Weather Watch I said in last months article that every now and again Mother Nature likes to remind us of her power. Well on Friday 18th February it was our turn as Storm Eunice hit. Eunice was well forecast. The storm was named on Monday 14th (along with Storm Dudley which mainly affected the north) and the first warnings were issued. At this time Eunice didn’t exist, but meteorological models had already predicted its development and likely track into the UK and northwest Europe. As the event got nearer and confidence increased warnings were upgraded to Amber, then finally to Red for parts of the SW and SE UK. Red weather warnings are rarely issued, only used for the highest impact events. To issue two for the same event shows how dangerous this storm was. Although we sat just outside the Red warning area, we certainly felt the power of Eunice. At eleven am the observation site at North Wyke recorded at gust of 82 mph, one of the strongest seen anywhere in the UK. Needles on the Isle of Wight recorded a gust of 122 mph, which if verified will be the strongest ever. Although here in South Zeal we seemed to get away quite lightly, I know many in Sticklepath, South Tawton, Belstone and Throwleigh were left without power for hours, and in some cases days. Fallen trees caused travel disruption, schools were closed, damage was done to property, but thankfully I heard no reports of anyone being injured or killed locally. I hope this was the case. Eunice was the most powerful storm to hit the southern UK for decades, possibly since the infamous storm of October 1987. Sadly 17 people lost their lives across the UK and Europe, and the storm caused an estimated £1.5 billion in damage across northwest Europe. Without those warnings though it could have been much worse. Away from Eunice February was another mild month completing a mild winter with temperatures across the UK 1 to 1.5C above the 30-year average. Despite a wet February, winter as a whole was slightly drier than average, but was also duller than average here in the southwest. Perhaps the most notable feature of winter 5
2021-22 was not only the lack of snow, but also the lack of frost, with only 14 recorded here throughout the whole three-month period. Summary for February 2022 (difference from average in brackets) Temperature (°C): Rainfall (mm): Mean 7.1 (+1.7) Total for period 169.8 (144%) Mean Minimum 4.1 (+1.5) Wettest day 31.5mm on 16th Wet days 22 Mean Maximum 9.9 (+1.7) Dry days 6 Minimum -0.5 on 11th Maximum 12.4 on 19th Air frosts 4 (-2) Meet Your Local Councillor After so much delay caused by the pandemic our local coffee mornings in Belstone, South Tawton and Sticklepath have restarted. I will be attending the regular coffee mornings once monthly. This will offer a chance for local people to have an informal chat with me about any West Devon Borough Council issue that I can assist with. If more privacy is required, we can arrange that separately. The timetable will be; South Tawton 1st Friday of the month. Belstone second Thursday of the month Sticklepath 3rd Wednesday of the month. Please come along and meet me if you can - Cllr Lynn Daniel Dawn Chorus Walk at Belstone The first dawn chorus walk around Belstone, followed by breakfast in the Village Hall, was held in May 2003; 30 people came along and 36 different species were seen or heard. That set the annual pattern until the event was cancelled during the first Covid lockdown in 2020, when I turned to posting short films on YouTube so people could still enjoy the songs of blackcaps, robins, song thrushes and the rest. Now, the real walk is back. Led as usual by me, it leaves Belstone Village Hall at 5.30am on Saturday 30 April and follows a varied route around the parish, through woods, across fields, along lanes and over the open moor. As well as the expected species maybe we will hear what I call the ‘goose bird’, 6
a strange four-note honking that has been puzzling Belstone folk for three years or more – actually, I do know which bird it is but I’m not telling here. Wear your walking boots for the rough bits and bring your binoculars and bird-identifying apps, but please leave your four-legged friends at home. We should be back at the Hall for an ‘all-you-can-eat’ breakfast by 8am. Suggested donations of £2.50 for the walk or £6 for the walk and breakfast will be gratefully received for Hall funds. Chris Walpole Belstone Cricket Club There’s a lot of pre-season work going on at Rew Meadow. As anyone driving past this winter can hardly have failed to notice the moles have been very active, luckily mostly outside the boundary line but still a nuisance as the thrown up stones can blunt the gang mowers. The collected soil from the molehills will be useful to fill in the many rabbit holes all over the outfield. Storm Eunice did some damage on 18 February, flipping over the score- hut and ripping the roof and sides off the lean-to shelter where we park the tractor and pitch roller. On the actual cricket front the Sunday afternoon North Devon League Division One program starts on 15 May with a home game against Westleigh. The Sunday before that, 8 May, we play at home against Holsworthy in a new competition, the North Devon League Cup. New players are always welcome, call or email skipper Matt Dennis (07813 898863, matt.dennis1@tiscali.co.uk or me (01837 840498, chris.walpole1@outlook.com). Last season youngsters cricket took off in a big way with around 50 All Stars (5-8 year olds) and Dynamos (8 to 11) having fun on Friday evenings, with Activator Richard Drake in charge. It’s all happening again this summer with nearly 30 kids booked in already. Plenty of room for more, so head to www.allstarscricket.co.uk or www.dynamoscricket.co.uk to register with us. The sessions begin on Friday 6 May and run until Friday 24 June. Last but not least for all you car boot lovers here are the three dates for the Saturday sales this year: 28 May, 9 July and 3 September. Chris Walpole 7
Eden Project Founder To Open Exhibition at Stone Lane Gardens. Artists have only 1 month remaining to enter a prestigious sculpture exhibition that is set to be opened by Sir Tim Smit in July. Stone Lane Gardens are opening their doors once again to up and coming artists as part of their annual Ashburner prize. The open call for entries will close on March 31st 2022. Sir Tim Smit, a founder of internationally recognised innovative Eden Project, will open the exhibition to the public in July 2022. RHS partner garden Stone Lane shares The Eden Projects ethos of preservation and cultivation. As well as being a beautiful sanctuary, the gardens are of particular scientific value and have over 69 different types of birch trees. The exhibition will invite emerging artists with a connection to the South West to submit proposals for work and once selected will be displayed throughout the gardens, immersed in the natural surroundings. The panel of judges is made up of gardens trustee Sandy Lipo, internationally renowned ceramic sculptor Sandy Brown and author and academic Penny Florence. This year marks the 30th anniversary of an annual exhibition at Stone Lane Gardens. The Ashburner Prize builds on the legacy of founders June and Kenneth Ashburner. This year, the judges have decided to assign the theme of ‘connectivity’ to the exhibition. This theme is intended to be interpreted by each artist. All works within the exhibition will be open to sale and the winner of the Ashburner Prize will be awarded £1000 prize money. For a chance to enter the 2022 Stone Lane Exhibition, sell your art there, and win the £1000 prize, artists can submit photographs of their work and details of a proposed piece including dimensions and weight if possible here - www.stonelanegardens.com/2022/01/ sculpture/ 8

sticklepath easter treasure trail Complete the trail, find all the letters to claim your treasure X PH PH Church or download from the Sticklepath Community Church Facebook page, @SticklepathCC. To collect your prize, bring your completed Treasure Trail to Sticklepath Village Hall for coffee and cake on: Friday 15th April between 10am and 12noon Fun for all the family! Organised by Sticklepath Community Church Taw River Meditation Group We will be meeting again in person in the upper room in the Church House, South Tawton, from Wednesday, April 6th, 2022 - 6.30 -8.30 pm. This group largely follows the Plum Village practice of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Any queries, please contact Alison on 01837 849085. Sticklepath Village Workday Sticklepath held its first Workday in two years on a lovely bright Sunday at the end of February. More than twenty people turned out for an enjoyable, social morning. The majority were clearing gorse on Sticklepath Moor, warmed by a roaring bonfire and 11
under the capable leadership of Dartmoor Parks Ranger Ian Brooker. A small party tackled the job of pollarding trees in the playing field. With both tasks finished by mid-day, all enjoyed refreshments and lardy cake supplied courtesy of Steve & Pam Matthews. It was generally agreed that the restoration of this previously annual Workday acknowledged the possibility of a return to ‘normality’ after the upheaval of Covid, and gave hope that the coming year will see more social functions return to the village. Belstone Youth Group made the most of pancake day… we had fun in the village hall making, flipping & then decorating our pancakes with lots of delicious toppings. We also had a pancake hunt afterwards! Well done everyone!! St Mary's Church Heritage Centre Sticklepath April has arrived and with it, the promise of lighter evenings, busy birdsong and gardens bursting into life. The church grounds are looking lovely with masses of primroses and daffodils, following on from the wonderful early display of snowdrops. We are anticipating the small team of volunteers will be able to resume those tasks left on hold with the onset of Winter, now the garden is less soggy, and we are always looking for more helpers! The visitor's book is proof that more people have been passing through during the past few months, which is when we usually expect a drop in numbers. All positive signs that the Heritage feature is a real point of interest. Village Praise will be held on 3rd April at 10.30am and the 12
monthly Communion service will take place at 8.30am on Sunday 24th. Please see the Beacon for times of services on Easter Day in the locality. St Mary's will be open every day, providing a quiet space for reflection and private prayer. Carol Johns, Church Steward Sticklepath Phoenix Group.......March meeting. AGM followed by The Sticklepath WI and Phoenix Archives..... Mike Gilbert Our AGM was quickly done and dusted. Committee and Chair elected without a fuss. Then on to a spirited and fascinating talk from our very own reclusive archivist, Historic stories and facts about the WI, which later became The Phoenix Group. All gleaned from archived documents and slides, carefully housed in the village hall. Immensely enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you Mike This is followed by the meeting in April...History of Reddaways Removals, South Zeal presented by Michael Clinch. We meet at 7.15pm at Sticklepath Village Hall on the third Tuesday in the month. Visitors and new members welcome. For more information contact Lorinda Legge 01837 840326 or any member of the committee. The Moorland Group It was agreed after much discussion at the March meeting of The Moorland Group (formerly South Zeal W.I.) that the group would fold as from 10th March, 2022. This was a sad decision to have to make and we shall I am sure miss our monthly meetings. However, it was also agreed that we will continue to get together on the second Thursday of each month for lunch at a local cafe or pub so that we can catch up on our news (and views!!). I think that it is worth mentioning that Vera White has been a member for sixty years!! Our longest serving Committee member. Thank you Vera! Jacqueline Yeates 13

The Sector Ranger for our area, as many of you will know, is Ian Brooker and he has four Voluntary Wardens assisting him covering different parts of his patch of Dartmoor. This year there is a complete change of the volunteer team. I have thoroughly enjoyed being one of the team, covering Sticklepath and South Tawton parishes for twenty-six years, but have now discovered that the hills have got steeper and higher, especially when carrying a spade and mattock or strimmer! Similarly Ian Soloman has put in stirling service for twenty-one years covering the Belstone area. Gidleigh/Throwleigh and Okehampton areas also became vacant during the last year. The new Voluntary Wardens are:- 14

Church House, as many of you know, is an historic 15th century Medieval Hall, carefully restored approximately 20 years ago and still used by the community for a multiple of functions. It has a wonderful atmosphere and is a very special place. We are all very lucky to have it. If you would like to find out more about Church House, or even consider helping out occasionally, why not come to our Annual General Meeting in the building on Monday 25th April at 7.30pm. You would be very welcome. Nature walk We are at the end of Winter; Spring is just around the corner but the sea is boiling and booming under a grey sky. The tide is supposed to be on the ebb but the stiff Northwest wind is keeping the breakers running up the beach blowing white feathery spray from their crests. Herring Gulls hang in the wind above me; their clarion calls carry out over the rooftops of the town. Not one of these Gulls beats a wing. They are poised, holding position with a slight wing or tail movement. Perfectly balanced on the elements. Walking back along the Promenade towards those Amusement Arcades that, a short time ago, were buzzing with half term activity I look down onto the rocks. There are more Herring Gulls out there. Most are resting facing into the wind but there is one brown speckled youngster from last years nest still begging one of its parents for food. It will take another three years for this young bird to become an adult. In the meantime it will gradually moult out those brown feathers swopping them for the grey and white plumage of its parent. Where the rocks meet the sandy beach the water is calmer and a flock of Black-headed Gulls are feeding there. The white leading edges of their wings flicker against the water as it churns up the golden sand. Some of these Gulls have now got their black heads, a sure sign that, despite the cold wind, the seasons are changing. A Common Gull flies in to join this feeding flock. It is slightly larger than the Black-headed Gulls and has darker grey wings with black tips. At the very end of the wing there is a white spot. I watch as this Common Gull beats along the edge of the rocks and then battles its way out to sea. 18
There are Oystercatcher looking for mussel shells down there amongst the low tide pools. They hammer them open to get at the sweet meat inside and then have to guard against their feast being stolen by the ever watchful Herring Gulls. There is not much else in the rock pools now. The recent storms have cleaned them out. Out of the corner of my eye I catch a movement. A small bird has just flitted along beside the sea wall. It flies over the wall and lands on a patch of decorative gravel in front of a waterside apartment. Here it carefully tucks itself down behind some stones. Cautiously I walk towards where this bird has gone. It’s a Rock Pipit. Closely related to the Meadow Pipit of the Moor the Rock Pipit is the Meadow Pipits coastal cousin. This particular Rock Pipit has a feast! It has caught a Sea Slater. The Sea Slater is closely related to the Woodlouse but can grow up to three centimetres long. My Rock Pipit has caught a big one and is devouring it in sheltered safety. Out on the beach I follow the tide line and realise that I am not the only one doing so. A dozen little grey and white waders are chasing in and out of the waves following the water to and fro. They look like children’s wind up toys. With their black legs moving incredibly fast these are Sanderling. Like the Purple Sandpiper I wrote about in my last article these Sanderling breed high up inside the Arctic Circle and will soon be heading away from here to make that incredible journey. In the meantime they are stocking up their reserves of food preparing for the migration. As the Sanderling leave I know that in a very short time the spaces will be filled by migrating birds heading back here from their wintering grounds far to the south. Soon there will be Wheatear on the Burrows while overhead there will be the chittering of Swallow. Reynard 19
Tinners and Cogs and Wheels on Track We've organised an outing on the train to Exeter on Sunday 3rd April. All are welcome to join with us to explore the delights of Exeter. We're dancing in the Cathedral Square and we're booked at the Quay. We've always had an audience in Exeter, but we understand that there is a 5km run on the other side the river - we think we'll provide an extra attraction for the crowds, and will use up the same amount of energy. For more detail: bagman@tinnersmorris.co.uk - or our respective Facebook pages. South Zeal Open Gardens: Sunday 19th June 10am - 4pm Hello everyone. Well the warm winds are headed our way and June will be upon us before we know it! Preparations are already underway for this much missed event and we are really looking forward to showing off our wonderful villages and gardens again. We would like to invite participants from South Tawton and South Zeal, up to and including the gardens just beyond Drybridge. We already have some gardens offering to be open but we need MORE! We are so lucky to have such a variety of gardens to display and we are ALWAYS keen to see new gardens that we don't know about! We are not looking for perfection - in fact a garden in the making is interesting to come back to the following year. Please contact me for further information if you think you would like to take part and/or to find out more. It's a really lovely thing to be involved in AND you get a complimentary lunch n pudding to boot! The funds raised go towards the Victory Hall which will be celebrating its centenary this year! One of our key fundraisers is the plant sale. We would be hugely grateful if gardeners could bear us in mind whilst sowing those seeds and donate any spare plants, cuttings and seedlings for the sale. If anybody is available to help out either on the day or in the run up then please get in touch. Many thanks Georgie. 07816588571 georgie.defay@gmail.com. 20
Belstone Celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Belstone Parish Council called a Parish Meeting in February, so that all interested parties could come along and discuss what the village would like to do to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee which will be from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. The Thursday and Friday will be bank holidays. From that meeting a committee was formed, and they are now meeting to arrange interesting activities to involve everybody. The Belstone Commoners’ Association will be arranging the lighting of a Beacon on Thursday evening, and the committee are hoping that villagers will meet on the village green to unveil the memorial stone which is being engraved by the Parish Council. Villagers can then walk together up to the beacon on Watchet Hill, and unveil a plaque for a tree which is being planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy. More events are being planned on Friday and Saturday, to culminate in children’s activities and a tea party in the village hall on the Sunday. We hope that there will be something for everybody to get involved in, so save the dates. If you would like to help with the organisation in advance or on the day, do get in touch. Sally Fullwood 01837 849131. Local News From One Hundred Years Ago – April 1922 Some village news before I digress into a few unusual items mentioned in the press in April 1922. A shed containing hay, straw and petrol (not a good combination) at Lopes House in Belstone burnt down. The owners sustained a £200 loss. The property was not insured. Easter visitors to Belstone included the Mayor of Exeter, Philip Foale Rowsell, CBE, JP, who was staying at the family-built retreat then called Ladybrook (now Bernard’s Acre). Okehampton Girls’ Life Brigade and Boys’ Brigade held a route march to Belstone on Easter Monday. Tea was provided in the Wesleyan Schoolroom and the young people spent a most enjoyable afternoon. The Belstone Wesleyan Sunday School was founded in 1856 and in 1922 was probably still meeting in the old 21
Zion Chapel as the ‘new’ schoolroom behind the current Methodist Chapel (currently serving tea as The Old School Tearoom) wasn’t built until 1926. More on the Belstone Cleave quarry dispute. At the annual meeting of the Dartmoor Preservation Society in Plymouth, the public service performed by the commoners of Belstone in seeking legal protection to save grave injury to the scenery of that neighbourhood was remarked on. The meeting agreed to make a contribution towards the heavy litigation expenses of the Belstone commoners. And at a meeting of the Bridges, Main Roads and County Buildings Committee of Devon County Council; the Clerk presented the bill of costs in connection with the recent County Court action between Commoners of Belstone and the County Council regarding the quarrying of stone at Belstone Cleave. The Press were requested not to publish the figures, but the Chairman remarked that it was an expensive luxury. Already 2000 tons had been taken out, the County Council were in possession of the quarry, and a good many more thousands of tons of stone would be procured. It was decided to pay the bill. South Zeal; this place was all alive for the first church parade and dinner of the Oxenham Arms Slate Club. The progress of this club has been wonderful since its inauguration a few months ago, having now over 130 members. After the service the members marched to Ford Cross, Prospect, Ramsley and back to the Oxenham Arms, where a good old English dinner of roast beef and plum pudding was awaiting them. About 200 sat down. The Committee of the Victory Hall has accepted the tender of a local builder. Unusual story No 1; at an ironmonger’s shop in Okehampton surplus First World War submarine mine cases were being sold as cattle troughs – having been sawn in half to form two separate hemispheres. Excellent recycling – has anyone seen such things still lurking in the corner of a field somewhere? Unusual story No 2; Fortune at Stake; In 1664 Prince Wolfert Webber, a native of Holland, acquired great wealth in the Dutch 22
East Indies and the Fiji Islands, but as his daughter, Princess Anneka, married against his will, he disinherited her, but left his estates to the seventh generation of her descendants. Last spring, the American claimant went to visit the estates, but was warned by Dutch government officials that cannibals lived on the property and that two of their agents who had gone to inspect the estate had never returned. About eight years ago an advertisement appeared seeking information concerning Samuel Webber, who was born in Okehampton in 1783. Mr Ralph Webber, of Plymouth, established the fact that according to the testimony of the family Bible this Samuel Webber was the grandson of the disinherited Princess Anneka. The claim by Mrs Webber to a fortune in the Fiji Islands has resulted in numerous enquiries being made at Okehampton Workhouse concerning Samuel Webber. It has been asserted, however, that the only inmate of the local institution bearing the family name was Henry Webber, of Sourton, who died some years ago. As far as I can see from further research, much of this story is bunkum and the claim came to nothing. Unusual story No 3, from the Daily Mirror; A friend who has been ‘Eastering’ on Dartmoor tells me that, true to custom, the women of Widecombe placed flowers on Easter Sunday on Little Dolly’s tomb. The tomb is little more than a tradition itself now, but the flowers keep a pretty memory green. Little Dolly was a child killed in the local tin mines, somewhere in the seventeenth century, and her funeral, they say, was attended solely by about 500 women, dressed all in the purest white. There is not much truth in this story either. The author Sabine Baring Gould (1834-1924) spun a tale of handsome Dartmoor girl Dolly who attracted the attentions of Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt (1762-1833) and the Prince Regent George IV before marrying Tom Trebble, who took her away to live in a remote cottage on the Dart. After Tom died Dolly worked at Hexworthy tin mine. The real Dolly Trebble (née Mosey) was born in 1793, married William Trebble at Lydford in 1819 and died in 1879, two years after her husband. Any relationships between Dolly, Tyrwhitt and the Prince Regent are undocumented and 23
unlikely, given that she was over 30 years younger than both, and it’s also nonsense to suppose that she started work in a tin mine aged 84!
