Speakers for ‘Meet the Professionals’ 2018 Talk information Session identifier Victoria Hallum - Diplomacy and International Relations A Victoria Hallum is the Chief International Legal Adviser and Legal Division Manager at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She leads a team of people that negotiate agreements regarding trade, environmental issues and security between New Zealand and other nations. Victoria has also had managerial roles at Callaghan Innovation, a business innovation agency, and at Maritime New Zealand, and has been a Diplomat representing New Zealand in its Embassy in Paris and at the United Nations in New York. Victoria has a personal passion for supporting refugees to settle into New Zealand. Suitable for students interested in Diplomacy, Law, Public Service, International studies, Negotiation, Policy. Catherine Gardner – Police B Dr Catherine Gardner first studied Drama and French at university, but then went on to gain a PhD in Criminology. She has worked for the New Zealand Police for 16 years and is currently the Manager: Case Management. She has the national overview for how the police manage how victims are kept informed, how police officers manager their workload and the technology used to support them. She is currently a non-sworn officer, but has been a police officer in the past including being a Detective Sergeant in the London Metropolitan Police working in Child Protection. Catherine has worked in policing for 29 years and her passion is helping victims of crime and finding ways to have fewer victims of crime. Catherine loves travel and movies and has an unhealthy interest in Harry Potter and Start Wars. She lives with a contrary and cantankerous cat – Rosie. Dr Adam Sims - Psychiatrist C Dr Adam Sims completed a BSc in Psychology and then trained in medicine at the University of Otago. After working as a junior doctor in New Zealand, Ireland and the UK he then returned to New Zealand and specialised in Psychiatry. He has sub specialty qualifications in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry and Old Age Psychiatry. In 2013 he completed a Master in Medical Science through the University of Otago. He currently works at the Capital and Coast District Health Board as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist and Old Age Psychiatrist. He works in Wellington Hospital two days a week, in the community two days a week and at Kenepuru hospital one day a week. He works as a senior lecturer in the department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago coordinating and teaching the first year Psychiatry Registrar teaching program. He is a current member of the New Zealand committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, the New Zealand committee for the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry and chair of the New Zealand Faculty of Consultation Liaison Psychiatrists. When not working he enjoys spending time with his family (three daughters), playing tennis and running. Suitable for students interested in Psychology, Medicine, Academia. Squadron Leader Nama Patel – Intelligence, New Zealand Defence D Nama joined the RNZAF in 2000 as a Navigator, but changed to Intelligence Officer in 2003. She is currently working in Wellington on a project looking at replacing the current P-3K2 Orion aircraft. She has worked with all the RNZAF squadrons, the Army, Navy, as well as militaries from Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and others, both in NZ and overseas. Nama has served overseas in Timor Leste, the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Dubai, and Singapore. Her jobs have included analysis of threats to aircraft missions into Afghanistan, review of international political events, working with United Nations personnel in Timor Leste, leading teams, development of new units, and briefing senior leadership personnel. A recent highlight was 2-years living in Hawaii with her husband; where she worked for the U.S Pacific Command, learnt to scuba dive, and had the opportunity to visit Alaska. Julia Kasper - Scientist E Julia Kasper is an insect specialist, with a PhD in Biology. She currently works for Te Papa where she curates the insect collection and researches about bloodsuckers and pollinators. Prior to this, she was the Principal Entomologist for NZ BioSecure where she played a role in ensuring New Zealand’s mosquito population was under control and was on call for border control when insects were found in the luggage of people entering the country. Julia also reports to the coroner for situations when an expertise in insects is required to help assist with determining the circumstances of a death. Julia is passionate about Science. Suitable for students interested in Science, Biology, Animals, Medicine, Museology. Stefan Korn – Entrepreneur F Stefan Korn is the CEO of Creative HQ, a Wellington business innovation incubator that helps others build brilliant businesses as well as advise Government agencies on how to be more innovative. Stefan is a serial entrepreneur and has started a number of innovative companies himself. He has also given his expertise to help people in third world countries gain financial independence through starting their own small businesses. He has a PhD in artificial intelligence. Suitable for students interested in Business, IT, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Design, Marketing. Juliette Thomson – Engineering, Structural G Juliette Thomson graduated from her Engineering studies at Auckland University in 2014. She currently works as a Structural Engineer for Calibre Consulting. Juliette was the National Chair of the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand’s Committee for Emerging Professionals in 2017. This involved organising events for young engineers to help advance their careers. Juliette also has an interest in gender diversity in the workplace. Suitable for students interested in Women in Leadership, Engineering, Science, Maths.
Ataga’i Esera – Lawyer H Ataga’i Esera both practises law and lectures in law at Victoria University. She has been practising as a family lawyer for over five years and is an Associate at the firm Family Law Specialists in Porirua. Ata’s work here involves, among other things, matters under the Care of Children Act, Domestic Violence Act, Property (Relationships) Act, and the Oranga Tamariki Act. Ata is also a Lawyer for Child and is appointed by the Court to represent children in Family Court proceedings. She is the only Samoan speaking Lawyer for Child in Wellington. Ata lectures in the 300 level law paper Ethics and the Law. Suitable for students interested in Law, Community/Social Work, Academia. Lucy Revill – Lifestyle Blogger I Lucy Revill is the creator of the multi award-winning lifestyle blog ‘The Residents’. ‘The Residents’ showcases quirky, colourful and wonderful aspects of the city of Wellington, with a particular emphasis on beauty, food and style. She has also contributed to a number of local and international magazines and blogs and is growing a repertoire as a speaker/presenter. Lucy manages ‘The Residents’ alongside her role as a Policy Analyst and is a QMC old girl. Suitable for students interested in Design, Journalism, Marketing, Business, Writing, Media. Steph Bensemann – Entrepreneur J Steph Bensemann is an Innovation Specialist at Creative HQ. A recent graduate of Victoria University’s Business School, she started her own company, Filtr, while still a student. She is a partner in a youth-led investment fund, and the former Communications and Marketing Manager at the charity Young Enterprise. She has a passion for fashion and is looking to combine her interests in technology, fashion and business in future ventures. Suitable for students interested in Business, IT, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Design, Marketing.
Gina Grimshaw – Psychologist K Gina Grimshaw is an Associate Professor at the Victoria University of Wellington School of Psychology. She leads the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience laboratory which explores topics relating to emotion as well as how and why people process information differently. Gina is a popular lecturer known for her enthusiasm and passion for her topic. Suitable for students interested in Pyschology, Research, Science, Neuroscience, Academia. Lieutenant Keith Cook - Engineering, New Zealand Defence L Keith Cook grew up in Samoa and Auckland. After a gap year in the UK, he completed a Bachelor of Science/Engineering Degree at Auckland University. Whilst at university he became interested in the Navy. What appealed was the travel, being able to serve New Zealand and being challenged. He joined as a Weapon Engineering Officer. His career highlights to date include representing New Zealand at the 100th Anniversary for ANZAC day in Gallipoli, training with the Royal Navy in the UK and being part of some really interesting projects. Suitable for students interested in GAP programmes, Internationl Relations, Engineering, Science, Maths, Defence. Graduates and students of Victoria University’s Design School M Several Masters students and Graduates of Victoria University’s Design Innovation qualification will speak in this slot. They will be talking about their design projects and how they have had applications in industries such as health and film and have had use in addressing issues such as pollution. The application of 3D printing will also be explored. Suitable for students interested in Design, Technology, IT, Engineering, Medicine, Maths, Art.
Kendra Ross – IT, Cyber security N Kendra Ross is the Co-Founder and Director of DUO, New Zealand’s largest Cyber Security Distributor company, and an employer of IT Engineers. She is on a New Zealand Taskforce for developing skills in cyber security in the country and she co-founded 1stTuesday, New Zealand’s first network for IT security professionals. She is a passionate advocate for getting women into the IT industry, particularly cybersecurity which is a rapidly growing area. Kendra and her company value work/life balance, and Kendra has been able to help out with her children’s sport throughout her career. Suitable for students interested in Women in leadership, Business, IT, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Management, Maths. Carolyn Merryweather – Health Management O Carolyn Merryweather is the Manager of the newly established School of Health at Victoria University of Wellington, which offers programmes in health psychology, health promotion, population health, health policy, health informatics, and health software development. Carolyn studied a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Otago before embarking on a big OE. Though she began training as a medical doctor, she eventually found her niche in educational administration, and loves the working combination of both administration and health. Outside work, Carolyn enjoys getting into the outdoors with her husband, spending time with family and playing board games. Suitable for students interested in Medicine, Maths, Policy, Public service, IT, Management, Health, Academia. Phillippa Harford – Chief Financial Officer P Phillippa Harford is the Chief Financial Officer of Infratil, a company which owns energy, transport, data and social infrastructure businesses. Sarah Speight – International development R Sarah Speight is an International Development Consultant. She works in developing countries to support governments and workers to develop sophisticated agriculture systems and processes. Her work has led her and her family to live and work in Pakistan, India and Chile. In New Zealand Sarah has also been the CEO of the Dairy Women’s Network and has managed large scale corporate dairy farms. Sarah’s agricultural career follows a city upbringing. She has two teenage daughters. Suitable for students interested in Women in Leadership, International relations, Aid, Agriculture, Languages, Management, Consultancy. Medical and dental team, New Zealand Defence S A team of New Zealand Defence Force members, including a field medic, and a dentist will be presenting. Students interested in Defence, Dentistry, Medicine. Nick Humphries – Radiologist T Nick Humphries is a Radiologist for Pacific Radiology and Hutt Hospital. He helps diagnose and treat disease and injury through the use of advanced medical imaging techniques such as CT and MRI. Nick has also completed specialised training in Obstetrics and Paediatrics. He is keen to tell students stories about medical school and can also explain what is involved in becoming specialised beyond graduation. Suitable for students interested in Medicine, Specialisation. Anzak Tindall – Producer, Film U Anzak Tindall is the Executive Producer of the film production company JoyRide Films. Making the most of the amazing New Zealand landscape, JoyRide Films is based in New Zealand but produces work for clients from all over the world. On a daily basis Anzak draws on his creative and problem solving skills. JoyRide Films produces marketing work for corporates such as Vodafone, Mercury Energy, Anchor, Amway and Visa, and their work usually involves some element of adventure as they look for suitable locations for filming. Suitable for students interested in Film, Creativity, Innovation, Marketing, Management, Business.
Ms Brown – NCEA V Ms Brown will cover everything you need to know about NCEA Level 1 and will be able to answer questions about the programme. Suitable for Year 10 students and their families. Ms Brown – IB Diploma W Ms Brown will cover everything you need to know about the Diploma and be able to answer questions about the programme. Suitable for Year 11 students contemplating taking the IB Diploma pathway in Year 12 and 13. Flight Lieutenant Megan Hodges - New Zealand Defence Force Psychologist X Megan Hodges has been in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) for 14 years, and has been a registered psychologist for over 5 years. She initially joined Defence as a Human Resources Officer after completing a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Commerce at Otago University. Megan left the RNZAF for an extended OE and then re-enlisted in the RNZAF to complete a Masters of Arts (Industrial Organisational Psychology) through Massey University. Megan’s current role is based in the Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force and involves research around psychological support to deployments. Megan has been keenly involved in social activities and sports (particularly waterpolo) in the RNZAF. Suitable for students interested in Defence, Psychology, Human Resources, Commerce. Petty Officer Electronics Technician Fiona Millington – Engineering, New Y Zealand Defence Fiona joined the Royal Navy (UK) in 2000 on the Weapon Engineering Artificer Apprenticeship Scheme and gained a Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She has served on board ships in both the UK and New Zealand after emigrating there. She has had a number of adventures, for example working for the GNS Science Volcanology section as a maintaining the monitoring networks around New Zealand volcanoes. Also working for Antarctica NZ as a Science Technician at Scott Base. Passions outside of work include triathlon, outdoor adventure training, medieval re-enactment and scuba diving. Suitable for students interested in Engineering, Trades, Adventure, Science, Geology, Defence.
Kathy McRae – Actor and Director Z Kathy has been directing in New Zealand for over 20 years. Most recently she directed the CIRCA Theatre production of Emily Perkins’ adaptation of ‘A Doll’s House’ by Henry Ibsen. Interestingly her first acting role, was in the film made of Katherine Mansfield’s short story ‘The Doll’s House’ where she played the small child, Kezia. Kathy graduated from Toi Whakaari, and has acted in film, stage and TV. She has both acted and directed for ‘Shortland Street’. Kathy has taught acting and directing as well. Suitable for students interested in Performing Arts, Theatre, Film, Women in Leadership.
