Folens School At Home: Infants Weekly Plan: Week 6 Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home. Shortly after schools closed, we at Folens made all of our resources available for parents to use on FolensOnline. However, we understand that parents may not feel they have the time or expertise to pick and choose the most suitable activities for their child across multiple subjects. So, we turned to some experienced primary school teachers and asked them to put together a weekly plan for parents to use at home with their child. The purpose of the plan is to identify age-appropriate resources that can be used to help children learn and to provide some guidance to parents when using them. Each week, we will publish a new plan and accompanying digital resources for each of the three core subjects, English, Irish and Maths, as well SESE (History, Geography and Science). *We at Folens appreciate that these are challenging times for everyone and that many parents will have a limited amount of time to support their child’s learning. There is no pressure to complete every activity in the weekly plan – it can simply be used as a menu from which parents can pick and choose. Accessing the digital resources The digital resources can all be accessed from FolensOnline. For ease of use, we have included a link to each resource in the plan just below the thumbnail image of the resource. NB: In order to launch each resource, you will need to a) be logged into FolensOnline and b) copy and paste the link from the plan into your browser. Here we will revise the number 9. Begin the lesson by watching the number 9 video. Next, practice making sets of 9 using concrete materials (cubes, counters, pieces of lego) at home. Look for the number 9 at home and when out and about (house numbers, car registrations etc). Here is a helpful video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h- 7L6OHTOiE https://content.folensonline Ask your child, how many ways can you make the story of 9? .ie/programmes/PlanetMath Eg. 3+6=9, 9+0=9, 8+1=9 s/PMSI/resources/video/pm Can you use counters to show the number 9 on a ten frame? _si_v079.mp4 See below. Practice the number formation of 9. Next, do the Number 9 activity to identify sums that add to 9. https://content.folensonline Finally, print out and have your child complete the number 9 worksheet .ie/programmes/PlanetMath below (Maths Activity 1: Number 9). s/PMSI/resources/activities /pm_si_083/index.html Activity 2: Data To introduce data, begin by playing the ‘How Many’ activity.
At school, we encourage children to interpret data (information) in rows using real objects, models and pictures. To practice this at home, gather a random selection of cubes/lego pieces. Ask your child to sort them by colour. Count the number in each set. Ask your child questions like: • Which colour has the most? • Which colour has the least? • How many more reds are there than green? • How many blues and yellows altogether? https://content.folensonline Help your child to draw a block graph to represent this data .ie/programmes/PlanetMath (information). s/PMSI/resources/activities /pm_si_014/index.html Then, play the ‘What can you see?’ activity to help your child to create a block graph. Finally, print and have your child complete the worksheet included at the end of this document (Maths: Activity 2: Data). https://content.folensonline .ie/programmes/PlanetMath s/PMSI/resources/activities /pm_si_047/index.html
