CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS SSIA’S 2017 CONVENTION DRAWS A CROWD The shoe repair industry converged aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA in July for an interesting and informative meet- ing. The 113th Annual SSIA Convention attracted more than 400 people from 171 shoe repair shops, 16 wholesaler companies and 34 exhibiting companies. The convention attracted retailers from 24 states and four countries outside of the United States. The show floor was crowded with people looking for ways to enhance their businesses. Expo Draws a Global Crowd Exhibitors came from the United States, Canada, France, Ger- many, Spain and Italy to display their wares. Products on display ranged from machinery, to back room supplies, to retail prod- ucts designed to add value for customers and profits for shoe repair shops. Seminars Address Repair and Marketing Techniques When the expo was closed, SSIA’s seminars were open. Mem- bers shared their knowledge on topics ranging from expanding profits, to repair techniques, to customer service. Highlights from the seminars are featured in this issue of the newsletter. New Directors Elected During Saturday’s annual business meeting, SSIA President San- dra Verbruggen recognized outgoing board member and past president Paul Angelos for his service to the association. She also recognized former directors Steve Doudaklian and Bill Ko- nomos whose terms ended since the last annual meeting. Elec- tions were then held for new supplier, wholesaler and repairer board members. Supplier members elected Jesse Pasternak of Goodyear Shoe Products. Wholesaler members elected Ed Gitlin of H.L. Zitrin Corp and repairer members elected Sandra Ver- bruggen of Fast Feet. Pasternak and Gitlin will serve three-year terms on the board. Verbruggen was re-elected for one year. 2 Shoe Service - Fall 2017 Shoe Service Institute of America

Rachel Drumheller What goes into competition shoes? Passion. Effort. Time. Passion, because you have to love what you do. Its not just a job, it’s an art. Effort, because you have to strive to put your absolute best into it. And time, because you don’t want to rush. You need to pay attention to details, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. You want your shoes to be as good, or if not better than when they were fresh from the box. I recommend that everyone enter these competitions. They push you to do your best. They tell you where you need improvement. There is no better learning experience. Competitions help us grow as craftsmen. Every job, repair or contest can be a learning experi- ence if you are open to it. A good friend and teacher, Glenn Dimauro (may he rest in peace), once said, “How will you know what you are capable of, if you don’t try?” So, every day I try, and I hope everyone else will too.
