ABOUT THE SA SHEEP EXPO The SA Sheep Expo is working towards planning an exciting program for its fifth Expo, with participant numbers growing from 40 in the first year to over 100 in 2019, we are expecting growing participant numbers as excitement builds again for another year. The 2022 SA Sheep Expo is again seeking to provide a platform to develop an improved understanding of the sheep industry, the opportunities it offers and to encourage the next generation to engage at a grassroots level within the industry. Inspired by the highly successful SA Junior Heifer Expo, the SA Sheep Expo seeks to provide an education forum for young sheep enthusiasts aged 12 to 23 years and enables them to build their knowledge and identify pathways to further careers in areas of the sheep industry. The SA Sheep Expo is being coordinated by an enthusiastic and passionate organising Committee comprising of stud and commercial sheep producers and industry persons who are volunteering their time to make this event possible. The Committee has an in‐depth knowledge of the sheep industry as well as livestock industry event coordination and delivery. THE PROGRAM The SA Sheep Expo will be held over three days during the first week of the April school holidays, 14 – 16 April 2022 and is designed for high school age participants, tertiary students and young agricultural professionals. All participants will stay on‐site for the three days and participate in a program specifically designed to suit each age group category – 12 to 14 years (Juniors); 15 to 17 years (Intermediates); and 18 to 23 years (Seniors). Both the wool and meat facets of the sheep industry will be represented within the program, with a range of sessions to be delivered by reputable industry specialists. The education program aims to cover both skills and technologies now available to run successful and sustainable stud and commercial enterprises, with the potential to integrate into some recognised tertiary training institution units such as TAFE. An example of topics to be covered include breeding, nutrition, marketing, animal health, objective measurement, genetic evaluation, judging and handling. Students will also be introduced to the governance of our industry where they will gain an understanding about the roles of Meat & Livestock Australia, Sheep Producers Australia, Australian Wool Innovation and Livestock SA. The program will include hands‐on sessions, presentations and tutorials from leading industry experts. Participants will also be able to compete in age groups to maximise learning outcomes with the major incentives being a study tour for the winner of the 18 ‐ 23‐year age bracket, generous education bursaries, and sponsored learning experiences. During the Expo students will be exposed to numerous career pathways and employment opportunities that are currently available in the industry. THE LOCATION / VENUE Adelaide Showground, Wayville, South Australia The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society (RA&HS) are especially supportive of the SA Sheep Expo and are again hosting the 2022 event at the Adelaide Showgrounds.
