Welcome to your 2022 WaterAid Glastonbury volunteer guide! Welcome to your 2022 WaterAid Glastonbury volunteer guide! You are part of our biggest ever Glastonbury volunteer team, helping deliver vital festival services and inspiring others to support our mission – to reach everyone, everywhere with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. This guide will give you all the information you’ll need to know relating to WaterAid and Glastonbury this year, so please read it carefully before coming onsite. This guide should be read in conjunction with the WaterAid festival volunteer guide and your role-specific training guide, both found on the Festival Volunteer Hub. Thank you so much for your support, we can’t wait to see you at Worthy Farm soon! Contacting the team: Up until Monday 20 June, you can contact us by emailing festivals@wateraid.org or calling 0207 793 4523. From Monday 20 June, we will not be monitoring this inbox or phone line, so any Glastonbury related correspondence must go via the WaterAid HQ onsite mobile numbers: 07795 306 694 07733 947 516 Any non-urgent enquiries can still go via the festivals@wateraid.org email address and we will pick these emails up after the festival. And finally you can see a recording of our 2022 Glastonbury Q&A webinar here Registered charity numbers 288701 (England & Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland)
Arriving onsite Travel You will need to organise your own travel to the festival: Public transport We always recommend using public transport as the quicker, cheaper and more environmentally friendly option. • There will be regular crew shuttles from Castle Cary train station (timings TBC) • National Express runs coaches from across the UK (NB: only a limited service runs on Tuesday) By car Make sure you join our 2022 Glastonbury volunteer Facebook group to organise car sharing with volunteers from your area. If you’re driving, please offer lifts to your fellow volunteers if you can – thank you! If you requested a parking pass in your acceptance form, you will receive this via post in the coming weeks. Arriving onsite Please arrive at WaterAid HQ between midday and 5pm, ready for your onsite briefing. It can take a long time to get onsite and to the WaterAid campsite, so please leave plenty of time. You need to arrive at either Pedestrian Gate A (PGA) or Pedestrian Gate B (PGB): PGA (via Red Gate) - for public transport/ drop-off - postcode BA4 4EE PGB (via Blue Gate) – via the Purple car parks – for those coming by car - postcode BA4 6TA As you near the site ignore your SatNav and follow the festivals signage. Please see the map at the back of this pack to see where these gates are. Registered charity numbers 288701 (England & Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland)
Arriving onsite Collecting your wristband You can collect your wristband from the ‘Recycling Crew Ticket Cabin’ close to your arrival gate. There may be queues at this cabin, so please leave plenty of time. It has been arranged with the Cabin that you will be able to collect your wristband between midday and 5pm. If you think you are going to be late then please call us ASAP and we will see what we can do. The cabin will have your name and photo, so to collect your wristband you will need your photo ID (passport or driving license) and your ticket letter (which will be sent to you via email in the coming weeks). You will not be able to get into the festival without both of these items. Getting to the WaterAid campsite Once you have your wristband, you must make your way to the WaterAid campsite to sign in with the WaterAid team. Our campsite is based at Brimley’s Orchard, next to Tom’s Field (the recyclers campsite). There will be big WaterAid flag banners at the gate to our campsite. The walk from the car parks can be around 30 minutes, so we recommend you packing light to make the walk easier. The festival will be running the Crew Mini Bus or “Tractor Train” to help crew get from the car park to Tom’s Field. This pickup will be from the Orange car park (near PGA) and the Purple car park (near PGB). You will need your wristband to get on this mini bus and get into the crew camping. We cannot guarantee that there will be space on the mini bus, so please come prepared to walk! Signing in Before setting up your tent, please sign in with the WaterAid team. When signing in, you will be given: • Your WaterAid ID badge – you will need to wear this whilst on shift • Your food vouchers for the duration of the festival • Your WaterAid t-shirt (and hi-vis where applicable) • Your rota • Timings for your onsite briefing and onsite training (you will need to attend both sessions) If you do not sign in at the WaterAid campsite we will assume you have not arrived and you will not be able to claim your deposit back. Registered charity numbers 288701 (England & Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland)
Leaving site You will need to stay at the festival until the end of your last shift, which could run either: • Until midday on Monday 27 June • Until the early hours of Monday 27 June (just after midnight) • Until 5pm on Thursday 30 July (festival clean up team only) You can find out the latest your shift could run until in your original offer email. You will need to leave site no later than 2pm on Monday 27 June or for the clean-up team by 7pm on Thursday 2 July. The Crew Mini Bus will also be running for the return journey Monday 27 June from 8am. They will leave from Tom’s Field and take you to either the Purple or Orange car parks. The WaterAid campsite and facilities The WaterAid campsite is primarily at Brimley’s orchard, with an extension of the campsite at Brimley’s Two. It’s a brilliant spot on the hill and it takes about 10 minutes to walk to the Pyramid stage from there. You can see where our campsite is in the map at the back of this pack. All WaterAid volunteers must camp in the WaterAid campsite and those who are not WaterAid volunteers are unable to camp here. You will be directed where to set up your tent once you’ve signed in, please follow the WaterAid team’s instructions on where to camp as we will need to make sure everyone is able to fit in. We are unable to allow gazebos and ask you to bring as small a tent as possible. A reminder to please take home with you everything you bring onsite, to follow the festivals ethos of “Love the Farm, Leave no Trace”. Facilities In and around the WaterAid campsite, you will find: • A communal marquee - with hot drink making facilities (please bring your own mug), a few snacks and limited phone charging points • Sign in marquee – where you’ll meet your team leaders/ supervisors and sign in for your shifts • Showers – just a few minutes’ walk from our campsite. There can be queues for these at certain times of day, but these are well worth the wait! • Toilets – cleaned by our very own loo crew! • Crew catering – close to the campsite - where you can exchange your meal vouchers • Glastonbury also provide useful facilities such as: • Medical and first aid services • Welfare tent – Worthy Welfare is a 5 minute walk from the WaterAid campsite • Property lockups Registered charity numbers 288701 (England & Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland)

We have to pay for these vouchers, so if you do not use any of your vouchers please do return them! Meal times and menus will be available when you arrive onsite. All meals are vegetarian with vegan options, and there will be lactose and gluten free meals available. If you didn’t let us know any dietary requirements in your acceptance form, please let us know ASAP on festivals@wateraid.org. WaterAid at Glastonbury in 2022 Our roles onsite this year This year, you’ll be part of our biggest ever Glastonbury volunteer team, providing even more vital water, sanitation and hygiene services. Our 700-strong WaterAid volunteer team this year is comprised of: • The Loo Crew – our biggest team onsite and renowned for its amazing contribution to Glastonbury. Our Loo Crew will clean the long drop, aboveground, composting and disabled toilets across the festival – over 2500! • Water bars and kiosks – our volunteers will provide free water refills as well as selling our sought-after stainless steel water bottles, with all profits going to WaterAid. This year we’ll have four large new bars at the Pyramid Stage, The Other Stage, West Holts and the Park. This team also includes our Big Tap team. • The Stand – our volunteers will engage crowds next to the Pyramid stage with our work, engaging festival-goers with our climate campaign • Water-point roaming team – a new team for 2022, this team will be cleaning all the water points onsite and making festival -goers aware of their nearest water points. • Female urinals – our revolutionary female urinals are always popular with festival- goers and this year we’ll be partnering with Peequal to trial their new squat design urinals • Recycling – this team play a crucial role in keeping Glastonbury clean and tidy, ensuring waste is properly sorted and recycled around the festival’s busy and buzzing bars. • The Meeting Place – run by WaterAid, Greenpeace and Oxfam, this station provides a meeting point for festival goers to find each other and to get involved in our campaigns. This year we’ll be asking festival goers to leave messages on our wishing tree and add ribbons to our joint climate banner being made over the festival (more on this below!). • The Good Loos—we’re excited to be bringing our very own composting toilets to Glastonbury! These toilets will be cleaned more frequently and this are will host our Big Bog (more on this later!) • Festival clean up team – another new team for this year, they’ll be ensuring that any leftover waste after the festival is collected and sorted appropriately. Whatever your role, remember to spread the message about WaterAid's work and our climate campaign. Each team will be supported by team leaders or supervisors and a HQ management team. Our Climate Fight at Glastonbury As you will have seen in your online training (recap in our volunteer guide !) this year we’re bringing Our Climate Fight to festivals to highlight the urgency of providing people with clean water to help them adapt to the effects of climate change. We’ll be campaigning in the following areas at Glastonbury: • The Stand • Our four big water bars • The Big Tap • The Meeting Place • At all of these locations, we’ll have our WaterAid-blue post-boxes, for festival goers to send a postcard to the UK government, asking them to ensure at least one third of their climate budget is invested directly in local projects that bring clean water. With reliable clean water, communities can build resilience and take charge of their lives. Festival-goers will also be able to send postcards to themselves, as a reminder and pledge to continue to take climate action when they get home. We’d love for all of our volunteers to kick start our campaign – so please do head over to one of our campaigning points, and make your pledge! PR and social media With over 700 WaterAid volunteers at Glastonbury this year, we have the opportunity to make a BIG impact in press and social media. We have covered social media and press in your WaterAid volunteer guide , but some reminders specifically for Glastonbury: • Please do get photos of you in action volunteering and tag WaterAid on social media • If you get asked to speak to the media, please call one of the onsite phone numbers and we will send one of our press team to assist you. • Please checkout the Glastonbury press releases on the Volunteer Hub, and send them out if you can! Registered charity numbers 288701 (England & Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland)
Our Climate Fight at Glastonbury Climate crisis act now banner drop Along with our friends at Oxfam and Greenpeace, we’re asking festival-goers to contribute to our CLIMATE CRISIS ACT NOW banner, that will be dropped from the Park stage on Sunday afternoon. You can get involved by adding your climate pledges and wishes at our station near the Pyramid Stage or at the Meeting Place. We will all be joining together for a procession on Sunday to see the banner be dropped too. Please keep an eye on social media for how you can get involved and do join the banner drop if you can! The Big Bog To further highlight the impact of a changing climate on access to water and sanitation, we are building our very own Big Bog - a toilet sculpture made from sand and Glastonbury loo compost! The Bog will be out in the elements and will highlight the effects of too much sun, or too much rain on sanitation structures - as well as being a huge talking point both inside and outside the festival. It will highlight how climate change threatens people’s access to clean water and toilets, and how 1 in 5 people still don’t have a decent toilet at home. You can check our Big Bog at our Good Loos, located at the back of the Pyramid stage field, by the cider bus. Registered charity numbers 288701 (England & Wales) and SC039479 (Scotland)
