2023 CAMP SCHEDULE & INFO COURAGEOUS 2022-11-17 Camp Courageous offers a variety of services including week-long camp sessions, respite care weekends, camper trips, family camp sessions, and experiential education sessions for individuals with disabilities. The camp operates primarily on donations without government assistance, formal sponsorship, or paid fundraisers. Camp Courageous annually serves thousands of campers with disabilities ranging in age from 1 Scan to visit: to 105. campcourageous.org Where is Camp Courageous? Camp Courageous is located five miles southeast of Monticello, IA in the beautiful Pictured Rocks area of Jones County off Highway 38 or 151. The Camp lies on nearly 400 acres of land surrounded by thousands of acres of state primitive land and the Maquoketa River. Camp Courageous is located 40 miles from Cedar Rapids or Dubuque. Camp’s Mission: Provide exceptional year-round recreational and respite care opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families. The camp is run primarily on donations, giving all individuals the opportunity to give through gifts of time, materials, money, and other means. Partnering Opportunities at Camp Courageous: Camp Courageous was founded in 1972 and has evolved into the philosophy that, “…we’re more alike than we are different.” By offering partnerships to organizations, Camp can provide personalized experiences for individuals with similar disabilities. Examples would be the Muscular Dystrophy Association, IESBVI, and the Spina Bifida Association. Campers will be able to bond with their peers that have similar life experiences and make memories that will last a lifetime. Partnering with Camp Courageous can help individuals push themselves beyond the limits of their disability. Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and are involved in camp year round. They assist with campers during week-long overnights, day-long camps, respite weekends, special events, and the Travel Program. They will also be seen supporting volunteer Scan to visit page dietary, housekeeping and maintenance. Volunteers range from business professionals, teachers, high school students, college nursing students, to local community members. Family Preview Day 2023 - April 8 Family Day Camp is an opportunity for campers and their family to get a first-hand introduction to what Camp Courageous is about. Enjoy a fun-filled day of activities that could include a zipline ride, paddle boats, climbing, fishing, bowling, and more. Cost is $10 per person, campers are free. Contact familycamp@campcourageous.org for more information about Family Day Camp. Best of the Best Camp Courageous is fortunate to have the most creative, dedicated, compassionate, and well-trained staff. Most of the Counselors and Activity Specialists are college-age students. Some of them have graduated from college and are seeking hands-on experience working with individuals of varying abilities, ages, and backgrounds. Many are majoring in Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, or Physical Therapy. Camp Courageous offers a Junior Counselor Program. This program is available to high school students ages 16-18 years old who have an interest in working with individuals with disabilities. A great opportunity to gain experience to become a future Counselor or Activity Specialist or for job experience. The highly trained nursing staff live on site and are available 24 hours a day to help with any needs or concerns. Camp’s nursing department also train staff in CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens. All staff interacting with campers are Mandatory Reporters. Note: Prepackaged Medications are required to be sent two weeks in advance for week-long and travel camp sessions. Individuals who do not send their medications prior to arriving at check-in for week-long camp can expect to spend an additional two to four hours at check-in or may be removed from a travel trip. The Dietary staff will meet individual dietary needs based on each medical need. Meals are served at 8:30 AM, Noon, and 5:30 PM. The majority of special diet requirements can be met on-site. Respite Care Programs The Respite Care program at Camp Courageous is 24 themed weekends allowing campers a wide variety of camp activities. Campers of all ages that live at home with a parent/guardian are eligible for respite care weekends. Respite allows families and their caregivers to have time to re-energize knowing their loved one has proper care. Camp Courageous Travel Program The Camp Courageous Travel Program provides individuals with disabilities, ages 18 and older, that are very independent that are able to publicly socialize the opportunity to experience the thrill of traveling to destinations both domestic and abroad. A variety of both day trips and multi-day trips are offered. Camp’s knowledgeable and caring staff plan and oversee all aspects of each trip keeping in mind the camper’s needs to create a memorable experience! Individuals that may need additional assistance when traveling may attend with their own staff or volunteer. Visit the Travel web page for more information or email travel@campcourageous.org. Travel Preview Day 2023 - August 20 Travel Preview Day is an opportunity for campers and their guardian/staff to learn more about traveling with Camp Courageous. Learn about what is required for travel campers, see the camp’s bus, meet staff, and more. August 20th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Email travel@campcourageous.org for more info. An Activity for Everyone Camp Courageous offers a wide variety of activities, some very unique from other camps. One of the more popular camp activities is swimming. Camp has an indoor therapy pool as well as an indoor lap pool. Campers can relax in warm water with the whirlpool jets or choose to try out the wall climb and dive into the deep end of the lap pool. There are many adventure elements at camp, one of which is a 700 ft long zipline that reaches 100ft into the air. Camp’s Durgin Pavilion has a two-lane bowling alley along with a variety of arcade games. Outside the main lodge is a music park with eleven different instruments that all play harmoniously together no matter which instrument is played. Camp Courageous has its own Lake Todd where campers can canoe, paddle boat, or go fishing. A Music Park, Multipurpose Field, an interactive pedestrian tunnel, and other areas make for unique experiences at Camp.
