St. Alban's proclaims to all, through word and deed, the grace of God in Jesus Christ. The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Choral Eucharist, Rite II September 26, 2021 9:00 & 1 1 : 1 5 AM
ADVENT | CHRISTMAS | EPIPHANY | LENT | EASTER | PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins with Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. How We Worship: We worship in heart, body, and mind. To help, we sometimes kneel or stand. At other times we make the sign of the cross to remind us Christ is for us. Such actions are not required. In the Episcopal Church, “all may, some should, none must.” NEW HERE? New here? St. Alban’s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something everybody does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God’s Word. And it reminds us every week of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. Guests: Please scan the QR code or complete the “hello” card located at the Welcome Desk so we can get to know you. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban’s tote bag. Restrooms: Located next to the Parish Hall and in the Welcome Center. INFO FOR PARENTS There are coloring materials and other activities in a basket at the entrance of the Parish Hall to help keep children mindful of worship. Children’s Chapel (ages 4-9): At the 9:00 & 11:15 AM services, children are dismissed before the Gospel reading for children’s chapel in the Godly Tots room in The Crèche. Amen. Please be seated for the readings. 6
THE WORD OF GOD The Old Testament Lesson Numbers 11:4-6,10-16,24-29 Lector A reading from Numbers. The rabble among them had a strong craving; and the Israelites also wept again, and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we used to eat in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.” Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, all at the entrances of their tents. Then the Lord became very angry, and Moses was displeased. So Moses said to the Lord, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? Did I conceive all this people? Did I give birth to them, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a sucking child,’ to the land that you promised on oath to their ancestors? Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they come weeping to me and say, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I am not able to carry all this people alone, for they are too heavy for me. If this is the way you are going to treat me, put me to death at once—if I have found favor in your sight—and do not let me see my misery.” So the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tent of meeting, and have them take their place there with you. So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again. Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, “My lord Moses, stop them!” But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!” Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 7
The Psalm is sung by the choir to Plainchant. Coverdale translation. Psalm 19:7-14 Caeli enarrant Tone VIII.1 7 The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul;* the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart;* the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever;* the judgments of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold;* sweeter also than honey, and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught;* and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth?* O cleanse thou me from my secret faults. 13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me;* so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be alway acceptable in thy sight,* O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. 8
The Epistle James 5:13-20 Lector A reading from James. Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest. My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner's soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Children’s Blessing & Dismissal At the 9:00 and 11:15 AM services, Children are invited forward for a Blessing before following the Cross to Children’s Chapel located in The Crèche. The children return before Communion. 9

Please remain standing facing the Gospel reader. The Gospel Mark 9:38-50 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched. “For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.” Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman 11
All stand. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Catholic means universal. 12
The Prayers of the People Form III Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andy, Jeff, Hector, and Kai, our Bishops; for Aaron, Neal, Kara, Keith, and Oscar, our Priests; for Alberto, our Deacon; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for our armed forces, for the people of our country, for Joe, our President; Greg, our Governor; Dillon, our Mayor; and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to all the departed, especially Graham, eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for Michael the Archangel and all your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence We pray for those on our parish prayer list; those in our parish family celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in the coming week; our local mission partners: Cedar Ridge Elementary, The Cove, reVision, and Mission Waco; the Episcopal Hispanic Mission in Waco; and our sister parish of All Saints, Nambiti, Malawi. The Celebrant adds a concluding collect. 13
Confession of Sin The Deacon says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Comfortable Words Called the “comfortable words” because of their ability to give comfort, these Bible verses (Matthew 11:28, John 3:16, 1 Timothy 1:15, 1 John 2:1-2) have been a cherished part of Anglican liturgy since the 16th century. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The people greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. Parish Announcements Infants/Toddlers at Communion: At this point of the service, some parents/caregivers choose to pick up their children from the nursery and bring them into the worship space for Communion. Offertory Anthem Love Divine Howard Goodall (b. 1958) Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heav'n, to earth come down, Fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesu, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation, enter ev'ry trembling heart. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into ev'ry troubled breast, Let us all in thee inherit, let us find that second rest: Take away our power of sinning, Alpha and Omega be, End of faith as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; Suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above; Pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, Glory in thy perfect love. Finish then thy new creation: pure and spotless let us be; Let us see thy great salvation, perfectly restored in thee; Changed from glory into glory, till in heav'n we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise! 15
All stand. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. The Celebrant adds a Proper Preface. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Please silently pray with the choir as they sing Sanctus & Benedictus Christchurch Mass Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Holy, holy, holy, Dominus Deus Sabbaoth, Lord God of Hosts: pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in excelsis! Hosanna in the highest. Benedictus qui venit Blessed is he that cometh in nomine Domini, in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in excelsis! Hosanna in the highest. 16
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Celebrant Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The people respond in a loud voice: AMEN. 17
Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Invitation to Communion & Ministration of the Sacrament All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion. See p. 15 for instructions. If you would like a gluten-free wafer, please tell the minister. If you have questions about what we believe about Communion, visit stalbanswaco.org/communion. 18

Getting Connected at St. Alban's NOTE OF GRATITUDE FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN Dear St. Alban's Family, Just a note to thank you all for your continued support and love for our parish during the time of the Zimmerman Family Sabbatical. Time passes so fast that it seems it was just early spring when we weren't sure the travel plans would unfold, but God's perfect timing (along with patience and prayer) made this experience happen. A special thank you to the Rev. Neal McGowan for his leadership over the course of the last 4 months, to our staff, volunteers and each of you, for making sure the work of St. Alban's not only continued, but grew! The fall semester is in full swing and I can't wait to see what happens next for an amazing group of people who love and serve God every day of the week...not just on Sunday. Blessings to each of you, Stephanie Kucera RENEW & RESTORE UPDATES Our historic church is undergoing its first major renovation since it was completed in 1953.
