Everyone specializes in throwing, strength, etc. 1. What’s the end goal? Lead them to that. B. Excel in what you can. I wanted to do everything possible. Currently don’t have the tech or facility; that’s fine 1. Develop in all aspects but focus on what you’re good at and what you can control in the present. One Size Does Not Fit All – Culture to Baseball A. Let them be themselves 1. We cannot box a 5’8” 170 lb pitcher into the same movement as our 6’7” 250 lb guy B. If they come in with a different method, trust them until you can evaluate the process B. Trust their fake belief sometimes. If it “feels good,” leave them alone for a day and come back to it. 1. Let them learn on their own because you will not be on the mound C. If it fails, give it another try 1. Learn from your first time, and then fix it. The team will see the effort or lack thereof Conclusion A. Don’t have 5-star recruits or 5-star facilities, but we need to create 5-star relationships B. Keith Boeck San Diego Padres Bridging the Gap Between the Newer Perceived MLB Metrics/Principles and what is Important for the High School Player 1. Realistic metrics/stats that should be measure and valued at the high school level and ways to improve - Sprint Speed - Arm strength - Catcher pop times - Swings/takes (plate discipline and chase rates) - Barrels 2. What offensive principles should be emphasized that translate to the development of quality high school players. - Plate discipline - 2 strike approach - Situational (what does the situation call for?) Team vs individual ABs - Right way to take BP (ie not HR derby to pull side) - Ability to use the whole field - Playing the “old school” game of pepper (hand/eye) 3. What pitching principles should be emphasized that translate to the development of quality high school players. - Ability to throw strikes/work ahead - Fast ball command - Finding the right slot (HTQ, TQ, LTQ) - Fielding/PFPs - Situational (what does the situation call for?) - Side of the rubber - Optimizing use of the lower half/being athletic on mound 4. Other topics - Practicing at or near game speed - Getting the most out of players (expectations vs consequences) - Improving a player’s baseball IQ - Different ways players learn (visual, audial etc) - “25th” man concept - Coaching 21st century players that need things now! - Combat vs accept all the info players have access to on-line and self-described pitching/hitting gurus … launch angles and spin rates www.azbca.org azbca@gmail.com @AZBCA2020
Dan Padilla – daniel.padilla@southmountaincc.edu South Mountain Community College Developing Hitters – Blending Individual & Team Priorities WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO US & WHY? - TEAM: Problem-Solve – Compete – Win - INDIVIDUAL: Vision – Balance – Adjustability Swinging vs Hitting – Symbiotic relationship Individual - Movement Prep & Activation GOALS NEEDS - Warm up movements to hit - Get it going - Create more durable patterns - Feel under control - Eliminate bad reps - Highlight feel - Repattern FEELS & IMPLEMENTS - PVC (Path & Direction) DEMO - Pull up assistance bands (Posterior Chain Activation) - Exercise balls (Posterior Activation & Controlling Forward Move) - Stability discs (Anchoring & Connection w/ Ground) - Chuck-it (Path & Dynamic movement) TEAM PRIOTITIES – Our Big 3 and Why (Essentially working backwards from Vision – Balance - Adjustability) 1. OPEN 45 DEMO - For us it’s about creating windows. The first window is created via the forward move. Its controlled via the hip hinge and posterior chain, not forward momentum. The second window is bat path. 2. STEPBACK (Arenado) DEMO - Balance is dynamic and individuals have different ways of getting to it. Can be called 50/50, can be rear legged, all that matters is that a player maintains it. 3. EARLY GO - On time, slower & sooner. Depending hitters’ style, we want to be at the top of our move or close to it waiting on release. QUESTIONS www.azbca.org azbca@gmail.com @AZBCA2020
