ADULT EDUCATION COURSE OFFERINGS: WINTER, 2020 BUCKS COUNTY TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL – 610 WISTAR ROAD, FAIRLESS HILLS, PA 19030 215-949-1700 extension 2952/2348 DAYTIME WALK IN REGISTRATION – MONDAY through FRIDAY - MAIN OFFICE – 8 AM – 3 PM OR EVENING WALK-IN REGISTRATION: THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2020 – 6-8 PM MOST CLASSES START WEEK OF FEBRUARY 3, 2020 ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CC – Course is designed for adults that are interested in learning how to use and create in one of the most innovative, digital design software programs. Students will learn the workspace, tools, menus, and layers with fun projects which will include drawing, painting, photo correction, typography, color, raster/vector, file usage and more. Software/ computers are provided. 6:15-8:15 PM – Tues & Thurs - $175.00 – 6 weeks BAKING – The following will be covered in this course: demonstration of cake decorating, writing, flowers, borders, and airbrushing techniques. Hands-on training of retail products such as: donuts, cakes, breads, rolls, Danishes, cookies and other bakery items. 6-9 PM – Tuesdays - $185.00 – 7 weeks BUSINESS MATH – This course applies students’ basic understanding of mathematics concepts to be applied to business usage. Topics that will be studied are percentages, interest, trade, bank and cash discounts, payroll, time value of money and business loans. 6-8 PM – Thursdays - $125.00 - 8 weeks COMMERCIAL, ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION, TROUBLESHOOTING & REPAIR - Course is for the intermediate electrical student who is, or will be working as an electrician, in a growing industry which is truly in need of qualified and experienced journeymen. Course centers on the skills necessary to troubleshoot problems and facilitate solutions in electrical systems. Students should bring their own hand tools. 6-9 PM – Mondays - $400.00 – 15 weeks COMPTIA A+ CERTIFICATION – CompTIA A+ is the preferred qualifying credential for technical support and IT operational roles. It is about much more than PC repair. Students will gain the knowledge and experience to earn the CompTIA A+ Certification. Class will cover the essential principles of: Hardware-identifying, using, and connecting hardware components and devices. Operating Systems – install and support Windows Operating Systems. Mobile Devices – install and configure laptops and other mobile devices. Networking – explain types of networks and connections including TCP / IP and WIFI. Security – identify and protect against security vulnerabilities for devices and their network connections. Troubleshooting – troubleshoot PC, network and mobile device issues including application security support. Course is a combination of both theory and hands-on practice to become a successful entry-level technician in the information technology field. 6-9 PM – Mon & Tues - $500.00 – 13 weeks
COMPTIA NETWORK+ CERTIFICATION – Course helps develop a career in IT infrastructure covering troubleshooting and configuring and managing networks. Students will gain the knowledge and experience to earn the CompTIA Network+ Certification. Course covers the essential principals of: Networking concepts – explaining the purpose of a variety of networking concepts and implementing them appropriately. Network Operations – using best practices to manage the network, determine policies and ensure business continuity. Infrastructure – determine and explain the appropriate cabling, device and storage technologies. Network Security – summarize physical security and common attacks while securing the wired and wireless troubleshooting methodology and appropriate tools to support connectivity and performance. Course is a combination of both theory and hands on practice. CompTIA Network+ Certification is the gateway to a range of in-demand IT credentials. 6-9 PM – Wed & Thurs - $500.00 – 13 weeks CNC MILLING & TURNING – Course will provide hands-on training in set up, operation, general machine maintenance and G & M code functions. Students will gain knowledge by learning on state of the art industry used equipment. Learn how to generate offsets, load programs, set tool locations and adjust offsets to ensure parts are within tolerance to print specifications. This is a great opportunity for anyone trying to break into a high demand CNC machining field. 6-9 PM – Thursdays - $750.00 – 15 weeks ELECTRIC MOTOR CONTROLS – This course will familiarize the student with two and three wire relay logic and control, motor starters, electrical control systems, troubleshooting methods, diagrams and schematics. 6-9 PM – Tues & Thurs - $400.00 – 10 weeks ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS – Don’t know what it takes to get the lights on when you flip the switch? It is not obvious to the unaided eye. How to choose the right supplies? This course will answer those questions and then some. Starting off with the history of electricity, through generation, transmission and distribution. An overview will be given of how this is done. 6:30-8:00 PM – Tuesday - $100.00 – 6 weeks GENEALOGY – Who do you think you are? With today’s technical tools and good old fashioned detective work let’s unlock the secrets of your family. Students will be using the internet to help uncover the tales of their grandparents and relatives who might be living right around the corner or on the other side of the world. *Basic computer skills are required. 7-9 PM – Tuesdays - $100.00 – 6 weeks HVAC – LEVEL ONE (pre-requisite to Level Two) – This course is designed for the entry level student as well as those currently involved in the trade. The program provides a presentation of the most basic fundamentals required and continues with more advanced theory relating to this field of study. Heating will focus on heat-pump technology. The ultimate aim of this course is to take the mystery out of otherwise confusing material and prepare the student for a fulfilling career in the HVAC industry. 5:30-9:30 PM – Mondays - $550.00 – 15 weeks
HVAC – LEVEL TWO – This course is designed for those who have completed the HVAC – Level 1 Program. The program will continue to focus on basic theory as well as explore troubleshooting techniques. As the program advances, the student will be introduced to concepts related to light commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The objective of the program is to learn concepts applicable to the workplace. 5:30-9:30 PM – Tuesdays - $550.00 – 10 weeks INDUSTRIAL TECHNICIAN TRAINING PROGRAM – Course is designed to provide students with an overview of the types of systems they are likely to encounter when working in the manufacturing or servicing of industrial equipment. Program is designed for students who already have training in one or more technical areas and wish to expand their understanding of other technical disciplines and how they are integrated in industrial equipment and processes. It is recommended that students would have a basic understanding of electrical power systems at a minimum. 6:30-8:30 PM – Wednesday - $350.00 – 10 weeks INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING – Course will focus on painting with watercolor, acrylic, and oil paints. Students will receive multiple opportunities to paint outside as long as weather permits. Subjects for painting will include still life, portraits and figures and landscapes. Class is open to various art styles and focuses on both the process of art and the end product. All skill levels are welcomed, and no previous art experience is needed. Students must provide their own supplies. 6-9 PM – Tuesdays - $150.00 – 5 weeks LOGO & IDENTITY DESIGN – This course will help students generate a business logo and start developing business identity by producing a letterhead, envelope and business card step-by-step. Students will learn how to effectively map out their ideas. Learn the foundation on which you can craft an extraordinary logo and bring something fresh to an existing business or a new business. Learn how to design an eye-catching logo by: generating and sketching design ideas quickly, fonts and text positioning, color and format options, use Adobe Illustrator for creation of logos, set design to press by producing a letterhead, envelope and business card. Upon completion of the course, students will understand mind mapping and Osborn’s checklist, which will help to brainstorm logo ideas, and learn how to create unique symbols, add elements to a word, and use geometric shapes and initials, and position text properly. *Basic computer knowledge and some drawing skills are required. 7-9 PM – Thursdays - $175.00 – 12 weeks MACHINE SHOP FUNDAMENTALS – Course introduces students to the basic fundamentals of precision machining. Students receive instruction regarding proper safety, set-up and operations of machines, as well as applied shop mathematics, correct use of measuring tools and bench working skills. 6-9 PM – Tuesdays - $700.00 – 15 weeks MEDICAL BILLING & CODING – Class is designed for students to become familiar and understand the stages of medical coding and billing, as well as its cycle. Course will provide comprehensive information for the newly introduced ICD-10 Coding, and CPT Coding. Insurances and claims will also be taught. Computer skills are recommended. 6-9 PM – Wednesday & Thursday – $325.00 - 12 weeks
MICROSOFT OFFICE 2016 – LEVEL ONE – beginners – A powerful and flexible suite of application consisting of Word, Word Processing, Excel, Spreadsheet, Power Point Presentation, Outlook email program and Access relational database program. Students will also learn to create, edit and print documents, create spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentation. Students will also learn how to use and configure Outlook email, to retrieve and send email as well as using its calendar and appointment features. 7-9 PM – Tuesdays - $295.00 – 12 Weeks MICROSOFT OFFICE 2016– LEVEL TWO – advanced – Course will cover advanced features of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students will learn how to use the mail merge functions, use existing templates with tips for creating your own, and create macros to speed through repetitive functions, incorporate multiple data sources and import and export data into spreadsheets, use multimedia tools, design features and templates to create a presentation. Students will also receive tips, tricks, and shortcuts to help you work quicker and easier with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 7-9 PM – Thursdays - $295.00 – 12 weeks MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS – Course will explain how a four stroke single and multi-cylinder motorcycle engine operates. How to adjust single and dual overhead valves and how the camshaft system works and is timed with the crankshaft. The course will also cover clutch and brake systems, hydraulic and mechanical. Students will remove and replace front and rear suspension, steering, and rear drive systems, learn how to check fuel, charging and ignition systems. 6-9 PM – Mon & Wed - $450.00 – 12 weeks RECREATIONAL POWER SPORTS (Small Engine Repair) – Learn how to rebuild your small engine equipment. Course will enable students to understand the principles and theory of all two and four stroke cycle internal combustion engines. 6-9 PM – Tues & Thurs - $450.00 – 12 weeks RESIDENTIAL WIRING – Students learn to read building home construction plans, use electrical calculations to estimate and detail circuits for lighting and appliances used for wiring houses. 6-9 PM – Wednesdays - $350.00 – 10 weeks SERVSAFE CERTIFICATION – Class is designed for both first time certifications and certification renewals. Course covers critical principles including: personal hygiene, cross-contamination, time and temperature, receiving and storage, food safety management, training hourly employees and more. Training certification is accepted in all 50 states and is valid for five years. Certification test will be taken on the final class day. Participants must purchase 7th edition Servsafe Manager Book with answer sheet. 6-9 PM – Wednesdays - $125.00 – 6 weeks
WELDING – LEVEL ONE – Beginners – SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING (SMAW)/AKA – STICK WELDING – OXYGEN/ACETYLENE CUTTING (OAC) – Describes the basic principles and characteristics of SMAW welding process while following safety guidelines for set-up and operation of power sources and cutting equipment. Identify the major components of SMAW and OAC equipment and setup. Topics will include basic metallurgy, safety, electrode selection and care, introduction to cutting with the oxygen/acetylene process and an introduction to Plasma Cutting (PAC). Welding on limited thickness plate, student may progress to all positions. Auto darkening helmet and all safety equipment required, see instructor first night. This class is a beginner’s class with 40% theory for advancement into the welding field. 6-9 PM – Mon & Wed - $900.00 – 10 weeks WELDING – LEVEL TWO – Beginners – GAS METAL ARC WELDING (GMAW) AKA – METAL INERT GAS (MIG) AND FLUX CORE ARC WELDING (FCAW) - Describes the basic principles and characteristics of the MIG and FCAW welding process while following safety guidelines for set-up and operation of power sources. Identify the major components of a MIG/FCAW welding setup. Identify MIG and FCAW filler wire and gasses. Weld thin gauge mild steel sheets and limited thickness plate. Auto darkening helmet and all safety equipment required, see instructor first night. This class is 30% theory. 6-9 PM – Tuesdays - $700.00 – 10 weeks FREE ADULT CLASSES IN ESL AND GED PREPARATION Vita Education Services offers free English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) Preparation courses at the Bucks County Technical High School. The ESL courses are for adults who wish to understand, speak, read and write English and learn about American Culture, History, and Government. ABE classes provide instruction in basic reading, writing, and math skills. HSE classes prepare students for the GED and HiSET tests. Program and class assignment will be determined by placement testing and instructor recommendation. 6:30-9 PM – Tuesday & Thursdays Registration – January 7 or January 9, 2020 at 6 PM Placement Test – January 14, 2020 at 6 PM Potential students MUST attend orientation/registration and placement testing in order to attend ESL/High School Equivalency Classes.
