Presidents Report President’s Report November 2019 Well how fast the last month has gone. We have had some challengers and a lot of successes. First, we endeavored to change the venue of the General Meeting, alas the weather was against us, fortunately we had our regular venue as back up. Secondly, Wombat (our Association Delegate) and myself attended the Quarterly meeting of the NSW & ACT 4WD Association. A precis of the meeting is in the magazine. The full minutes of the meeting will be available in the near future on the Association website (4wdnow.com.au) Thirdly, the annual Xmas Party went off without a hitch, and what a great time it was. We were aware that numbers were down on previous years but those that were there had a marvelous time. I personally think that little Flynn (the grandson of Keith and Gerry Donaldson) was the star of the day. On behalf of the committee and myself I would like to thank Jo and Spotto for all their efforts to make the day an outstanding success. I would also like to acknowledge all the helpers; without them the day would not have run smoothly. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our next General Meeting (remember to bring a plate of Christmas fare) Hopefully the next year will bring some rain and make those tracks a little more challenging. Until then keep the shiny side up. Neale 4

Correspondence from the Hunter Region Change the Wilderness Act At yesterday’s 4WD NSW and ACT quarterly meeting, I called for the association to immediately organise itself, clubs and members. To seize the opportunity and capitalise on the ground swell of public support resulting from the current fire situation, in order to change the Wilderness Act 1987 and National Parks Plans of Management. This is an opportunity that we have never had before and are not likely to see again. This is the on- ly chance will have to get MP’s to listen. This is our only chance to gain access for firefighting, proper land management and the public. For us to be successful it will take coordinated effort from the association to down each individual member. If you want to see access to the Hunter Main Trail, Carter’s Brush Trail, Wirraba Ridge, Mountaineer Trail, Mt Nelson trail, track in the Oxley Wild River area, tracks in the Werrikimbe area and many, many more. Let’s not waste an opportunity like this. This needs much more than a bit of Clicktivism. We need act quickly but a coordinated way Since posting this on the Port Hunter Members only page this afternoon, I have had members concur and ask how can they act on this? I think at the moment we need to prepare, 3P's Look at maps, read at the plan of management a park, look at the wilderness boundaries, the sections on access and fire management. Egg. Wollemi, Barrington try to understand the Wilderness ACT 1987 Find out about the history – E.g. Wirraba Ridge track and the Gospers Mountain (yes the same one as the fire is named!) air strip -{Exercise Big Sky prep before 1RAR went to Vietnam should be a memori- al IMO} Carter Brush used by locals for 100yrs before closure. So we have the info prepared to argue with, to use in letters, to put before MP's. Talk to longer term members about the tracks and areas closed. many newer members won't have the knowledge of the tracks and things like the access for all campaign. I may have info in the HRFWDC council archives too. We have some people with experience who can hopefully offer some further insight to the correct ap- proach. Port Hunter members a considering getting together to coordinate ourselves, if members of your club are interest in attending to coordinate efforts between club to eliminate gaps and double ups, please let us know. Thank you to Jo & Spotto for all your hard work especially behind the scenes. Also thank you to everyone else that chopped, sliced, cooked, picked up goods & everything else that made it another successful Christmas party! Yes we are lucky to be part of such a great club A very big thank you to everyone who was involved in organizing and running the Christmas party over the weekend. This includes but is by no means limited to Jo and those who managed the copious amount of food, the management of the enter- tainment, the visit from Santa (a BIG highlight with the kids) and generally to every- one for helping as needed. I have said it before so forgive the repetition, but we are extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful facility for the enjoyment of everyone at the club. The whole weekend was fantastic, relaxing and most pleasurable. Thanks from our little family Sean Detoit What a fun filled amazing weekend at our CC4WD club Christmas party we had it all great company water slide flying fox craft and great Tucker 26

An Interesting read from Wombat its good to see what other clubs are doing. ‘They came, they saw, they cleared.’ Fifteen years of 4WD club track clearing in Far East Gippsland, Victoria By James Lawson - Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria. One of the most significant ways that members of four wheel drive clubs can ‘give back’ to the Parks Victoria (PV) Rangers who maintain our parks for us to enjoy, is to participate in annual track clearances and gate open- ings prior to the Melbourne Cup long weekend, the main date for seasonally closed tracks to be reopened. Driving commonly used tracks and clearing them of fallen trees or assessing them for other damage is an enormous task which places a huge burden on the limited time and resources of PV Rangers. It also takes them away from their other valuable work and yet it is critical to the safety of the four-wheel driving public. It was in this context that fifteen years ago, in 2004, the local ranger in the Deddick/Tubbut area, Wing Hagger, contacted John and Prue Hasler through the Four-Wheel Drive Victoria Re- gional Representatives Program to organise some track clearers at short notice for the Deddick Trail. 28
John and Prue were a good choice to ask as they are experienced four-wheel drivers as well as members of three different large 4WD clubs (Land Rover Club of Victoria, The Pa- jero 4WD Club, and the Range Rover Club of Victoria). They were also, and still remain, the FWDV Regional Representatives for Far East Gippsland. That first year, John and Prue organised a small group of willing volunteers who camped on Wing’s property near Bonang. In contrast, from that small start fifteen years ago, this year’s track clearing event in the same area attracted some 48 participants, 37 vehicles and 5 Park Rangers! Track Clearing has now become the 3rd longest running event in the history of the LROCV (after the 4WD Show and the now completed involvement with the Murray River Marathon). Playing a significant role for many years in the organisation of the weekend is Tony Jam- bu, club member of the Pajero 4WD Club. So important has this activity become that some years three generation from one family have participated and some club members The number of National Parks where track clearing occurs has grown from just the Snowy River National Park to now include the Alpine National Park, the Errinundra National Park and this year the Croajingalong National Park. Now most people camp at MacKillops Bridge campsite on the Saturday night as Wing’s property is no longer available. Otherwise, the job itself has essentially remained the same. And, despite a few wet years where track clearing was slower than normal, it has only been postponed once when sleet and snow forced all volunteers out of the mountains. That weekend was rescheduled a month later and the club volunteers returned, willingly making the 1,000km round trip to Melbourne. When asked about the future of track clearing , John and Prue said that despite their active involvement in leading club trips, sharing the bush with club members and their involvement in FWDV Regional Representatives, they are committed to arranging the annual track clearing in Far East Gippsland with Tony Jambu for as long as PV require assistance. With that in mind, we can look forward to many more years of a well-organised partnership among PV, FWDV, club volunteers and the local community in the annual track clearing that is so beneficial for the entire 4WD community. 29

RILEY’S RIDE Each year prior to the Festival, horse riders set out on a four-day trail ride through breathtaking scenery which lent poetic inspiration to Banjo Paterson’s Man from Snowy River poem. Known as ‘Riley’s Ride’ the event is an essential element of the Bush Festival. It traces the last journey of legendary Upper Murray Stockman, Jack Riley who met Banjo Paterson in 1890 and is locally regarded as the inspiration for Paterson ‘s fa- mous ballad. RE-ENACTMENT “There was movement at the Station for the word had passed around that the colt from old Regret had got away, and had joined the wild bush horses – he was worth a thousand pounds, so all the cracks had gathered to the fray…” A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson 38

IMPORTANT NOTICES The lease manager would like to remind everyone not to feed the horses at the lease as they become too familiar and can cause damage to cars, vans and tents. Also, just a reminder, that NO PETS are allowed at the We-Leaser under any circumstances, unless they are a registered assistance animal, and have been approved by the Committee. One more thing…… When visiting the lease please remember to sign in to the visitor book, as this is an official club site and we are required to take attendance, just like we do at club meetings and trips. 44
A REQUEST FOR HELP As has been mentioned before, we are trying to attract some more families into our club to keep it balanced and fun for ALL age groups. We are looking for ideas that will assist us to attract more families with kids to the club and also to get more of the members with kids to participate in more activities. Please put your thinking caps on and let us know via email or Face- book if you have any ideas, or if you are a family with kids, what sort of events would you like to see. It doesn’t have to be four wheel driv- ing, any event that gets us together and having some fun is all we are looking for. So please, give it some thought and let us know. The committee’s email addresses are all on the second page of this magazine 45

Morning Tea break allows the trainers to work with each participant and their vehicle, locating and identifying the necessary safety equipment in their truck. The next session outlines driving techniques over various terrains and an introduction to club protocols. After lunch we move into a practical training session allowing you to practice your skills in a safe, supervised area. MEMBER PROFILE Bruce Close AKA “Wombat” I joined the Central Coast Four Drive Club on the 29th July, 1996. I had just purchased my first four wheel drive. It was a Toyota FJ40. It was a two door, soft top and I can’t remember it’s age. Not many comforts but it served me well. My four wheel driving experience started when I was in the Army Reserve in the late sixties. I joined a RAEME unit at Willoughby NSW and spent five years as part of a recovery unit. As a side note all my early experience and knowledge about four wheel driving was gained from Ken Mac- donald who is also a member of the Club. After leaving the Army Reserve I did not have a 4WD. Then in 1995 I was working at the time for Energy Australia and was chosen to work around Bro- ken Hill at what was called the Broken Hill Electrification Project which essentially meant I was one of a team overseeing the construction of a powerline from Broken Hill to Tibooburra and spur lines to all the properties in between. I was out there four nine months and drove a Toyota HiLux and clocked up many thousands of kilometres traversing all kinds of terrain and in all kinds of weather. When I returned home when the project was completed I decided to buy a four wheel drive because of the pleasure I got from driving a four wheel drive and the opportunities to see this vast country Australia. Upon joining the Club and doing a few short trips I realised that if I was going to do some outback trips that the old FJ would not cut it as keeping the dust out was near impossible so I bought a Nissan GQ Patrol station wagon in 2000. I then went on many trips. These included some six trips to the Victorian High Country which I found to be some of the best trips due to the magnificent scenery and the so many varied track conditions which really tested both vehicle and driving abil- ity. Other trips included the NSW High Country, Bendethera area down south and many other parts of New South Wales. I organised a trip across the Simpson Desert in the late 1990’s and went from west to east and it was a great adventure for my first trip as leader. Many good moments which include Xmas in July in the middle of the Simpson. My next trip I was part of an adventure led by Wayne Prendergast to Broome in July 2005. We left the Central Coast on 6th July and travelled out through Cobar, White Cliffs and onto In- namincka. Just before we got to Innamincka I broke the suspension on my camper trailer. After repairs we pushed on to Birdsville. When we got to Birdsville Wayne had to leave the trip with a hand problem and ended up in Mt Isa hospital. I took over the trip and some of the group decid- ed to go across the Simpson but the rest pushed on north to Timber Creek then onto Kununurra. From there we went to Wyndham. Heard from Wayne who was going to meet up with us in Broome. From Wyndham we went to Drysdale Station and Mitchell Falls which was very spectac- ular including the helicopter ride. Then onto Broome across the Gibb River road which was very corrugated. Spent a few days in Broome before heading to Tunnel Creek via Windjana Gorge. We then went to Bungle Bungles and onto Kununurra. Then travelled through Katherine, Daley Wa- 61
ters to Barkly Homestead before turning south to Camooweal. Then onto Adels Grove, Lawn Hill, Kyuna, Wynton and then Longreach. After Longreach headed south to arrive back on the Coast in August. Great trip was had by all. Since my Nissan Patrol I have owned two Nissan Navara, one a four door ute and the other a four door trayback. My current vehicle is a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser and yes I’ve come full circle from my first 4WD. The FJ is by far the best 4WD I have owned. It has been fitted with a GVM upgrade and an IDrive, but other than that it is stock standard but it performs well both on and off road. Over the years I have attended ten Four Wheel Drive Gatherings which have been run every two years in various locations including Broken Hill, Mitta Mitta, Hobart, Mt. Ive, Pomona and others. Over the past 23 years in the Club I have met a lot of great people and made a lot of friends, who I would like to thank for all their help and support. During my time in the Club I have served as President of the Club as well as Secretary and a short stint as Treasurer. I have been the Club del- egate for the Four Wheel Drive NSW and ACT Association for many years and was Secretary of the Association for two years and I am currently the Chairperson of the Hunter Region of the As- sociation. 62
