Notes for Today’s Services Hearing Loop An induction loop system is provided for hearing device users. To use, turn your hearing device to “T” setting. Bulletins After the service, please take your bulletin home with you to recycle, or return it to an usher for recycling. Please do not return it to the stack of bulletins. A QR code is also available upon entry for those who wish to access a hands-free digital bulletin. Singing While vaccinated people are permitted to sing, our unvaccinated parishioners are still not permitted to do so. So that we do not silence select parishioners who are worshiping among us at church, we will refrain from congregational singing at this time. Masks & Hand Sanitizer In line with public health protocol, vaccinated people may choose whether or not to mask. If you are uncomfortable in any way, feel free to wear a mask. Unvaccinated people must continue to mask and socially distance. If you need or want to wear a mask, and have forgotten to bring one from home, an Usher can provide you with a mask. Children’s mask are also available. There are hand sanitizing stations at the entrance of the church. Social Distancing To respect the diverse needs of our community of faith, we invite everyone to please respect social distancing between households when seated and receiving communion. Ushers will guide people to assist in this effort. Remember, our unvaccinated members, youngest members, and medically vulnerable members will still need to socially distance, and everyone’s cooperation will help ensure their health and well-being. HVAC System Our HVAC system is operating with 100% outside air, meaning that the air is not recirculated, but replaced with outside air. There are six changes of air per hour for either conditioned air or fresh air. Children Children of all ages are welcome in worship, so relax! Since God put the wiggle in children, don’t feel as if you have to suppress it in God’s house. If you need to leave the service with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.” One-time use children’s coloring bags are available from the Ushers. Please take the one-time use bag home with you. 2
Prelude All stand, as able, at the ringing of the bell. The Word of God Presider This is the day the Lord has made. People Let us rejoice and be glad in it. While vaccinated people are permitted to sing, our unvaccinated parishioners are still not permitted to do so. So that we do not silence parishioners who are worshiping among us at church, we will refrain from congregational singing at this time. Processional Hymn ~ Now let us rise and hymn the grace (sung by trio) Now let us rise and hymn the grace that brings us to this time and place. Full dedication here is owed the riches that our past bestowed: God, in this time your church renew; enable us your will to do. That we may open love’s embrace to welcome all the human race, here let no walls of hate divide, but let Christ’s “Peace!” alone abide. God, help us all this dream fulfill; enable us to do your will. Rejoicing let us take this “Peace!” Into the world that we increase Christ’s reign of justice, truth, and love that heaven come on earth, and of this blessing we, with grace anew, still seek God’s will to know and do. The Collect for Purity Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Collect of the Day Presider Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 3
Please be seated. The First Lesson 2 Samuel 7:1-14a Reader A reading from the second book of Samuel. When the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.” Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.” But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 89:20-37 Read together. 20 I have found David my servant; * with my holy oil have I anointed him. 21 My hand will hold him fast * and my arm will make him strong. 22 No enemy shall deceive him, * nor any wicked man bring him down. 23 I will crush his foes before him * and strike down those who hate him. 24 My faithfulness and love shall be with him, * and he shall be victorious through my Name. 25 I shall make his dominion extend * from the Great Sea to the River. 26 He will say to me, 'You are my Father, * my God, and the rock of my salvation.' 27 I will make him my firstborn * and higher than the kings of the earth. 28 I will keep my love for him for ever, * and my covenant will stand firm for him. 4
29 I will establish his line for ever * and his throne as the days of heaven." 30 "If his children forsake my law * and do not walk according to my judgments; 31 If they break my statutes * and do not keep my commandments; 32 I will punish their transgressions with a rod * and their iniquities with the lash; 33 But I will not take my love from him, * nor let my faithfulness prove false. 34 I will not break my covenant, * nor change what has gone out of my lips. 35 Once for all I have sworn by my holiness: * 'I will not lie to David. 36 His line shall endure for ever * and his throne as the sun before me; 37 It shall stand fast for evermore like the moon, * the abiding witness in the sky.' " The Second Lesson Ephesians 2:11-22 Reader A reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision” —a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— remember that you were at that time with out Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Please stand, as able. Gospel Acclamation Hymn ~ Alleluia (sung by cantor) W. Boyce Presider The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. 5
The Gospel Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. Reader The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Aimée Eyer-Delevett Please observe a moment of silence after the homily. Please stand, as able. Nicene Creed (BCP) Joining with Christians throughout the centuries and throughout the world today, let us affirm the faith of the Church, saying the Nicene Creed. Together We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6
The Prayers of the People Intercessor In Jesus’ name we offer our prayers to God, who was and is and is to come, saying: Lord, hear our prayer. Presider Today, we celebrate the completion of the four-year Education for Ministry program by Cecile, David, and Sheri. This course involves study of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, church history and theology. It also involves commitment to a community and to reflection on God’s presence in our lives in an attempt to find and understand God’s purpose for each of us in living out our call to ministry in the world. Please join in celebration of these efforts. Presider Cecile, David, and Sheri, as a result of your participation in Education for Ministry, do you have a more comprehensive understanding of God, of God’s Word, and of the faith and teaching of the church? 7
Graduate I do. Presider Do you see more clearly the continuing story of God’s people and your place in that history? Graduate I do. Celebrant As a baptized Christian, you are already committed to ministry. In order to more clearly discern and carry out that ministry in your life and work, you have given yourself to four years of intensive study and exploration. Will you use the knowledge and skills you have gained in Education for Ministry to become a more effective minister? Graduate I will. Mentor On behalf of the School of Theology of the University of the South, you have received your Certificate, signifying your completion of the Education for Ministry program, and your continuing membership in this community of faithful ministers. Presider Let us pray. The EFM mentor, current EFM students and previous graduates are invited to lay hands on the graduate during the prayer. Holy and living God, you call men and women to serve in this world. Equip Cecile, David, and Sheri for their ministry and give to your servant the gift of grace they need. May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen you that, in this and in all things, you may do God’s will in furthering God’s Kingdom, to serve God, and to lead others into a deeper commitment to their baptismal vows. Amen. Confession of Sin (Only at 8 a.m.) Please kneel, as able. Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Together Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we hum- bly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Absolution Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Greet one another with the sign of peace. As you share the Peace of Christ, please be aware of other people's comfort with physical touch. If you are vaccinated, take an opportunity to ask before you shake hands or hug. Since children under age 12 cannot yet be vaccinated, try to avoid all direct physical contact with young children; elbow bumps are fine, but no hugs or handshakes. Presider The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. Announcements 8
The Holy Communion Offertory Music ~ The Lord’s my shepherd (sung by trio) B. Chilcott You will find offertory plates stationed at the back of the church for your generous giving. Ushers will refrain from passing offertory plates at this time. To learn more about making automatic contributions to All Saints-by-the-Sea, please contact our Bookkeeper, Cynthia, at bookkeeping@asbts.org. Please stand, as able. The Great Thanksgiving - Holy Eucharist Prayer A The Book of Common Prayer Presider The Lord be with you People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. Presider It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. The Priest continues Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves alone, but for him who died for us and rose again. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people may stand or kneel, as able. The Priest continues Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Loving Creator of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. 9
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Priest Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Creator, now and forever. AMEN. Presider And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Together Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ; People We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Presider Behold what you are, become what you receive, the body of Christ, beloved of God. At this time, we will celebrate Communion in one kind, receiving only bread for the time being. All Eucharistic Ministers are fully vaccinated. The Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Michael Curry, asks that we continue to serve communion in one kind as he and his colleagues discern the best way to honor our Anglican heritage of the common cup in the shadow of the pandemic. At the invitation of the ushers, please come forward to the altar rail, one at a time or as a household, to receive bread. The Eucharistic Minister will place the bread in your outstretched hands for you to place in your mouth. If you are masked, please lower your mask to place the bread in your mouth and then position your mask over your mouth and nose again. A Spiritual Communion Those not able to receive communion and/or worshiping from home can celebrate a Spiritual Communion. A Spiritual Communion is a devotional that anyone can pray at any time to express their desire to receive Holy Communion at that moment, but in which circumstances impede them from actually receiving Holy Communion. 10
O Lamb of God, in union with the faithful gathered throughout your Church, and remembering particularly my own church community, my heart longs to offer you praise and thanksgiving, for creation and all the blessings of this life, for the redemption won for me by your life, death, and resurrection, for the means of grace and the hope of glory. And particularly for the blessings given me... Add your own thanksgivings here Blessed Savior, I love you above all things, and I earnestly desire to receive you into my soul. And although I cannot receive you in bread and wine, I remember and trust your words, “This is my body; this is my blood—given for you.” I invite you into my heart spiritually. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen. Come Lord Jesus, and dwell in my heart in the fullness of your strength; be my wisdom and guide me in right pathways; conform my life and actions to the image of your holiness; in the power of your gracious might, overcome every hostile power that threatens or disturbs the growth of your kingdom; and keep me strong in faith, hope and love until we can meet at your table again; who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. (Adapted from “A Spiritual Communion,” Society of Saint John the Evangelist.) Communion Hymn ~ The King of love my shepherd is (sung by trio) The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine for ever. Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth. Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. In death’s dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spread’st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! 11
And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. Communion Hymn ~ Be a shepherd of my flock (sung by trio) Please stand, as able. The Post-Communion Prayer Presider Let us pray. Together Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing Presider May the blessing of the God of Abraham and Sarah, and of Jesus Christ born of our sister Mary, and of the Holy Spirit, who broods over the world as a mother over her children, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen. Processional Hymn ~ Dear Lord and Father (sung by trio) Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways! Reclothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up and follow thee. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity interpreted by love! The Dismissal Presider Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Alleluia! Alleluia! People Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Postlude As you exit the church, please be mindful that some parishioners may wish to stay behind to pray and/or listen to the organ postlude. 12
