2023 Native Tree and Shrub Sale Vernon Hills residents are invited to participate in the Village sponsored Native Tree and Shrub Sale as part of our annual Arbor Day celebration. The goal of this program is to foster a healthy urban forest in our community. Take this great opportunity to enhance (or start) landscaping around your home! Pre-Orders Only All trees and shrubs must be pre-ordered and pre-paid prior to Monday April 24, 2023. No orders will be accepted after this date. Orders for trees and shrubs will be accepted as long as quantities last. If an item is no longer available at the time the order form is received, you will be contacted to either make another selection from remaining trees, or given the option to cancel your order and have your check returned. Open to Vernon Hills residents only. Limit 3 per address. How to Pre-Order To reserve your trees or shrubs please print the order form and mail it, or bring it in with a check payable to the Village of Vernon Hills to the Vernon Hills Public Works Department. Cost Trees will cost $25.00 each and shrubs will cost $22.00 each. All trees and shrubs will come in a 5 gallon container and the size will vary with the species. Generally, the trees will be approximately 2-5 feet tall. Tree Pick-Up Date Residents will pick up pre-ordered trees and shrubs at the Vernon Hills Public Works Department located at 490 Greenleaf Drive. Residents must have means to transport. No deliveries will be made to resident’s homes. Proof of residency will be required when you pick up your trees or shrubs. Pick-up Date: Saturday, May 13, 2023 Hours: 8 a.m. – 12 noon (rain or shine) Planting and Care Planting instructions and care guidelines are available at: http://www.arborday.org/trees/NineNum7.cfm In addition, Village Arborists will be available to answer questions and help you select the best tree(s) for your location. Homeowners are responsible for planting, and caring for your new trees. No warranty on trees and shrubs. Utility locates are required before planting, contact J.U.L.I.E. at 1-800-892-0123. Wood Chips Free wood chip mulch is always available and accessible at the Public Works facility, 490 Greenleaf Drive. Bring your own shovel and containers! Village Native Tree and Shrub Sale ALL TREES AND SHRUBS COME IN A 5 GALLON CONTAINER The height of the trees will be approximately 2-5 feet tall and will vary with the species. River Birch ’Betula nigra’ Grows 30’ to 40’ in 20 years and may reach 70’. A beautiful tree with dark green leaves in the summer changing to yellow in the fall and exfoliating bark on larger limbs exposing the inner bark. Does best in moist, acidic soils and full sun. Bald Cypress ‘Taxodium distichum’ A slender pyramidal deciduous conifer that will grow to 50’ or more. Will grow well on almost any site but prefers deep loamy soil and full sun. Fall color ranges from orangish brown to russet.
Pagoda Dogwood 'Cornus alternifolia’ Grows 15-20’ tall. The branches spread horizontally and form tiers. The leaves are medium green and can turn reddish purple in fall, although it may not develop outstanding fall color. Yellow-white fragrant flowers in late May and early June. Does best in moist, well- drained, acidic soil and partial shade. Tulip Tree ‘Liriodendron tulipifera’ A fast growing tree with pyramidal to oval-rounded crown grows to over 50’ at maturity. Unique yellow- orangish flowers that resemble a tulip flower in May to early June. Fall color is golden yellow. Prefers well- drained, moist soil and full sun.
White Oak ‘Quercus alba’ The Illinois State Tree. A slow to medium growing tree with deeply lobed leaves that are dark green to blue-green in the summer turning to brown with hints of red color in fall. Plant in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Swamp White Oak ‘Quercus bicolor’ Grows well in wet locations and has scaly bark and a broad crown. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and a pale green to grey-white on the lower surface. Will grow to over 50 feet at maturity. Plant in full sun.
Red Oak ‘Quercus rubra’ A fast growing oak with up to 2’ of growth per year possible when young, reaching to 60’ at maturity. Pointed leaves that are dark green in the summer turning to russet red and sometimes bright red in fall. Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Bur Oak ‘Quercus macrocarpa’ A slow to medium growth rate tree with deeply furrowed stems at a young age. Dark green leaves in summer change to dull yellow to brown in fall. A very majestic tree with age. Plant in full sun where there is plenty of room for it to grow.
Chinquapin Oak ‘Quercus muehlenbergii’ A handsome medium fast growing tree with a mature size of up to 50’. Leaves are dark yellowish green in summer changing to yellow to orangish brown in fall. Plant in full sun and average soil. Oakleaf Hydrangea 'Hydrangea quercifolia’ Will grow to 4-6 feet tall. The creamy white fragrant flowers appear late June through July. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun. Plant in a sheltered location as temperatures below -10 can cause injury Fragrant Sumac ‘Rhus aromatica’ A medium shrub which will grow 2-6’ tall with fragrant leaves/stems when bruised. Leaves turn orange to red to reddish purple in the fall. Can withstand part shade and does best in well-drained soil.
Buttonbush 'Cephalanthus occidentalis’ Will grow to 3-6’ tall with glossy green foliage and creamy white flowers June through August. Best suited for moist to wet soils, will not tolerate drought or dry locations. Plant in full sun for best bloom.
