202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 2018 – 2019 CLUB VISITATION PROGRAMME As is our policy the DG will cover 50% of the club visitation programme with the remaining 50% shared between the First Vice District Governor and the Second Vice District Governor. This is a very intense programme and we aim to have different personnel than in previous years visit. Because of the logistics of our large geographical area this is not always possible. Likewise we try to get consecutive meetings when larger travel distances are involved. The visiting member will be in contact with the clubs as soon as possible. However if the date allocated to you does not suit please contact them as soon as possible. As the address will only be 20 minutes in length we are comfortable for the meeting date to be a tea or business meeting where most members are present. Preferably, there will be no other guest speaker that same evening. The Club is expected to pay the cost of the meal for the DG/FVDG/SVDG and their partner or driver. 202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 District Governor Helen Welcome to this the 102nd year of Lions. It is indeed a privilege for me to be serving our District 202 E in the position of District Governor for the 2018 – 2019 year. I look forward to working alongside you for the next 12 months. There is much to do to keep our District working effectively and growing in strength as we strive to meet the increasing needs within our communities. Malcolm and I enjoyed our time away at DGE School and the World Convention in Las Vegas. It was full on with 3 days at school – listening, learning and working with 30 of my fellow DGE’s from Constitutional Area 7. This was followed by 3½ days of Convention along with 15,000 Lions. Hearing about the service activities of other Lions in different countries was very motivating but we did not enjoy so much the 40+ degree temperatures, smokey casino walk throughs and the waiting queues. We have been challenged to move our organization forward “BEYOND THE HORIZON” using creativity and innovation to change obstacles into opportunities and developing new projects so that we work towards our global goal of: ‘Serving 200 million people each year by 2021’. In order to achieve this goal it is obvious that we will need more volunteers to help us, forming partnerships with other groups within our communities, and increasing our own membership numbers. We are urged to continue to meet the needs of our own unique communities ensuring our projects are still relevant. Around the world we are united by our global causes: vision, hunger, the environment, childhood cancer and diabetes. The statistics for these causes are sobering reading. This should be balanced with fun and fellowship and looking after each other. MAKE FELLOWSHIP SHINE WITHIN YOUR CLUB. Lions Clubs International Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary and is using this milestone to launch Campaign 100. The aim is to raise a capital fund of US$300 million over a 3 year period. These funds will generate sources of income which will be available to us all, in the form of various grants, to help us achieve our service projects as well as responding to natural disasters. The Global Action Team structure (from club level right up through to the International Board level) has been designed to strengthen and provide support for us to set our goals and to convert our action plans into successful service. At the club level the combined efforts of your Global Action Team Leader, Global Leadership Team chairman, Global Membership Team chairman and Global Service Team chairman, supported by all club members should generate a greater outcome than the sum of the individual parts. Fellow Lions - You are encouraged to attend the upcoming Club Development and Orientation days to learn and network. The more informed and upskilled we are the more effective we can be, the more impact we can make in our communities. Helen 5 "Serve locally, give globally"

202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 HEALTH TIP As we age we can develop problems without feet due to wear and tear of joints and skin becoming thin and less elastic, dry and more fragile. As we only have one pair of feet, good foot care is important to maintain our mobility, sporting and social activities that are important for health and well- being. exercise tones up muscles, helps to strengthen arches and stimulates blood circulation keeping toenails cut prevents soreness, infection and ulceration daily checking and moisturizing (not between toes) keep skin supple as we age we lose the fatty pads that cushion bottom of the foot so a supportive shock absorbing shoe is best a pair of running shoes provides a good amount of shock absorption and stability and supports the arch. keep feet warm with good quality socks (do not warm them too close to the fire) and bed socks at night shoes should be roomy enough to wear all day and if you have feet that swell over the day put your shoes on when you first get up in the morning. have an annual foot check with a podiatrist, problems such as diabetes and circulatory problems can be picked up by looking at the feet. if you cannot reach your feet to cut your toenails a podiatrist can do it for you to prevent problems RANGIORA LIONS Groups or individuals we have supported this month Who: Olivia Hurley from Purpose Projects What they do: She was looking for money for travel and to contribute to a school building program in Uganda. The second is a tour of our venue, the Art Deco Regent Theatre. And the third is a tour of the Westland Industrial Heritage Park concentrating on the joint Lions/Heritage Park/RSA restoration of a World War One ambulance. 202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 SPEECHMAKER CONTESTS To All Presidents, Secretaries and Lions Members 202E DISTRICT We have now completed both District finals for Emerging and Young Speechmaker which were held in Christchurch in May and June. As we are all aware we are competing for students’ time versus their time doing exams they have to do and also other things they opt to do. However, I have to make comment that entries came in relatively early and all looked good and straightforward until there was a sudden change of thinking or panic and with that came some withdrawals. 202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 Lions Club of Amberley District. Another busy month for our Lions club with our Changeover night being the high light. After months of planning we held a most enjoyable evening combined with the 40 th anniversary of our club. Ex members came from far and wide. Peter Gamble our present District Governor attended and inducted our new board. 1st VG Elect John Whyte and Zone Chairman Geoff and Sandra were also in attendance plus many Lions from surrounding areas. We were served with a delicious 3 course meal. Our main entertainment for the evening was Peter Rowley, who a lot of you will remember from Billie T and McPhail and Gadsby days. Peter is an ex Amberley person so he also enjoyed returning to the area of his child hood. He was ably backed up by Terry Kearns, who was a band member with Mark Anthony many years ago. Members of Amberley Lions club held a ‘club meeting’ with a difference which was well received also. A great night all round to mark this special occasion. Wood chops have been our main stay lately. The club has continued to hold them throughout the winter as we have been donated 3 different lots of trees lately and we have no trouble selling this. Luckily our wood chop working bees are very well attended thanks to a small band of dedicated members. Last Sunday Countdown held a market day where they held a Sausage Sizzle where they supplied everything. All we had to do was turn up and cook the sausages and sell them and keep the profits. Many thanks to our local Countdown for this. It worked two fold as we were able to sell our Lions/Plunket raffle at the same time. Projects we are working on at the moment are Rock n Wheels, where we have a gathering of classic cars and a Fashion parade where 13 fashion shops will show their wares. These will both be held in September. We have had 10 new members throughout the year but we are always looking for more to join us and carry on our great work. 13 "Serve locally, give globally"
202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 Senior’s Version of FACEBOOK For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principals. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them “thumbs up” and tell them I “like” them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have 4 people following me: 2 police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist. Proper etiquette states the name tag should be worn above the pocket on the right side of your shirt, blouse, or blazer. The key thing to remember, as mentioned above, is that you want the people you are meeting to be able to make direct eye contact with you and closely see your name as you shake hands. Akaroa and Bays Senior Citizens luncheon Once again our Club hosted Akaroa and Bays Senior Citizens for our annual mid-year luncheon at the Grand Hotel. The luncheon is by invitation and 99 seniors accepted. One lady attending was 99 years old and is planning to attend next year’s function. We fed and watered the senior citizens to an appetizing sit down meal with entertainment throughout the afternoon. In addition, we handed out 10 prizes in the free raffle. The prizes were kindly donated by our local Four Square Store About 18 Lions and partners helped out with bar and waiter duties, serving the 2 course meal, and washing the dishes. Big thanks to all who helped. 14 "Serve locally, give globally"

More details later on tickets, but I suggest that you could look up the Festival website. PDG Marion McWha – Music Festival Lion Liaison YOUR FOUNDATION Share Your Passion for LCIF There is an exciting new way for you to be involved with LCIF at the local level. Exciting New Grant Projects Approved in May More than 50 new grant projects were approved at the May Board of Trustees meeting, including projects in every constitutional area. Diabetes, Lions’ new signature cause, was the focus of several grants, including one to establish camps and support groups for adolescents in Romania. In Wisconsin, USA, a grant was approved to purchase equipment for a cancer unit at a children’s hospital. A grant awarded to Lions in Japan will help expand a school in Bangladesh. In addition, LCIF and Special Olympics International agreed to renew their partnership until 2023, which means expanding upon the global activities that serve Special Olympics athletes and promote inclusion. These are just a few examples of the life-changing projects Lions are organizing around the world with support from LCIF. John Benefield 202E LCIF Coordinator 16 "Serve locally, give globally"

Zone 8 Chairman and Project manager, Bill Pickering said he was very proud of the effort everyone had made. The journey started in Sept 2016, when St Johns new Headquarters building at Rolleston was well under way, it then appeared they might also need, additional equipment. When the Ch-Ch Chinese Lions Club of 23 members donated $13800.00 towards a New Ambulance at that time, it was realised that if all Zone Clubs donated at that level, then presenting St John with an additional ambulance, debt free was a possibility. Dialogue with Chairman John Sunckell at St John, quickly established there was a growing need for improved emergency response, centred around Rolleston and he welcomed LIONS proposal to help. 17 "Serve locally, give globally"
202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 John spoke to a meeting of Zone Clubs on St John aspirations and needs, explained how their Ambulance service operated, the cost of a new Ambulance and when it could be delivered. He also detailed the signage that could be offered to acknowledge the LIONS generosity. John Benefield our 202-E, Lions Clubs International Foundation representative, assured the Zone Clubs that an application for funding would qualify under L C I F Standard Grant Criteria. The Trustee for Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust also felt the Project would qualify, with our NZ Trust. Six clubs Ch-Ch- Chinese, Ellesmere, Malvern, Rolleston, Selwyn and Halswell, with a membership of over 300 Lions worked hard over the period on a variety of Fundraisers, cooking take-a-ways, catering, parking cars, doing traffic control, running Bridge and Bowling tournaments, selling pea straw, Christmas trees, firewood etc. to raise $71300.00 An appeal to large employers in and around Rolleston, resulted in local dairy farmer and Chairman of Directors at Westland Dairy Company, Peter Morrison, donating $4000.00. Demonstrating their commitment to Health and Safety and to Community needs. By this time the Rolleston Club Treasurer had established a Trust account for funds on behalf of the Zone and the Zone Chairman, had applied to both trusts for grants. Lions Clubs International Foundation approved a Grant of $90 000.00 on June 8th, ensuring the success of the project, towards the total cost of $180 000.00, needed to put a fully equipped Ambulance, “ On the Road “ at Rolleston complete with a Lions Emblem and acknowledging Donor Trusts and Clubs. Since then, the L M L C C Trust, has also approved a grant which will cover the balance needed. The presentation Ceremony at Rolleston on June 28th, attended by 30 Lions from the Clubs involved enables all those clubs to register their effort as a Centenary Legacy Project Level Two, “Donating a Vehicle to a Community Organisation” and qualifying for recognition by Lions International. Responding, John Sunckell Chairman of the Selwyn Central St John Hub at Rolleston, said they were absolutely delighted with the LIONS effort, which would be a big help to St John’s ability to provide good service. He thought St John would have a New Ambulance ready to be consecrated in September at a special service in Christchurch, with Lions fully involved. Yours in Lionism, Bill Pickering. HAVELOCK LIONS BROWN GOLD Treasurer Brian report that over the last 12 months we have made over $750 from bagged sheep poo that represents a large number of bags! 202E July 2018 Bulletin Edition #1 PEDIATRIC CANCER OVERVIEW Children are a gift to the world, yet every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer and less than half of the world’s children have access to effective care. Children who survive cancer are often left with debilitating effects that can impact their physical development and ability to learn. That’s why Lions and Leos are answering the call to expand access to life-saving treatment and support the children and families who need us most. Lions Clubs International are working to give children with cancer a second chance at life.
