WELCOME RUNNERS Dear 2021 Joplin Memorial Run Race Participant: Thank you for choosing to participate in the 2021 Joplin Memorial Run. On behalf of the board of directors of Active Lifestyle Events, Inc., I want to welcome you to Joplin. It is difficult to believe we are ten years removed from that horrific day on May 22nd, 2021 when an EF-5 tornado tore through the heart of our city, leveling 1/3 of the city and taking the lives of 161 of our citizens. But true to our Show-Me state moniker, our community rose to the biggest challenge in our history, demonstrating to the world the miracle of the human spirit. As you race through our city’s streets, you will run through historic districts, by new schools, new neighborhoods, new churches and new businesses that reflect the resolve of our community as we continue to rebuild. And what better place to start the 10th anniversary edition of the Joplin Memorial Run than from Cunningham Park, ground zero of the storm. Be sure to check out the butterfly garden and other memorials throughout the park while you are visiting. The goal of this run continues to be summarized by our tag line: Run, Remember, Rebuild. Each of us run for various reasons. But today, we share a common bond and we run as one. We run to remember the 161 members of our community who cannot be with us, but who we will never forget. We run in remembrance of the many acts of sacrifice and heroism displayed during and after the storm. But we also run to celebrate the rebuilding of our city as well as our city’s spirit and pride. Funds from this year’s race will go to the Joplin Trails Coalition to support trail improvements. Collectively, Active Lifestyle Events has given over $200,000 back to the Joplin community in the ten years since the tornado. These projects were only made possible because of you, the runners. Lastly, I would like to say thank you to the hundreds of volunteers, law enforcement officers, medical personnel and city employees that have given hundreds of hours to make sure you enjoy a smooth, fulfilling race and that you experience the hospitality of our city while you are here. We wish you the best of luck this weekend and look forward to seeing you back in 2022. Sincerely, Audie Dennis President Active Lifestyle Events, Inc. 2
