The Baptism of the Lord January 9, 2022 Dear Parish Family, A most Blessed Baptism of the Lord to you! The Baptism of Jesus Christ reminds us of our Baptism; of how we are continuously invited to live our baptismal call as his followers, in faith, hope and love or charity. We strive to live as disciples of our Savior this new year 2022, every year, all the days of our lives. Just wanted to give you a recap of other parish Advent and pre-Christmas celebrations last year, last month of December 2021. December 12th, Third Sunday of Advent and Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was a busy day, starting with Las Mananitas at 6 in the morning inside the church – rosary in different languages, songs, intercessions and prayers, blessings. The small congregation gathered for a breakfast of Mexican sweet bread, pan dulce and conchas, as well as hot chocolate in the school lunch area after the service. Then we continued to celebrate with a noontime Marian procession of the image of the Blessed Mother on Ambrose Avenue, through Dracena Drive, into the school basketball courts and church parking lot, then entering the main church doors on North Vermont Avenue. A number of our boys were dressed as St. Juan Diego and the faithful were accompanied by a mariachi band along the procession route. The beautiful bilingual Spanish and English Mass then started in the church. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed Guatemalan tamales, courtesy of Guatemalteca Bakery and Restaurant (Santa Monica Blvd., near Immaculate Heart of Mary Church) in an outdoor, take-out reception in our school lunch area. The following weekend on December 18th, Saturday (Vigil of the Fourth Sunday of Advent) was the parish Simbang Gabi Filipino Evening Mass at 5:30 PM. Our community celebrated the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines (1521-2021), from the time of the early evangelization of the country via Spanish missionaries from Mexico until today. After the wonderful Eucharistic celebration, parishioners were treated to a take-out reception with food containers filled with bao, Chinese barbecue pork buns (from Family Pastry, Chinatown), banana rolls from United Bakery on Sunset, fruit cups and bottled water distributed by members of the Filipino-American community in the Augustinian Saints’ Plaza Courtyard area. Then on December 19th, Fourth Sunday of Advent, the community celebrated the Posadas, a story retelling the Holy Family’s search for an inn in Bethlehem. Some of our children from our 12 PM Spanish Mass community were all dressed up as Joseph, Mary, innkeepers, shepherds, etc. The costumes were courtesy of Our Mother of Good Counsel School. The route started from the school lunch area to the Plaza Courtyard and into the church. Songs, a reading of Luke’s Gospel of this story, and blessings were part of the service. Afterwards, the community enjoyed a take-out reception of pupusas, Salvadoran stuffed tortillas from Guatemalteca Bakery, as well as pre-packaged Ziploc bags of assorted holiday candies and chocolates for the children (rather than the pre-pandemic pinatas). After almost a two-year hiatus, it was so good to celebrate these annual, Advent and pre- Christmas multicultural celebrations once again. It was great to gather with our fellow parishioners again, form community and celebrate the coming of the Messiah. December 2019 was the last time our parish held these festivities. Much thanks to our Hispanic and Filipino communities for making these celebrations possible. All these celebrations point us to Jesus Christ, Light of the World and Emmanuel, which means ‘God is always with us.’ Yours in Christ & Mary, OMGC, Fr. Alvin Paligutan, OSA
Our Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Community January 9, 2022 Querida Familia Parroquial, ¡Un Bendito Bautismo del Senor para ti! Los disfraces fueron cortesía de Our Mother of Good Counsel School.
