist, expresses the
discomfort of living in a country, Italy, where culture is not so important.
He can’t accept it. He lives a sort of human and professional redemption
due to his “therapeutic exchange” working with the choir. The tagline
could be: “How life can be shaken upside down by the arrival of a
stranger.”
I love European comedies, such as Calendar Girls, The Full Monty,
Intouchables. The problem is to make European comedies as an Italian
director. I hope to make Italian comedy with a European spirit!
How was the experience of directing an international cast, with actors
from Spain, Argentina, Italy, Serbia, etc.?
It was wonderful! It was funny to mix actors from different countries and
cultures ― very stimulating and enriching!
You had in the cast famous and award-winning actors like Maribel
Verdú and Miki Manojlovic; how important was their presence to
develop the project?
It was very important to develop the project and I think Spanish actors
are available and friendly; they helped the crew and cast by creating a
very good atmosphere. Miki is a very good actor and is able to express
Edoardo’s malaise with funny details.
What did you find most challenging while filming the movie?
Working in harmony. I try to be a “calm” director, a “female director”
with my special point- of-view, looking for humor and respect in every
moment.
In every comedy, there are funny anecdotes behind the scenes. Are there any in particular that you remember to this
day?
Italian actor Neri Marcorè was always able to “kill” every tension with his sense of humor and his kind behavior. The last day
of shooting, he gave one rose to every woman of the set. Hector Alterio, a wonderful 80-year-old Argentine actor was always
perfect as an old soldier of the Franco period. The only time he made a mistake in a scene, he stopped and apologized to
everybody. He has to teach his elegant way of acting and living on a set to everybody!

Sherlock Holmes
The ultimate detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes was created by
British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not part of a police department
but instead a consultant detective, Holmes first appeared in print
in 1887, and became the protagonist in four novels and 56 short
stories. His proficiency in observation, forensic science, and logical
reasoning that borders on the fantastic has been adapted many times
to television and cinema, with more than 70 actors playing the part in
over 200 films. The most famous in recent years have been the 2009
film Sherlock Holmes, which earned Robert Downey Jr. a Golden Globe
Award, Benedict Cumberbatch on the TV series Sherlock, and Jonny
Lee Miller in Elementary.
Jules Maigret
The brainchild of Belgian author Georges Simenon, Inspector Jules
Maigret is a commissaire (commissioner) of the Paris «Brigade
Criminelle» who appeared in 76 novels and 28 short stories published
between 1931 and 1972. Maigret has been portrayed by numerous
well-known actors, including Pierre Renoir, Charles Laughton, Jean
Gabin, Bruno Cremer, and Rowan Atkinson. The latter two have been
the most famous, as Cremer played the character in 54 adaptations
during 1991–2005 in a series aired by Eurochannel, and Atkinson is the
star of the new adaptation in the United Kingdom.
Hercule Poirot
Created by English crime novelist, short story writer, and playwright
Agatha Christie, Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective who appeared in
33 novels, one play, and more than 50 short stories published between
1920 and 1975. The character has also been portrayed on radio, film,
and television by various actors, including John Moffatt, Albert Finney,
Sir Peter Ustinov, Sir Ian Holm, Alfred Molina, Orson Welles, and most
notably, David Suchet. The latter starred in the series Agatha Christie’s
Poirot from 1989 until June 2013.

in different sides of law enforcement in their city who are tracing a criminal, we have selected three famous fictional
detectives that became icons of television in different eras.
Sherlock Holmes
The ultimate detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes was created
by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His proficiency in

demeanor, cigar, old Peugeot 403 car, unseen wife, and

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully
They became the world’s favorite FBI agents/detectives of the 1990s
as the protagonists of the science-fiction drama The X-Files. Mulder
is an Oxford-educated FBI special agent who believes in the existence
of extraterrestrials and a government conspiracy to hide the truth
regarding them. He works in the X-Files office, which is concerned with
cases marked as unsolvable; most involve supernatural/mysterious
circumstances. Scully is an FBI special agent, a medical doctor, and
scientist who is Mulder’s partner. In contrast to his credulity, Scully is
a skeptic, basing her beliefs on scientific explanations.
