The oils of the Catechumens and of the sick, and the Sacred Chrism are blessed by the bishop in a solemn ceremony on or near Holy Thursday, but they are still just oil. The hands laid on the deacon, priest, or bishop at ordi- nation are themselves anointed with Chrism, but they are still the hands of a human being. At last Sunday’s Pumpkin Carving Party At last Sunday’s Pumpkin Carving Party, kids, parents, and catechists took some fun time to carve jack-o-lanterns to get into the Halloween spirit. Halloween actually has a Christian and liturgical origin, you know! The word is a contraction for “All Hallows’ Eve.” “Hallowed” is an old way of saying “holy,” so “hallows” are the “holy ones.” Thus “All Hallows’ Eve” is the eve of All Saints’ Day!
