The American Coordinating Council of Norway (ACCN) started the planning of this event in February of this year. Many committees were formed, and many volunteers have been working hard, for many months. Hundreds of hours of organization have been in vain. The many elements required for an event of this size have been cancelled: bands, stage & sound, tents, tables, electricity, etc., etc. We are so sorry for this, but we are optimistic and hope to see you in 2022! I would like to thank the ACCN Board for all the hard work: ACCN Event Chair Chrys Hellem, Secretary Elaine Christiansen, Treasurer Karin Mandeville, Raffle Chair Jeanette Førland, Advisors Jan Søderstrøm, Ole Hillestad, & Web Designer Alexander Douglas. In addition, a well-deserved thanks to all our Committee Chair (men/women). Later the same day, the Norwegian government shut down the country for the same reason. The Interim Pastor and key volunteers did a fantastic job in transitioning the worship service from in-person in the Sanctuary to a remote service online only three days later. That weekend we saw that most of the transatlantic flights, to and from Norway, were being shut down and national borders were in the process of clos- ing. On Saturday, at 1:00am, during the night, we decided that we needed to get our Interim Pastor and his wife back to the States before it was too late. At 3:00am Monday morning, they left the Parsonage and headed home to Minnesota. With no pastor in place, and no ability for the Council to meet in person, the church leadership had to scramble to put in place a new way to run and govern the church during these unusual times. The same day that the Interim Pastor left Norway, the ALC conducted our first ALC Council meeting remotely. Here we put in place the procedures that would serve us well for the following year of the pandemic. …. And all of this happened in a period of five days! Our Interim Pastor kept the remote worship services going, even though he was back in the States. We also transitioned to having our previous pastors pitch in and give the sermons. In mid-May one of our parishioners stepped in and helped us keep the worship services going until our newly called pastor was allowed to travel to Norway in late November. In the late Fall, the Norwegian authorities permitted Pastor Sherri Frederikson (see the interview with her on page 30) to travel to Oslo and she arrived November 23. After 10 days in quarantine she was able to start her ministry and her first Sunday in the pulpit was the first Sunday of December. Throughout the pandemic the ALC has tried to support the community in a period of fear and uncertainty. We believe that we will come out of the pandemic strengthened. The Church has acquired technical and procedural skills that we can take advantage of moving forward in a post-pandemic season. This will enable us to reach out and serve the American and English-speaking communities across Norway in a better way in the years to come. Fullbright , continued from page 27 egg powder, indeed, whatever American businessmen have been able to dump on the Marshall-countries” (indeed that part is not so far from the truth, as Sam Lebovic demonstrated in his 2013 article “From War Junk to Educational Exchange”). In retrospect, the article makes for interesting reading because it is at once so understandable and plausible in the context of its time, yet also so dead wrong; perhaps the Fulbright program’s proudest achievement during these 75 years is that it has not succumbed to being an instrument of propaganda, or a deliberate foreign policy tool, of either the United States or any of the partner countries. Fulbright’s mission, which distinguishes the Fulbright program from other public diplomacy programs, of the United States or any other country, is that it is equally concerned with “seeing the world as others see it” as with “getting others to see things our way.” The scientific and educational collaboration promoted by the Fulbright program can and should be a powerful antidote to mistrust between nations. A few years ago, when tensions between Norway and Russia dominated the front pages, as they still do today, the Director of the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research celebrated in Aftenposten 60 years of fruitful collaboration between Norwegian and Russian ocean scientists, extending through the iciest depths of the Cold War; a collaboration, she wrote, that in its disregard for political animosities reflected in both countries a “conviction that research is more lasting than politics.” It is these days encouraging to be reminded of that other realm, of letters and science, in which the Fulbright pro- gram operates, and which transcends political differences and boundaries. It is a resilient realm, and one which has endured since Tom Paine wrote these eloquent words about letters and science in 1791, 230 years ago. Letters, the tongue of the world, have in some measure brought all mankind acquainted, and, by an extension of their uses, are every day promoting some new friendship. Through them distant nations became capable of conversation, and losing by degrees the awkwardness of strangers, and the moroseness of suspicion, they learn to know and understand each other. Science, the partisan of no country, but the beneficent patroness of all, has liberally opened a temple where all may meet. Her influence on the mind, like the sun on the chilled earth, has long been preparing it for higher cultivation and further improvement. The philosopher of one country sees not an enemy in the philosopher of another: he takes his seat in the temple of science, and asks not who sits beside him.
