Juniors or seniors who will have earned more than the required 22 or 26 credits (depending on grad plan). ● Next opportunity is for Spring 2022 semester ● Restrictions? ○ Students may Pass/Fail up to 2.0 credits – 1.0 junior year and 1.0 senior year ● Numerical grade on report card, P/F on transcript ● Is not utilized in GPA calculation ● The actual Pass/Fail forms must be completed and turned in by the deadline given by the teacher each semester ● Only district approved courses can be pass/fail. Credit at a community college transfers to University determines whether test score is the majority of Universities in the US acceptable and type/amount of credit. College Readiness TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE – requires students planning to attend a Texas public college/university meet college entrance exam standards in READING, MATH, and WRITING to enter into college level coursework. Students failing to meet minimum passing standards MUST be placed in developmental programs/classes. If I would like to start at Lone Star… ● Care Academy – English IV L and/or Advanced Algebra Rise Up! Take Courage! Do It! ● SAT/ACT may be helpful but not required ● If you want to go to a 4 year university after Lone Star, make sure classes you take at Lone Star are needed for future goals. Covid Update Rise Up! Take Courage! Do It! Many colleges and universities are waiving the SAT and ACT scores (test optional). Students will be reviewed holistically. The college will look at a variety of factors including the student’s grades, rigor of courses, extracurricular activities, community service, work history, leadership, and essays. Some may also require a letter of recommendation, resume, or interview. Check with each institution on their specific policy via the schools website. For some applications, you may have to declare if you want to be considered as test-optional or not. If you have the opportunity to test, it may benefit you for admissions or scholarships.
Overview of College Applications 1. Fill out each application (usually found on one of the following Rise Up! Take Courage! Do It! platforms) carefully and thoroughly, including required essays. Once completed, be sure to pay and submit. Apply Texas – used for all Texas state schools including Lone Star Coalition - used by 150 colleges and universities nationwide Common App - used by 900 colleges and universities throughout US and internationally Send Edu - free, secure electronic document transfer service for counselors, teachers, student references and other officials involved in the application completion process
Overview of College Applications 2. Request an official transcript from the Registrar’s Rise Up! Take Courage! Do It! Office. Note: Some universities are now requiring self-reported academic records. 3. Complete student profile with Counseling Office if using any platform other than Apply Texas. Once the student returns the profile, the counseling office will begin the student college application folder. If needed, depending on specific college admission requirements, the counselor will upload and fill out information based on what is requested.

Apply to all schools by Nov. 1st if possible ◦ Must meet prospective school’s deadline 6. Keep a copy of all information and a record of submissions

Application and supporting materials must be completed and submitted on time ○ Class of 2022, Top 6% for UT-Austin ● The student needs to regularly check email communication from colleges and college portals and communicate with the counselor and college throughout this process until all information is submitted and completed. ● If a student earns credit from Lone Star and a transcript is needed for a college application, the student needs to request a transcript from Lone Star through the student’s myLoneStar account or go online to Lone Star and request one.
College Application Fee Many applications require a fee and will not be processed until they are paid. Some waivers are available if you qualify. Rise Up! Take Courage! Do It! WAYS TO AVOID FEES FEE WAIVERS FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY • College Board (if SAT taken on a fee • Speak with the colleges: waiver) • Applying on special days • NACAC • Applying in person • ACT • Campus visit waiver • Tax or FAFSA information CHECK THE COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS Check with each college to see if they accept waivers and how they accept them. The easiest way is to google Application Fee Waiver + College Name. After that, see Ms. Baron if NACAC waiver is needed.
