An Abundant Life Remembering Greg Olson Our readers have enjoyed Chaplain’s Corner Column in each issue for the past several years. Chaplain Greg bestowed us with rich wisdom and humor, delivering encouragement and refreshment each month. Greg touched lives everywhere he went On January 26, 2022, following a 12-year battle with kidney cancer, Gregory Robert Olson changed his address from this earth to heaven. Greg’s life impacted many people throughout his 71 years. Greg’s life verse from the Bible was John 10:10, which says, “I come that you might have life and have it abundantly – to the fullest!” All who knew him well say he really, really believed it. Greg’s early years were spent in North Dakota, fishing and visiting his cousin’s family farms. At the age of 9 he moved with his family to Omaha, Nebraska. In Jr. High Greg attended a Christian summer camp and on his way home received his call to ministry. In college he quickly became known as the guy on campus “who knew God like he talked to Him this morning.” Upon graduating Greg became a Youth Director at a church in Minnesota. While there, he launched “Vacations with a purpose,” where he led mission teams across the Midwest and other parts of the country. Greg shepherded many At this same time Greg started Life Discovery, a ministry devoted to helping others heal from loss. Many WV residents have attended Greg’s Healing from Loss seminars over the years. Greg’s eulogy during his memorial service on February 6 included what was lovingly dubbed “Greg-isms.” Here are a few that reveal why he was a gift to so many: “If you are going to apologize for your tears, then you have to apologize for your laughter.” “You’ve got to feel it to heal it.” “Work on your character, not your reputation.” Greg and Jeane Olson “It is none of your business what someone else thinks of you.” “What is your God story?” He also formed the Inter Collegiate Fellowship Renewal (ICFR), a “Grace is the empowering presence of God that enables us to ministry which served college students in 5 states and created and become the person God sees when He looks at us.” sent out international ministry teams, while also raising up young people to go into a pastoral or fulltime missionary role. Sandra Evans shared this, upon hearing of Greg’s passing: In 1995, after a stint selling real estate, Greg was invited to lead the single adults at the Community Church of Joy in Glendale, Arizona. “This is so very sad to hear. I always enjoyed reading his gems Upon becoming the Director of Pastoral Care, Greg dubbed the of wisdom. I especially enjoyed the following column: space “The Oasis,” where many lives were healed and transformed In the May 2018 issue of the Westbrook Village Living during the 10 years he was there. In 2005 Greg accepted an offer magazine, Chaplain Greg wrote, to develop the Spiritual Care department at Banner Thunderbird ‘With all my heart I wish Cheers (TV show) was just around the Medical Center. After completing the necessary schooling to corner from my house...I want to hear them yell my name when I become a Board Certified Chaplain, he soon became the Director walk through the door--"Hi Greg!"...I want to hear them talk about of Spiritual Care, shepherding many chaplains on the Banner team. life or problems or nothing at all...I'm sure glad that God knows our name and is always glad when we come. Cheers!’ This article touched my heart as it is both light and profound.”

Fine Arts Club Featured Member Artist Kathleen Eaton – As interviewed by Tony Oldham When did you move to WV and how long have you been a member of the Fine Arts Club? My husband’s family has lived in Westbrook Village for over 20 years. We began staying for the winter months about 10 years ago, and became permanent residents this year. I think I’ve been a member of the Fine Arts Club for 4-5 years. What do you enjoy most about being part of the Fine Arts club? It’s wonderful to be connected with local artists who share the joy of being creative. There is a fabulous art show every March (this year March 12-13) that is organized by the Fine Arts Club. It really highlights the many talents that are here in Westbrook Village. What other art related organizations are/have you been affiliated with in your quest to be an artist within the last 5 years? I’m also a member of the Sonoran Arts League, National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society, American Women Artists, and Oil Painters of America. When did you get involved doing fine art and what was the greatest influence to finding your fine arts path (e.g. an individual, a workshop, a job experience, etc). I’ve worked in creative fields all my life, but it wasn’t until recently that I finally pursued fine art oil painting. I’m an author of a series of quilt books and was a Top Right: Portrait of Tilly Above: Kathleen's painting, graphic designer for many years. When I decided it was time to dedicate myself entitled Psalm 42 Middle Right: Lee Tregurtha by Kathleen Eaton to painting, I took workshops that were taught by very talented artists such as Daniel Gerhartz, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Nancy Guzik, and more. But the best advice I can give is to just paint as often as you can, and connect with those who share the joy of painting. It doesn’t come naturally to me. I work hard at it! Currently what is your primary medium(s), style and focus? I love painting pet portraits in oils! Pets have such wonderful personalities. And oil paint lends itself well to the semi-impressionistic style that I’ve been developing in my figurative and other work. It’s a joy to capture moments that will be enjoyed for generations. Describe 1 or 2 of your highest artistic achievements (e.g. arts degree, awards, etc). and why these are so special to you. I’m grateful for the galleries that represent my work, which include Xanadu Gallery in Pinetop, AZ, Fine Line Designs Gallery in Door County, WI, and Posterity Gallery in Grosse Point, MI. I’m proud to have had a solo exhibit this past summer at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI, and have enjoyed a number of awards in various exhibits. WATER IN THE DESERT SOUTHWEST with WVA by Randy Zellers, Service Direct Landscape (SDL) As we know, the cost of water will not decrease during extended drought conditions in the West, so communities must choose how much water can be distributed to the landscape. Turf is the largest water user in the landscape. Turf uses 4 times the amount of water annually than trees and shrubs. Eventually, small decorative, but not functional pieces of turf, will need to be eliminated due to difficulty in watering without runoff. There have been large strides in the quality and look of artificial turf. This option saves water, labor and material costs of maintaining live turf. We often are asked for recommendations on run times and • Turf: 4 to 5 days per week for 25-45 minutes for rotor frequencies on irrigation systems by our clients.
