The Amazon Discover Earth’s Greatest Wilderness Be immersed in the legendary Amazon rainforest. From its first trickle high in the Andes Mountains, the Amazon River winds more than 4,200 miles through South America. The river and its thousand tributaries snake past frontier cities and remote villages in six countries before spilling 500 billion cubic feet of water into the Atlantic. But the Amazon is far more than water. The Amazon’s bounty continues beyond its banks. The forest is home to more than 40,000 plant species and an eclectic culture of shamen, farmers and curious children. And for those who join International Expeditions’ immersive Peruvian adventure along the narrow streams and wide channels of this sprawling basin for an intimate look at the rainforest, the Amazon is still the river of dreams. Get to Know All the Amazon’s Inhabitants A Dense Jungle Bursting with Life T HE PERUVIAN AMAZON’S sprawling tangle of rivers, creeks, forests and lagoons is not only home to an astounding diversity of wildlife, it is also home to a vibrant culture of Ribereños descended from European and indigenous forebears. While traveling with knowledgeable, local naturalists, you explore the fascinating relationship of this river, its diverse wildlife and the inhabitants who live perched along its banks. From huge ringed kingfishers to prehistoric hoatzins and chattering parrots, our daily nature excursions observe enough birdlife to engross even the most avid birder. And the deep friendships International Expeditions has built with the local Ribereños over the past 39 years mean you’ll be greeted like family while learning about their schools, medicinal plants and traditional ceremonies. And because many of IE’s Expedition Leaders and Zafiro’s naturalists grew up in these same river villages before pursuing their scientific education, you’ll gain insight into the environment and people far beyond what you could learn in a guidebook. 6
WHAT OUR GUESTS ARE SAYING “The organization, fellow travelers and the amount of knowledge I learned from exceptional leaders made the trip for me an over the top experience. This trip surpassed any expectations I had. The organization and knowledge of Dennis, Juan and Daniel made the Amazon Voyage. They were helpful 100% of the time and patient. They also had a great sense of humor. I would do another trip with them in a minute.” Cathy Pomeroy 7
Leaf-cutter ants Dusky titi monkey Piranha “If anything, the trip exceeded my expectations — and my expectations were quite high! Seeing the Amazon River… Seeing the wildlife… Visiting the villages… It was all good! I appreciated the obvious interest given to protection of the environment and to the emphasis on helping us understand the local culture.” Joseph W. Mathews “The entire Amazon Voyage was outstanding. I can’t pick out one specific highlight… an incredible experience to be on the big rivers during high water season and see the biological diversity in the rainforest. I was very pleased with the relationship that IE and the crew have developed with the local people.” Joe & Val Hillers

The Expertise Defining the Amazon Experience for Almost 40 Years Beyond the inland port of Iquitos, the Amazon landscape changes dramatically from bustling frontier town to encompassing wilderness. In 1980, International Expeditions pioneered travel to the Peruvian Amazon, and our nature-focused, small-group options remain the standard for exploring the Amazon. In addition to investing decades of thought and passion into the region, we “founded” small-ship expedition travel to the area – training guides and developing innovative itineraries crafted to offer you incredibly immersive experiences. These four decades of insight and expertise ensure the mysteries of the Amazon come alive as you float down peaceful tributaries and hear the region’s traditional tales and music from your local Expedition Leader, naturalist guides and crew. This dedicated, highly educated staff ensures you walk away understanding the complex relationship between the river, rainforest, wildlife and those who live their lives surrounded by this delicate environment… a relationship that can only be revealed by those who know it best. Dennis Osorio, Your Guide to the Peruvian Amazon Born and raised in Lima by a family of Andean descent, Dennis Osorio spent his childhood traveling to Cusco, Machu Picchu and his grandparents’ farm. He ultimately got a Master’s Degree in hotel and tourism management (with a concentration in Sustainable Tourism), then headed to South Africa’s Inkwazi Ranger Training School and became a naturalist guide. But his heart soon led him back to his native country. Q: How did you originally become interested in nature and wildlife? A: As a Boy Scout, I learned to respect nature, and enjoyed looking for lizards, frogs and birds. I was so impressed the first time I saw an Andean condor flying close in one of the camps. In Machu Picchu, during my training in birding, we found a golden-headed quetzal, an Andean motmot and an Andean cock of the rock, all in the same tree. Q: Why is sustainable ecotourism is important to you? A: The tourism industry needs to be sustainable, because each activity we do leaves a footprint. IE’s Amazon cruise visits the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, which benefits the area instead of polluting and using up the resources. We set a plan which helps to preserve and improve the quality of life in the Amazon: Our guests bring school supplies for local schools; we have water treatment programs in the communities we visit; and we hire locals villagers as trackers so they can increase their incomes by protecting and guiding visitors in the forest instead to hunting and logging. Q: What makes the Amazon River so special? A: Every place in the world has its charm. The Amazon is full of life, so wherever you look you’ll see or hear something. Because it’s remote, you don’t have to worry about anything other than enjoying the sunsets, the sounds of the forest, the friendliness of the people and the amazing wildlife. Each excursion has a highlight, from Poison Dart Frogs to Red Howler Monkeys. Every day we know what we are looking for, but we never know what we’re going to find. Q: What do you hope travelers who visit the Amazon will take away from their experience? A: I hope they go home knowing that their visit was not only enjoyable, but also generated benefits for the local people and wildlife. Travelers seem to be getting more conscious of their impact, and choosing the right tour operator is an important factor. In the end, I just hope they come away with a once-in-a-lifetime experience they will never forget. Read the complete interview at IEtravel.com/blog

EXPEDITION MOMENT “There were several highlights that made this trip unforgettable. It was our second day of exploring the Amazon River and the highlight was certainly going to be fishing for piranha… we survived with all digits intact and a combined haul of over 35 piranhas were caught and released. Probably our most ‘decadent spoiled guest’ moment was when our guides served us champagne on the skiffs while we sat and watched the sun set over the Amazon horizon.” Larry Grossman 13

The Experience An Adventure Like No Other Beyond the untamed frontier along the river’s edge, and underneath a dense canopy, daily excursions allow you to walk jungle paths and discover the secrets hidden in narrow tributaries. In this silent wilderness be amazed by the symphony of cicadas and tree frogs after a downpour. Against a backdrop of jungle and surging water, moments of wonder create memories you’ll share for a lifetime: the joy reflected in the eyes of a child as you visit his/her school and village; the enveloping darkness as you listen to the nighttime sounds of the jungle; or the flash of awe as you sit in a small skiff or kayak, flanked by forest and surging river. By traveling with International Expeditions, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the diverse mosaic of habitats — primary forest, wetlands and terra firma — comprising the heart of the Amazon. The living Amazon is a labyrinth of forests, wildlife and people, all bisected by this storied river. When you embark on this adventure with International Expeditions, you’ll find more than an exciting voyage — you’ll discover how varied, educational and just plain fun an Amazon experience can be. Each day in the Amazon is a new adventure, and IE’s seasoned Expedition Leaders have years of experience adjusting each day’s schedule to make the most of changing seasons, wildlife sightings and local festivities. While the daily itinerary onboard may vary, the events of a typical day on the Amazon River follow a similar pattern. 6:30 AM Your native naturalists know the best time to observe the Amazon’s 1,800 species is just before dawn. They are happy to join you for optional bird-watching. 8:00 AM Start your day with fresh exotic fruits purchased in villages along the river. 9:00 AM Head into narrow tributaries aboard sturdy boats, watching for birdlife and primates. You’ll also encounter friendly fishermen. 12:00 PM The lunch buffet offers something for every taste and a delicious array of ice cream — we recommend the lucuma. 1:00 PM Siesta time is perfect for relaxing or reading in the plush, air-conditioned lounge or taking advantage of the spa. 2:00 PM Afternoon excursions include optional swimming in Amazonian waters, wildlife viewing and a visit to a Ribereño village. IE intentionally varies village visits to ensure you enjoy an authentic experience. 6:00 PM The house band entertains each night, playing both traditional music and unexpected favorites — like The Beatles — on Peruvian instruments. 7:15 PM Lively conversation is coupled with delicious Peruvian and Continental fare to make meal time a special experience. 8:30 PM Settle in for a briefing by your highly educated local naturalists. 9:00 PM Enjoy a nighttime foray into the rainforest and tributaries.

DECEMBER 22, 2017 AMAZON VOYAGE REVIEW: “The Amazon Voyage with International Expeditions exceeded by leaps and bounds all my expectations. The people were the main reason for my complete satisfaction with the trip. The passion of the expedition leader and naturalists was contagious, and I loved how all the crew on board chipped in in various ways to make the experience complete for all the passengers (for example, the cooks and naturalists participating in the musical performances during the evenings). I was constantly amazed by all the details that International Expeditions thought about during the trip, whether it was the champagne on the last boat excursion or the breakfast on the skiffs.
