GRADE 11 AND 12 COURSE TYPES The 5th Character indicates what type of course it is ■ ENG3U U = University Preparation ■ MCF3M M = University/College Preparation ■ BMI3C C = College Preparation ■ PAF3O O = Open ■ MEL3E E = Workplace Preparation
Choices are Important! ■ The only 2 courses you MUST choose are English & Math ■ Many grade 11 courses are prerequisites for grade 12 courses (e.g. MCR3U needed for MHF4U, SPH3U needed for SPH4U etc.) ■ Grade 12 courses are often prerequisites for post-secondary programs (e.g. MHF4U needed to study business, engineering and science in university)
Fact vs. Fiction ■ If you plan on going to university, you cannot take Open or college level courses---FICTION. (You can as long as you have six “U” or “M” level courses in Gr. 12) ■ Colleges and Universities ONLY see your grade 12 marks---FICTION (Your grade 11 and 12 marks are available to them) ■ You can pick a spare in grade 11---FICTION (Mostly). You must have successfully completed 23 credits before you can request a spare

CO-OP = EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Would you like to try 2 or 4 classes outside of the walls of SATEC? ■ You can choose 2 or 4 credit co-op: 2 credit is half day; 4 credit is full day ■ first week: in the co-op classroom preparing for work & interviewing with a prospective employer ■ Remainder of the semester: you will go to your work placement (You will return to co-op class every 2nd week) ■ It is an excellent way to try out a career before deciding about Post-secondary
SHSM ■ S H S M SHSM refers to a pecialist igh kills ajor. For this, students must take a package of 8 to 10 required credits in grades 11 & 12 ■ Your Secondary School Diploma will recognize this major area of study ■ Our school offers the ICT or Environment SHSM ■ Two credit co-op is a requirement for both.
DUAL CREDIT ■ Dual Credit is a program where you choose a college course at a college in the GTA and you earn both a high school credit and a college credit for your OSSD...a two for one!
REVISED Grade 11 Course Offering in 2019-2020 ATC3M1 - Dance ■ Learn about dance genres from around the world ■ Increase your understanding of the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations ■ research and explain how physical, intellectual, and artistic skills developed in dance can be applied in a wide range of careers ■ apply tools and techniques throughout the process of creation and presentation, and reflect on how studies in the dance arts affect personal identity Prerequisite: ATC1O1, ALC1O1 and ADA2O1 May Be Considered this year
CHANGES TO COMMUNITY HOURS RECORDING IN 2019-2020 We encourage students to develop a portfolio of accomplishments which includes a record of their community volunteer service. Beginning September 2019: ■ Guidance counsellors will only be recording the 40 hours of community service that are required for graduation ■ If students accumulate additional hours beyond the required 40, they need to manage the recording of those hours themselves
Educational Planning ■ Think about your Occupational destination and which post secondary route will take you there (Workplace, Apprenticeship, College, University) ■ Check websites for requirements (www.myBlueprint.ca/tdsb, www.ontariocolleges.ca and www.electronicinfo.ca) ■ List Grade 12 courses required for your post- secondary program, then Plan in reverse ■ Talk to your Guidance Counsellor ■ Talk to your family
What if I am planning on going to University? Keep your options open BUT ■ Select courses at the right level for you ○ college programs and apprenticeship training lead to many occupations ■ University pathway: must choose university level English ■ Choosing college or workplace math? You can still go to university depending on your program choice
What university programs require math in grade 12? ■ Science (e.g. Life and biochemical sciences, physical sciences, environmental sciences) ■ Business (e.g. Management, accounting) ■ Engineering ■ Computer Science/Information Technology ■ Math ■ Some Physical Education/Kinesiology

Looking Ahead to Gr. 12* If you take: MCR3U1 MHF4U1 MCV4U1 MCF3M1 MDM4U1 MBF3C1 MAP4C1 *Achievement at levels 3 & 4 in Grade 12 are more likely when Grade 11 achievement levels are above level 3
Making Informed Choices ■ Select courses at the right level for you ■ Choose ONLY the courses you intend to take in day school next year. If you want to take a course at summer school or at another institution, do not choose it in myblueprint ■ Summer school registration opens in the Spring (usually late april) ■ Nothing is guaranteed - there are always risks involved, so minimize risks ■ Choose 2 Alternative courses just in case 1 or more of the 8 you select cannot be timetabled

Do not pick courses randomly AND Do not base your choices on your friends’ preferences ...because
Making Informed Choices- continued ... what you choose will most likely be what you are studying next year! Why? ■ Course changes cannot be guaranteed ■ Changing your mind on taking certain courses later may result in disappointment because classes will already will be full

Oops! I’ve made a mistake with my course choices ■ March 4-to March 8 - you May request an adjustment to your course selection choices for 2019-20 ■ March 18-end of May (approximately)- No course selection adjustments ■ End of May - end of JUNE - Changes may be made if available & reasonable
