Studies and plans from the 1980’s until the 2000’s The plan of commuter train network The plan of street based tramway system between Tampere and neighbouring towns. from western parts of city to the city centre and onwards to Hervanta in the south.

Main safety features • Passenger safety: • safety edges in doors • CCTV and emergency phones at exits • positioning of handles and stanchions (podesters) • emergency exits and extinguishers • no steps in the passenger area • smooth surfaces • non-slippery materials and heated floors • automatic light control • Driver’s safety: • cabin divided from the passenger area by a glass wall • safety push button and emergency phone • cabin according to DIN 5566, ergonomics defined in mock-up • crashworthiness according to EN 15227
Main safety features • Pedestrian safety: • smooth shape in the front part • covered windshield vipers • minimal gap between the rail and end buffer • bogie covers • emergency lifting considered in various areas of the network • Special user groups: • contrast colors on doors, floor, stanchions and seats • several places for wheel chairs, prams, bikes, etc. with fixing points • dedicated places for the visually impaired and guide dogs • minimal gap between the platform and car at stops, stepless access • delay function in doors for disabled and prams
Next steps in design • Interior design • Positioning and types of handles and stanchions (podesters) • Ergonomics of the driver’s cabin and the passenger area • A wooden mock-up tram in Oulu • Tested by different user groups • The mock-up brought to Tampere in 2019 • Open for public viewing • Possible uses in training the drivers
