CAO – Central Applications Office • Processes applications for all Irish Colleges and Universities. • Students received the CAO Handbooks on Thursday last. • Up to 1400 courses in HEI’s will be listed • Students need to research these courses • Useful Websites – CAO.ie, Qualifax.ie, CareerPortal.ie, HEI Websites • Visit Colleges / Virtual College Tour / Guest Speakers to the school – Online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams 6

CAO – Central Applications Office 1. College Entry Requirements • For example, to attend NUI Galway, you need a Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 Level in the Leaving Certificate. 2. Course Requirements • To study Engineering in NUI Galway, you need Irish, English, Mathematics – H4, a laboratory science subject (i.e. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or Agricultural Science) or Technology, and any two other subjects recognised for entry purposes. 3. Points • Each course has a minimum points requirement. • IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO RESEARCH THE COLLEGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND COURSE REQUIREMENTS. ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE SATISFIED THESE WILL YOUR POINTS BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. 8
CAO – Central Applications Office The Points System • Points rise in accordance with spaces and demand. • The Points total is calculated from the 6 best subjects. • Bonus points are awarded for Honours Maths, 25 extra points. 9
The Offer Process • When examination results are released in August they are entered into the CAO computer. • The computer checks each applicant’s results. For each course the applicant has applied for, the computer first determines if the applicant has the minimum entry requirements for the course. • If the applicant meets the minimum entry requirements for the course, the applicant’s points are calculated for this course choice. • All eligible applicants are then placed in a list, in order of the points they 10 achieved, for each course that they applied for.

Accepting the Offer • Normally given 10 days to accept the offer but very important to check the deadline date given with the offer. • If offered Level 8 and Level 6/7 offer, accepting one automatically rejects the other. • Rejecting an offer does NOT guarantee that you will get another – Think carefully! 12
Timetable of Events • 5th November 2020 - CAO Opens Online • 20th January (17:15) - Apply online by this date to avail of the discounted application fee of €30. • 1st February - Normal closing date for applications. • 5th February (new) - Online facility to amend course choices becomes available (€10 Fee) • 23rd February - HPAT Test - Undergraduate Entry to Medicine • 1st March - Closing date for final completion of online HEAR/DARE forms - Closing date for amending course choices • 1st April - Latest date for HEAR/DARE supporting documentation to arrive in CAO • 5th May - Online Change of Mind facility becomes available (Free) • 1st July (17:15) - Change of Mind closes • Mid August 2021 - LC Results issued Visit • August 2021 - TBC - Round 1 offers available online www.cao.ie • August 2021 - TBC - Round 2 offers available • Sept 2021 - TBC - Round 3 offers available 13
