ON THE CLOCK Sat 22 & Sun 23, Feb A high-class meeting at Badbury Rings was the highlight of last weekend’s action. Fastest performance on the card came from Champagne Lily (120) in the Men’s Open. She had fallen three from home when travelling strongly at Cottenham on her re-appearance but made amends here, running on strongly from two out. Once again her jumping was not the best, however, which tempers enthusiasm somewhat for her chances in hunter chases. The majority of other events on the card were truly run, with Master Dancer (114) and Master Baker (118) recording figures close to their form ratings. Both have prospects of hunter chase success later this season. One performance that may have gone under the general radar was that of No Limitations (100) in the second division of the Restricted. Far from straightforward in the past, he nevertheless can show a fair bit of toe when on song. The third home – Brass in Pocket (96) – was set a fair bit to do and appeared to be caught out by the substantially quicker second part of the contest. He should be able to land a similar event run at a more uniform pace. Snow Castle (114) got the better of a good tussle with Greensalt at the rearranged Sinnington meeting. This was his fourth win from just nine outings, and whilst his consistency should hold him in good stead in similar No Limitations (Bradley Gibbs) contests, he is still only eight and might Photo: Tim Holt timholt@talktalk.net have further improvement in him. The South East Area got underway at Charing where the opening event saw a good contest between two promising types. Victory went the way of the Francesca Nimmo-trained Kenyan Cowboy (114), a neat type who will probably now head for the sales. Runner-up Howitsdone (108) is a different stamp of individual altogether, with a strong pointing pedigree, and looks to have a bright future on the East Anglian circuit. There were no outstanding performances at Higham, but down in Cornwall at the rearranged Wadebridge fixture, Nickelonthedime (102) impressed again in the Restricted and remains one to follow. In the following Intermediate, Bridge of Spies (104) recorded a figure some 9lb above his form rating. Both he and runner-up Dragon de la Tour (98) should find further success, the latter better suited to a right-hand track.
