ANZAC Day Ceremony Friday 24.04.2020 It’s very important to teach the young children about history. Because the world we live in today is based on events that have happened previously. As one of the most important national commemorative occasions in Australis, ANZAC Day falls on 25th April every year. When we see people wearing poppies on their clothes, it’s lovely to share some historical stories with the children, and then to help our next generations to understand the life and times of Australia and its people. ANZAC ceremony and traditions are such an integral part of Australian culture. By setting up a tuff tray ANZAC Day ceremony site, we shared with the children that how we should remember and say thank you to the brave soldiers who work very hard to keep the world we live in safer for us all. We had One-Minute Silence, showed respect to our national anthem, flags and laid poppy flowers to the “battle field”. When the children stood up alto- gether, we promoted their sense of unity and a collective pride of the country. The often used phrase “lest we forget” had also been explained to the children that it was a reminder to everyone: “We should not forget” and we should always remember the actions of our soldiers who fought very hard in the wars. This role-play enhanced the children’s understanding of peace, countries, culture and identity. It also helped them to prepare themselves for attending a public service in the future, so they would know what behaviour would be expected of the them. — Miss Sue
Preparing for the Ceremony — 24.04.2020 L.O 2.1 Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communi- ties and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active community participation. Before the Anzac ceremony Miss Sue took a group of children to set up a memorial area to lay flowers out of respect. They collected natural materials from the gar- den and sand from the sand pit to recreate the battle- fields on the shores of Gallipoli. We made small posters that said “Lest we forget” and made our own paper doll soldiers to decorate. The children were heavily involved in the preparation and loved helping. - Miss Emily
Poppy Flowers Collage On 20.04.2020 In the morning, when Miss Sue invited the children to sit down at the tables with her, she explained what she wanted them to do. She showed them an already made poppy flower, then one by one, she named all the resources we needed for the day. The children iden- tified all the shapes, colours and textures. They liked the pretty flowers, and when they finished making one, they proudly showed it to their teachers. The meaning behind this collage has also been introduced to the children. Later, some children also drew soldiers with Miss Sue, some of them even remembered to put hats on for the soldiers. — Miss Sue

After all the festivities today we took a moment to relax and sit together on the group time mat for a story. Today we read a sweet story called “the paper dolls.” This book is a sweet story showcasing the magic of childhood, memories and the power of imagination.
