2021 Special-edition stamp programme
BIG THEMES IN A TINY FORMAT Stamps are far more than just a means of paying for postage. They reflect their times and represent Germany abroad. They are also miniature works of art. Stamps bear- ing the inscription “Deutschland” are issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance. Every year, the Finance Ministry issues around 50 special-edition stamps depicting themes that reflect German history and culture. It takes special talent to depict important themes within a minimum of space. Many graphic designers submit designs for each new stamp – but in the end, only one of them makes it on to your envelope. Giving to good causes Some stamps are real philanthropists, too. Since 1949, Germany issues a number of special “plus stamps” every year. These stamps cost a little extra, with the additional proceeds going to charitable projects. About €10 million is raised in this way every year. This money is used to support environmental protection, youth and sports, social welfare projects, and the Foundation for Philately and Postal History.
