REGISTRATION & RENTALS: Program registration and facility rentals can be done at https://adel.activityreg.com SUBJECT TO CHANGE: With the uncertainty of the Coronavirus pandemic, all programs and information in this guide are fluid and subject to change. SPONSORSHIP: Interested in sponsoring a program? Contact the Parks & Recreation office. Little League Baseball and Softball team sponsorship is $100 which scores your “corporate name” on one team’s uniform and the option for a 3’x8’ sign on the outfield fence line. Sponsor is responsible for supplying sign. PHOTOS: On occasion, our staff may photograph participants at Parks and Recreation programs, events, and activities. These photos are for department use and may be duplicated in city publications, flyers, brochures, etc. VOLUNTEERS: You do not need to be a family member of a participant to volunteer. If you are interested in coaching or helping with a program please contact Nick Schenck or Sadie Mudder at 993-4525. ATHLETIC OFFICIALS: If you are interested in officiating or scorekeeping youth and/or adult sports have a sense of fair play and a solid knowledge of the rules, contact the Park/Rec. Office at 993-4525. Here is an excellent opportunity for players to give back to the game. All applicants will be provided a basic uniform and must be in good health. VANDALISM: Acts of vandalism occur each year to our park facilities and equipment. If you see anyone vandalizing city parks, please call the Adel Police at 993-6723. Together we can keep our parks looking great! CODE OF CONDUCT: Participants, parents, and volunteer coaches are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times and at all programs. ADEL PARK AND REC. BOARD Melissa Heikes (Chair) Kari Johns Patricia Ehrenfried Ryan Steinfeldt Rich Miller Jeremy Brancheau The Park and Recreation Board oversee the Park and Recreation Department. The board makes decisions on the development of the leisure time opportunities and facilities in the community. The board typically meets the first Monday of every month in the Adel City Council Chambers at 6:30pm. The Park and Rec. Board also serve as the City Tree Board. All meetings are open to the public. If you have anything you would like discussed by the Adel Park and Rec. Board, please call the Park and Rec. Director, Nick Schenck, 515-993-4525 in advance of the meeting.
KINNICK-FELLER PARK: 500 North 10th Street Kinnick-Feller is Adel’s largest and oldest city park. Within the 20 acre park you will find a gaga ball pit, four softball fields, football field (where Nile Kinnick played football as a youth), trail path, two tennis courts, the city cemetery, playground equipment, a boat ramp to the river and full park amenities including park benches, grills, 3 shelters, restrooms and a water source. You may also enjoy a paved 1/2 mile fitness path around the park. Kinnick-Feller Park is located at the North end of both 9th and 10th Streets. EVANS PARK: 700 12th Street Evans Park is 14 acres and located on South 12th Street (go south on South 11th Street to Cassidy Curve). It has a paved walking path, playground equipment including an ADA swing, picnic shelter, grills, basketball court, drink- ing fountain, restrooms, 3 sand volleyball courts, and a disc golf course. The newest addition to the park is a mantis zipline. Children can sit or stand on the cart as it zips along the 125-foot cable. Evans Park also has a lot of open space for pick-up games of all types. ISLAND PARK AND SOCCER PARK: 2400 Nantucket Road Island Park in Adel provides visitors beautiful green space, restrooms, picnic sites, fire pits, modern playground equip- ment, soccer fields, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, and a renovated shelter. It is also a great place to fish and boat and boasts a portage/boat ramp to navigate the low-head dam. To get to Island Park, cross the bridge on the North edge of Adel and take the first right off of highway 169. Take an immediate right on to a paved road. NEW SOUTHBRIDGE PARK: Meadow/Roebling Road Intersection Adel’s newest neighborhood park features a playground that has swings, slides, modern merry-go-round and a mu- sic making piece. Park benches will be added. The play- ground also has inclusive and ADA compliant components making it accessible for all! BAILEY’S GROVE PARK: Intersection of Bailey’s Grove Dr. and Shelby Dr. One of Adel’s newer parks was completed October of 2017 and has a unique technology feature called Biba! Biba is an interactive app that provides playground games that turn equipment into “smart” play structures. Choose from a va- riety of games including Dino Dig, Treasure Hunter, Butter- fly Bounty and more! Just download the Biba Playground app to play today! The park also features sitting benches, swings, 2 separate playgrounds, a perimeter sidewalk around the park, a Little Free Library, and trash receptacles.
BRICKYARD PARK: South 18th St. and Brickyard Road A 3-acre park located along the Raccoon River Valley Bike Trail that features a small picnic shelter, a bike rack, benches, picnic table, trash cans, prairie and tree plant- ings. This park is a very popular community lunch spot. This park was developed as a partnership between the City of Adel, United Brick and Tile Company, Dallas Coun- ty Soil and Water Conservation District, and Dallas County Conservation. PEDAL PLAZA: Highway 169 at Raccoon River Trail crossing A recently renovated trail stop along the Raccoon Riv- er Valley Trail. Amenities include a small plaza space, information kiosk, benches, drinking fountain and bike re- pair station. COMMUNITY STAGE AND PAVILLION: 10th and Main Street A gathering place for community events that includes pic- nic tables, green space, oak tree plantings, and a memorial wall. This is the site of many Adel community events. CLOVER VALLEY PARK: South 14th Street An undeveloped 3-acre park full of greenspace tucked behind existing residential properties. Future park development plans include trails and benches. PEOPLE AND DOGS IN THE PARKS AND CEMETARIES The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing a safe and qual- ity park system for the Adel Community. Park rules exist to ensure the park visitors have a pleasant experience. Two specific park rules that need to be remembered when taking a dog to a City Park: 1. Dogs are to be leashed at all times 2. Pet owners are asked to pick up and properly dispose of their pet’s waste. Appreciation and thanks are extended to responsible pet owners who, along with their pets, respect other park users and the park system. Our convenient Dogi-Pot Stations have bags for pet waste in them and are located in all city parks. Thank-You! TOBACCO-FREE PARK POLICY Tobacco use is prohibited in designated areas of City of Adel parks, trails, and outdoor recreational facilities and all public building grounds at all times. Desig- nated park areas include: restrooms; athletic fields and in the spectator areas of athletic fields during a sporting event; tennis courts; disc golf courses; play- ground areas; recreational trail rest areas; and any pavilions, shelters and bench- es located in a park or on a public ground. Tobacco-free signs shall be posted in all areas to conform to the requirements of Section 142D.6 Code of Iowa
COMMUNITY ICE RINK: 10th & Main Street Located at the Community Stage & Pavilion, an outdoor temporary ice rink will be set up each winter season. Dates of use will be subject to weather. The ice rink is open to the public during regular park hours. ARCHERY PARK: 1505 Old Portland Road Adel has its very own Archery Course located just outside of Adel at 1505 Old Portland Road. The Archery Range features Bull Dog Targets, picnic tables, parking area and a portable restroom during the seasonal months. Annual Archery Range permits are available for purchase at Adel City Hall. Costs are as follows: Adult Resident $20, Adult Nonresident $25, Youth Resident $10, Youth Nonresident $15. ADEL DOG PARK: 1800 South 15th Street This 2-acre park features obstacles and a fenced-in area for our 4-legged friends. Dogi-Pot waste receptacle sta- tions are on-site for the public’s use. All dogs must be up-to-date on current immunizations and have a City of Adel pet license prior to using the facility. LITTLE LEAGUE BALLFIELDS: 7th & Grove Street This park features 3 baseball diamonds for various age groups, a concession stand, batting cages, a water source, restrooms, and bleachers. DISC GOLF COURSE: 700 12th Street The 9-hole disc golf course was made possible by the Adel Rotary Club. The ability to move the baskets allows for an alternative course. The course is located in Evan’s Park and free to use. TRAILS: A network of trails run throughout the City of Adel. A few areas to highlight are the trails around Kinnick-Feller Park, Evans Park, and the Southbridge community as well as the Raccoon River Valley trail. The Parks and Recreation Department have continued plans to grow and connect paths throughout town. An additional 2 miles of trails will be added over the next 5 years. Get out and explore! TREE PLANTING RECOGNITION PROGRAM: The Adel Parks and Recreation Department welcomes tree lovers to donate a tree for the community’s parks. You could recognize a retirement, anniversary, birth, or any other civic-minded purpose. Due to special requests, we have set up guidelines for persons wishing to plant a tree in any of the city parks in Adel. Please contact Nick Schenck, Park and Rec. Director, for these special guidelines. TREE PLANTING APPROVAL According to Chapter 151 of the City Code, trees to be planted in the right- of-way between the sidewalk and street must receive written permission. After selecting a tree from the official street tree species list for the City of Adel, the City Tree Board will review the request. PARK SHELTERS, GAZEBO, COMMUNITY STAGE & PAVILION The following locations can be reserved for any outdoor events: Kinnick-Feller Gazebo, Kinnick-Feller North Shelter, Kinnick-Feller South Shelter, Evans Park Shelter, and Island Park Shelter, Community Stage & Pavilion. They serve as a great place for meetings, weddings, birthday parties, family reunions, picnics, or other outdoor events. Facilities are open for rental from mid-April through mid-October. Additional information, availability, and reservations can be made online at adel.activityreg.com or in person at Adel City Hall. FEES: Resident fees are $30 plus $5/additional hour with a max daily fee of $60. Nonresident fees are $40 plus $5/additional hour with a max daily fee of $70. Reservations start at 4 hours. If electricity is needed at the Community Stage & Pavilion, an additional $20 fee will be applied. There is no charge for local nonprofit/civic organizations. RULES & REGULATIONS: It is the individuals or organizations responsibility to maintain order among the individuals attending the event. Participants are required to obey all park rules and are responsible for damage to park property. No kegs are glass bottles are allowed. It is the individuals or organizations responsibility to assure the park is cleaned up following the event. SOUND PERMITS: Please note that all outdoor event rentals with amplified sound or music may require a sound permit for an additional $50. Please contact Adel City Hall at 515-993-4525 to confirm. Sound permits must go through an approval process. ADEL BALL FIELD PRACTICE TIME Adel ball fields are in very high demand during the youth baseball, softball, and adult league seasons. To meet every users’ needs, field priority is as follows: Adel Park and Rec. programs, Adel Park and Rec. teams, any other users. FEES: Adel Park & Rec teams are free. Non-Park and Rec teams are $15 per 1.5- hour session per field RULES & REGULATIONS: Teams are limited to 1 session in any given day and 2 sessions per 5-day period. RESERVATION: Online at adel.activityreg.com. Will open for season on April 12 for non-park and rec teams. Remaining months will open one month prior on the 1st. BALL FIELD TOURNAMENT RENTALS Adel City Ballfields can be rented for youth or adult softball and baseball tournaments. Please contact the Park and Rec. Department for pricing.
NEW BEAN BAG LEAGUE We are bringing the classic yard game to the parks and rec- reation line-up. Find a partner and get in a couple practice throws before league play begins this fall. Must be 18 or older. FEE: $30 per team LOCATION: Kinnick-Feller Park WHEN: Thursdays @ 6pm, September 17 - October 22 DEADLINE: September 9 ADULT COED INDOOR VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE Stay active this winter by playing some volleyball with your friends! Teams must have an equal number of men and women on the court. Six weeks of league play followed by an end-of-season tournament. No games will be played on Super Bowl Sunday. FEE: $180 per team LOCATION: ADM High School South Gym WHEN: Sunday Evenings, January 10 – March 7 CHILDCARE: Children are welcome! A babysitting service is available for $1.00 per child while games are played. DEADLINE: December 18 OVER 30 MEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUE Lace up your old sneakers and hit the hardwood! This is a call your own league. Participants will be divided up into teams. Kurt Moyer will help facilitate the league, but registration will be done at adel.activityreg.com. FEE: $20 per person (includes t-shirt) LOCATION: ADM District Administration Center WHEN: Sunday Evenings, November 1 – February 14 DEADLINE: October 23 NEW ACTIVE ELDERS You’re never too old to have some fun! This program is targeted towards the 60+ population looking for an outlet to get out and social- ize. A variety of low impact activities from yard games and modified sports to board games and cards, there are options for all. Masks are encouraged. Hand sanitizer will be available. FEE: Free LOCATION: ADM District Administration Center Gym WHEN: Mondays 9-10am, November 2 – December 21 OPEN GYM Recreational open gym time is a great opportunity to get out of the house during the cold months. Come out and walk, run, play basketball, shuffleboard, socialize, etc. FEE: Free LOCATION: ADM District Administration Center Gym WHEN: 9-11am Monday, Wednesday, Friday, November 2 – April 2 LOOKING FOR A TEAM? VIRTUAL KIDDY KEYS Kiddy Keys is a fun, innovative, and energetic program that teaches music and piano skills to preschool children ages 2.5-5. A piano or keyboard is suggested, but not required. SPRING YOUTH SOCCER Spring Soccer is offered by the ADM Soccer Club to area youth of all ages. Games are played on weekends at the Island Park Soccer Complex. Most games will be played at the Adel Softball Complex in Kinnick-Feller Park, as well as at surrounding communities. The Adel Kiwanis has created a program to assist ADM families by helping cover some or all of the participation fees or uniform costs for their k-8 child who participates in ADM activities. Qualifying activities include band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, dance, football, gymnastics, scouts, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball among others. The Every Kid Plays! Program will re- imburse up to $200 per child for those families that are having financial difficul- ties or otherwise experiencing tough times. For more information, please go to Adelkiwanis.org. 11
NEW GROCERY CART RACES Help us stock our local food bank heading into the colder months and holiday season! Participants race against each other through the course until a champion is crowned! Competitors are encouraged to “decorate” their cart and dress up. Pre-registration is required. Fees will be collected the day of event. FEE: $25 worth of grocery/personal care items OR $25 cash LOCATION: Adel Family Aquatic Center Parking Lot WHEN: Saturday, October 3 starting at 10am AGE: 12 – 100+ DEADLINE: September 30 PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST Calling all creative carvers! Make a Jack-O-Lantern masterpiece and take a spooky picture with it. Submit your photo to the Adel Park/Rec. office or email it to Sadie Mudder at smudder@adeliowa.org. Please include name and contact phone num- ber. All contestants will be featured on our Facebook. Winners will be notified the week after Halloween. FEE: Free DEADLINE: October 31 BEGGAR’S NIGHT Adel will establish the date to celebrate Halloween with Beggar’s Night during the October City Council meeting. Please keep the following in mind: • Dress children in bright clothing and carry a blinking flashlight or other noticeable device • Be careful with full facial masks so not to block line of sight • Parents assist little-ones • Drivers follow all traffic signs, drive slowly, and look out for ghouls! THANKSGIVING FREE-THROW TURKEY TOSS A fun holiday family event! Each team must consist of one parent and one child from the same family. Teams will shoot 30 free throws (15 per person) from the free throw line. Competition will be divided up into 5 age divisions (ages 8-18). The winning team from each division will receive a gift certificate for a free turkey! No pre-registration required. FEE: Free LOCATION: ADM District Administration Center Gym WHEN: November 21 at 2:00 pm NOTES FROM THE NORTH POLE Sign up to receive a letter from Santa mailed directly to your child. It will come in an envelope with Santa’s name and re- turn address in the corner. A unique idea for all of your niec- es, nephews or grandchildren no matter where they live. FEE: $6 (Maximum fee of $18 per family) DEADLINE: December 11 SNOWMAN CONTEST Bundle up and head outside to build your best snowman. Take a picture of your creation and submit it to Sadie at smudder@adeliowa.org. All snowmen will be featured on our Facebook page and a prize will be awarded to the most creative snow sculptor! FALL/WINTER Youth Basketball Referee: Games are played on Saturdays from November-February. Includes both boys’ and girls’ games from grades 1-6. Must be at least 15 years old. Pay is $20/game. Scorekeeper: Games are played on Saturdays from November-February. Includes both boys’ and girls’ games from grades 1-6. Must be at least 15 years old. Pay is $15/game. Gym Supervisor: Help with the set-up and tear down of gyms and oversee activities. Games are played on Saturdays from November-February. Includes both boys’ and girls’ bas- ketball games from grades 1-6. Must be at least 18 years old. Starting pay is $12.50/hour. Childcare Provider: Watch and entertain children as their parents play indoor volleyball. Games are on played on Sunday evenings from January through Mid-March. Must be at least 16 years old. Starting pay is $12.00/hour. SPRING/SUMMER Lifeguards: The Adel Family Aquatic Center looking for certified life- guards to guard and teach swim lessons. For more infor- mation on how or where to get certified, contact Sadie at smudder@adeliowa.org. Must be at least 15 years old by the start of the season. Starting pay is $9.00/hour. Opportu- nities for advancement and increased pay. Admissions: Work the front desk and sell season and daily passes to the Adel Family Aquatic Center. Must be at least 15 years old. Starting pay is $8.50/hour. Concessions: Serve up a tasty treat at the Adel Family Aquatic Center or ballfields. Must be at least 15 years old. Starting pay is $8.50/hour. Site Supervisor: Oversee various parks and recreation activities like youth baseball/softball and adult volleyball/softball. Duties include set-up, record scores, supervise activity, and tear-down. Must be at least 18 years old. Starting pay is $12.50/hour. Youth Softball Umpires: Games are played from Mid-May through Mid-June. Must be at least 15 years old and have knowledge of the game. Pay is $35/game. Parks Maintenance: Help maintain the city parks and facilities throughout the spring/summer season. Duties include mowing, weed-eating, basic maintenance of buildings and machinery and other duties as assigned. Must be at least 18 years old. Starting pay is $12.00/hour. Questions or ready to apply? 1. REGISTRATION for all 2020-2021 Fall/Winter programs will be taken on-line by visiting https://adel.activityreg.com 2. PRE-REGISTRATION is required for all programs unless noted. Registration is done on a first come, first serve basis. Waiting lists will be formed when programs are full. 3. PLEASE KEEP A RECORD OF PROGAMS IN WHICH YOU ENROLL. You will not be notified about your program unless there is a change made or it is canceled. 4. NO REFUNDS will be given after the first event (if a one-time event or pro- gram), or after the second class meeting. Programs with insufficient numbers will be canceled and a refund given. Adel Park and Rec. reserves the right to cancel or combine activities. 5. POSTPONEMENT of activities due to inclement weather will be announced via E-mail or telephone notification. 6. ACCIDENTS/INSURANCE by their very nature, many park and rec. programs involve body contact, physical exertion, emotional stress, etc. Registrants in any programs or users of any park/rec. facility assume risk of injury by partici- pation in said activity or facility. 7. There will be a $20.00 service charge on all returned checks. 8. SCHOLARSHIPS are available to help cover program fees. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Office for additional information or an application. CLASS SIZES AND DEADLINES Some classes and activities may have specific staffing and supply requirements. Adel Park and Rec. therefore reserves the right to limit class sizes or create signup deadlines in the best interest of the participants. To avoid missing out or forcing a class or activity to be canceled, Adel Park and Rec. requests you sign-up early and by any stated deadlines. The Adel Parks and Recreation Department would like to publicly thank the Adel DeSoto Minburn School System for the use of the various schools and facilities for our programs. Without their support and cooperation, many of our programs could not happen!
