DHU 2020 training event DHU 2020 Autumn school “From systems biology to new targets and therapeutics” 1. Introduction The DHU 2020 "Personalized medicine for chronic diseases", provider of the organization of 2015 Autumn school, brings together the strengths of healthcare, teaching and biomedical research from 2 Nantes institutes: l’institut du thorax and l’institut des maladies de l’appareil digestif (IMAD), along with the humanities and social sciences (HSS) strengths of the "Standards, Diseases and Societies" topic, CNRS team UMR 6297 "Law and Social Change". These structures are built around a translational project ranging from premature to elderly subjects and aimed at promoting the development of personalized medicine for chronic diseases. The present report on the second training event “From systems biology to new targets and therapeutics” is part of the training initiatives of DHU 2020 to its graduate and post-graduate students (Science, Medicine and HSS) and staff, focusing on personalized medicine for chronic diseases and on the transformations induced by this concept. According to the participants’ opinions, the meeting was an exciting Systems Medicine symposium, which presented the highlights of interdisciplinary research, bridging biology, medicine and human and social sciences with bioinformatics and modeling sciences and putting Nantes as an expert center position in Systems Medicine. During this 2 days’ workshop, the invited lectures, oral and poster presentation sessions and workshop sessions provided state of the art information from the above fields and more particularly on their integration. In addition to the training event of DHU 2020, the meeting also represented an excellent opportunity for social networking of young future scientists and doctors with senior colleagues and to share knowledge and experience. Importantly, the meeting was supported by the CaSyM initiative (Coordinating Systems Medicine across Europe) whose program was presented during a session. The European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) also accredited the event with 11 European CME credits (ECMEC). 108 participants from 5 countries attended the meeting. 21 of them were researchers, 12 were medical doctors and 6 Technicians or engineers. 38 of them were Master 2 Degree students (medical and scientists), 8 were PhD students (science and HSS) and 4 post-doctoral researchers. Thus, the objective to attract graduate and post-graduate students was reached with 46 % of participants. It is to note that all participants received a certificate of attendance. The certificate helps students (Master degree and PhD students) to get their training approved by our local University. No participant asked for CME credits. 2

General information Analyses of gender balance showed that women were more represented during the meeting with 68 females and 40 males among the 108 participants (Figure 1). 10 invited speakers and 4 tutors from all over Europe and United States presented highlights of interdisciplinary research, bridging biology, medicine and human and social sciences with bioinformatics and modeling sciences in the workshop. Among the participants were researchers, MDs, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and master degree students. The majority of participants were from France. Workshops During the meeting, two series of 4 workshops have been organized successively, to allow participants to attend at least 2 workshops. A total of 68 Participants attended the workshops, where 4 tutors were at the student’s disposal. The tutors were professors from local institutions who were responsible for the preparation of the course materials for students. Participants in WS 4 were requested to bring their own laptop computers. WS 01 WS 02 WS 03 WS 04 Tutors Dr. G. Meurette Dr. C. Dina Prof. P-A. Gourraud Dr. X. The workshop of G. Meurette was about the use of pig model as a preclinical platform to develop neuro-intervention in dysfunctions of the enteric nervous system. Despite the interest of the topic, only a few students participated to this tutorial, as it was a very targeted and specific course. C. Dina presented Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and discuss how it can help unravel the molecular mechanisms through which genetic variation causes disease. Participants could follow step by step a GWAs analysis, evaluate the results and review various tools (bibliography, public databases) to identify pathways involved in human diseases. It was a good hands-on tutorial. 10
DHU 2020 training event DHU 2020 Autumn school “From systems biology to new targets and therapeutics” The general opinion of participants was that P-A Gourraud presented a very stimulating and interactive workshop session, as evidenced by the number of participants. He dealt with the personalized medicine tools alike the Multiple Sclerosis Bioscreen developed by UCSF-Neurology and proposed to advance the assessment of data (existing datasets), Information technology (data processing, storage and access) and analytics needs (descriptive, comparative and predictive models). The last workshop was presented by X. Prieur around metabolic diseases. He also had a great success. Participants could interactively use omics data from different adipose tissue cell type and practice to understand how to modelise this pathological state, under tutor supervision. Overall, the workshop participation was a success (63% of meeting participants) and participants were very enthusiastic about the topics and how the workshops were conducted. 3.4. Oral presentations and poster session A part of the interactivity of the event was Oral presentations and poster sessions. Concerning oral presentations, the selected speakers had 15 minutes for their presentation and questions. Chairmen were asked to run an active discussion among students and participants. Dealing with poster session, 8 abstracts were received and reviewed by the local scientific committee. Among them, 7 abstracts were selected to be presented as poster. 1 abstract was refused because it was off topic. Students selected had 5 minutes to present their work and 4 tutors chosen among the local scientific committee were asked to challenge students with questions. The common opinion was that presentations selected were on a high scientific level and well- presented and students participated successfully to the discussion. One negative point may however be stressed: the low number of abstracts submitted, perhaps due to the short time between the request mailing and the event. 11

DHU 2020 training event DHU 2020 Autumn school “From systems biology to new targets and therapeutics” 5. Conclusion To conclude, we can say that the 2nd DHU 2020 Autumn school “from systems biology to new targets and therapeutics” was a very exciting meeting, with high-level speakers and focus on successful examples of research and practice of systems medicine. According to the survey and questionnaire, the attempts were very successful and useful for all participants and trainees. Concerning the participation, there were fewer participants than for the first edition (108 vs 120 participants in 2014), but with more graduate and post-graduate students, thus reaching the teaching objectives of this DHU2020 Autumn school. Although very fruitful in terms of local and national networking, we can point out that there have been little foreign participants except invited speakers. Finally, given the success of this edition and that of the previous year, this event will be renewed under the same format in autumn 2016, probably by coupling the meeting with European networks sessions, in order to attract foreign participants. 18
